It was released on 28 October 2002 in the United Kingdom and on 7 October 2003 in the United States. Out of Season is an album by Portishead frontwoman Beth Gibbons and former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb under the pseudonym Rustin Man. It was released in 2002 in the United Kingdom and in 2003 in the U. Out of Season is largely a folk album with jazz leanings, with Gibbons and Webb drawing more directly on the influences of Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Nick Drake, at which Portishead's work in trip-hop only hinted. Out of Season also features contributions from Gibb. Mysteries opens Out of Season brilliantly, folk arpeggios plucking their way around Beth's gasps while a cadre of gospel singers in the background oooooh the record into being. Tom the Model takes that cue and runs with it, answering delicate folk verses with a nicely retro big-band soul chorus. Beth attacks the song with verve, and even the hint of self-pity in the lyric is kicked into touch by her defiance. If only the rest of Out of Season displayed that energy. And now to the issue of Rustin Man: What is the deal with calling yourself Rustin Man Are we supposed to let that slide Turns out it's an alias for ex-Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb. Out of Season plays to Beth Gibbons' strengths as a vocalist and songwriter more than anything released prior by Portishead. On both Dummy and Portishead, her pained, worn, resilient voice was often made to sound as if it was as much an artifact as the Isaac Hayes and Lalo Schifrin samples. Album 2002 10 Songs. On both Dummy and Portishead, her pained, worn, resilient voice was often made to sound as if it was as much an artifact as the Isaac Hayes and Lalo Schifrin samples. truly amazing album with such a unique voice. I got intro this from my following of Portishead. If you like Portishead and want something showcasing the same vocal type but in a more background music style, you will definitely like this album. Notice negative comments about he press, mine came perfectly in heavy 180g and sounding perfect.
Marad
Was glad to see that this record finally got a reissue after several years, considering the original pressings have been steadily rising in price. Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the disc - a rather clean, distortion-free sound for such quiet productions. Side two was prone to a few clicks and pops, rather noticeable on the bare yet beautiful acoustic guitar track "Resolve." If you love this album and haven't been able to get a copy of it on vinyl, my recommendation would be to pick this one up from a reputable vendor and have yourself a listen. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Sironynyr
Sounds amazing! Clean flat pressing. Audiophile quality! Dynamic with a nice sound stage. It has a full, warm, rich and expansive sound. This one was done right!
Shaktiktilar
Mine is flat and dead quiet. Will run it through the cleaner this weekend but sounds great right out of the sleeve. Sound is warm and pleasant. Dynamic record, I turned it up high and it sounds great! Happy to own this on vinyl. Very static-y out of the sleeve and of course it was delivered with a bit of inner seam split as is customary in the US with any UK release. I'll take it! Well done and recommended.
Nenayally
I must of got lucky mine is perfect flat and no clicks. One of the best I have bought all year.
Mozel
I'm very surprise with much of bad appreciation, my copie is visually not perfect but sincerly it's without influence with the sound and even with quiet song
Abuseyourdna
Absolutely rubbish and just rubbish, lots of clicks, pops, and lots of unpleasant noises....album is masterpiece, but vinyl is piece of junk.
Moonshaper
Very disappointed to say the least. I pre-ordered this months ago from the UK to the US. I received it a couple of days ago and open it up. Brand new vinyl with scratches, stains, and noisy. Barely in VG+ condition and it sounds that way as well. I have 40+ year old vinyl that sounds better. This is the exact reason why I hate ordering new vinyl releases. There is literally like zero quality control and they charge ridiculous prices to boot. I wouldn't even probably buy this in a used record store in this condition. I'm tempted to return it but know that I would end up paying about half the cost in return shipping alone. Giving us free scratches on brand new vinyl isn't doing us a favor. Who's packing these records up at Optimal Media GmbH...Edward Scissorhands? I should've just bought a used original... ripoff.
fabscf
Must have got lucky as my copy arrived flawless but I've noticed so many new releases are arriving with surface marks or worse still scratches out of the wrap, not limited to any particular label or press plant either. Been buying vinyl since the 70's & the quality back then was more consistent to nowadays, seems this resurgence in vinyl has allowed the shoddy producers a window to peddle inferior goods.
