The Visitors is the eighth studio album by Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released on 30 November 1981. With The Visitors, ABBA took several steps away from the lighter pop music they had recorded previously and the album is often regarded as a more complex and mature effort. The opening track, The Visitors, with its ominous synthesizer sounds and the distinctive lead vocal by Frida, announced a change in musical style. ABBA concluded their album-making career on a high (if bittersweet) note with The Visitors (1981). Marital discord and career pressures sealed the foursome’s fate – but rather than let their legacy peter out, ABBA turned their swansong into a striking final statement. The Visitors bears the influence of New Wave bands like Ultravox and the Buggles; its sleek sound conceals moody asides and quirky left turns. Themes of inner turmoil and disillusionment replace the usually upbeat sentiments the band had been known for – the title track throbs with paranoia, while “Like An Angel Passing Through My Room” stirs the ashes of dying love, and “When All Is Said And Done” and “One Of Us” become vehicles for singers Frida and Agnetha to work out their post-romantic angst. The arrangements are fresh and inventive, mixing tingling mandolins and chiming guitars with surging keyboard lines and hints of reggae. The regrets underlying the songs are clearly evident – yet there’s a vigor to these tracks that mitigates the sorrow. Both a farewell and a culmination, The Visitors is ABBA’s most revealing album and among their very best releases overall.

The first CD to be produced for sale was Chopin*, Claudio Arrau - Waltzes = Walzer = Valses, it was manufactured on 17 August 1982, but not released commercially until 1983. ABBA - The Visitors was manufactured in Germany in 1982 but not released until March 1983. Technically there was no "first" CD to be commercially released as 50 titles were released at the same time in Japan on 1 October 1982. The music industry's first ever album released on compact disc, the group's swan song record with a new wave flavour (traces of Sparks, Gary Numan, Ultravox and Data are particularly daring and clever). Personally, I was never into ABBA, despite respect and admiration for them although respect and admiration was never actually a conscious perception. I guess, thanks are partially due to Erasure - who remain the perfect mirror image of the Swedish hit factory, a shadow of which is very evident in the UK duo's witty electro-pop catalogue.Love ABBA or not, there is no hit of theirs you wouldn't occasionally whistle along - their 70s stuff so pure and honest, carefree and bittersweet, but it is "The Visitors" with an edge they only partially showed in their previous, and much beloved hit records. Here the melancholy cries volumes and while in typical ABBA fashion, the arrangements/lyrics are added a stronger scent of darkness. The cover photo adds to the tone as the music's perfect match. A snapshot of the group absent from each other - a farewell to it all, the success and the heartbreak, a four letter word that now stands for "eternity".

The Australian release is indeed a gatefold. The version listed here is NOT an Au release! It is a NZ release with no gatefold. Much like NZ presses of ARRIVAL that do not have the Au gatefold cover. Which was copied for the 45rpm Abbey Road HSM release.

The Australian version is gatefold, like ARRIVAL. This is NOT a Aus version, going by the label it is a NZ release. Discogs likes to mix and match and put "Aus" for country when the label CLEARLY shows it is an NZ version! Very annoying! Our RCA Victor labels had not had that styles since 1974.

This album is Abba's most sophisticated work. The album feels very musical and grown up (except for "Two For The Price Of One"). The album sounds like it is a mini musical (not suprising that benny and bjorn would create "Chess" with Tim Rice three years later). The album is full of elements ranging from musical theatre, opera, classical music, moods and atmospheres mixed with a pop sensibility. This is the only album I can listen to by Abba and not hear Eurovision cliche's, with the exception of "Two For The Price Of One", the worst part of the album. This is an album that is worth listening to once in your life. An interesting album full of sophistication and well crafted pieces from an established pop act.

This album was relased in Czechoslovakia 3 times. Twice in 1982 (82 1 / 82 2) and as very rare issue in 1983 (83 1) yet. It´s very rare because in was pressed in time of ABBA prohibition. ABBA was officialy forbiden in Czechoslovakia in April 1982 and the prohibition lasted long 7 years - till 1989 here. Petr (Praha)

There's an article that debunks the Billy Joel myth (it was one of 50 CDs released on the same day in Japan, and just happens to have the lowest catalog number, so people incorrectly say it came before the others). Numerous sources including Philips own press materials refer to the ABBA CD as being the first commercial pressing, or first commercial pop music pressing, rolling off the line in August 1982. They had demo CDs of it at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1982 though; this is also documented in a June 19, 1982 Billboard magazine article. What's your source for the Discomate pressing being earlier than all others?

Where did you hear that? There were no CDs released in 1981. The copyright dates say 1981 because the music and artwork did not change from the original 1981 album release.This release was the first commercial pop music CD manufactured, but ended up not being the first one actually released. Japan got to be the first to market with a batch of 50 CDs on October 1, 1982. This ABBA disc didn't hit the street until the following March.

According to the wikipedia on compact disc: "The first commercial compact disc was produced on 17 August 1982. It was a recording from 1979 of Claudio Arrau performing Chopin waltzes (Philips 400 025-2). Arrau was invited to the Langenhagen plant to press the start button.". It lists the ABBA release as first popular music cd at that plant but the Billy Joel as first album released on cd. The Arrau release is not on Discogs at the moment by the way.