Ance
I was thinking about this again today. I looked inside the inner sleeve and pulled out a small piece of vinyl hole cutout leftover from pressing.
Yayrel
I know! I went through 3 copies already, each one even more scratched than the previous one, right out of the shrink-wrap! It's unbelievable. Mastering wise this release could sound so stellar and good, but someone at the pressing plant is fucking up things at the very last step of production. The scratches almost look like they've been done by an angry employee at the pressing plant...
LoboThommy
One of my favourite albums of all time finally back on vinyl. Very good mastering and quiet pressing despite the occasional vinyl noise which was almost expected due to the quiet nature of these recordings. My copy however suffers from a visible scratch right out of the shrink-wrap that introduces more noise artifacts than expected on the last couple of tracks on side one. Will hopefully try my luck with another pressing next week. What is other people's experience for this vinyl? Did yours come scratch free?
Darkraven
My copie is not perfect but sincerly it's without influence with the sound and even with quiet song
Iarim
finally found a copy, actually, 3 copies and bought all. love this album so much and the one i spinned today is amazing. far superior to the original pressing. so happy this thing got repressed. this is a pretty heavy vinyl. seems like 180..
Shou
My copy is pretty bad, a lot of noises and crunches. Sad.
Phenade
really, my opened copy is perfect and most reviews on here have been excellent. try cleaning it. might be that.
Zainian
This was released the week I got married, had the CD all this time but now managed to grab a copy on vinyl for a reasonable price. This immediately went on my deck as soon as it arrived, no visual flaws & a good weight (196g), it sounds as good as it looks. Super quiet pressing with little sign of surface noise straight out of the sleeve.
Nanecele
I'm getting very little surface noise, think it's a great remaster and press. Only issue for me is a loud pop right at the end of side B.
Dreladred
... same here. Got it today, and spinning it now. LIke you said, quiet pressing with perhaps a little sign of surface noise straight out of the sleeve.
Sorryyy
Straight to the deck as well.Excellent pressing indeed. My copy did not include the sticker.
Weetont
Had this on my wants list for ages but prices have been far too high, great to hear a reissue is planned, see prices tumbling now
Frosha
Vinyl repress coming on 11th of October, long overdue !
Onoxyleili
Isn’t it about time this was repressed? Who in their right mind would pay the insane sums being asked for on here? I’ll wait it out until Go! Beat wakes up.
Enila
Re-issued on vinyl on 11th October 2019 in the U.K.
Umor
a timeless album that should to be listened to in it's entirety. the kind of stuff i would never have entertained had it not been for Portishead or (especially) Talk Talk although sounding noticeably different to either but similar quality to both bands. Given Gibbon's or Webb's respective histories I bet it took ages to make it.
Vijora
I agree with pheritier.vo's comment below. This record has really low surface noise which helps it sound great :)Musically the album is so quiet and not hearing any record noise helps enhance the intimate feeling this album conjures.
TheJonnyTest
I'm pretty certain that you have made a mistake. The sticker on the cover is not correct on the european version. It is the same as is on the counterfeit version. That's the only way my copy makes sence.
Balhala
I was relieved to see your comment. Because my copy’s sticker was the same as the counterfeit version. But it has mat cover and Runout :BETH +LP+1+A BETH +LP+1+B FRANK @ TOWNHOUSE. and I bought this at a Japanese record store in the end of 2002.
Purestone
Amazing pressing, very quiet which is good since that album is very quiet itself musically speaking.
Prince Persie
Fantastic album - incredible on vinyl. Discogs requires 10 words - how dumb
Helldor
Beth Gibbons we know as lead singer of the trip hop band Portishead but who is Rustin Man? It turns out to be the alter ego of the musician Paul Webb of Talk Talk, known. The two are good friends for years and making this record was the realisation of a long-held dream by them. The result is an extremely atmospheric album in which the characteristic voice and the songs of Beth and the spherical production of Webb complement each other just fine. The lyrics are mostly about aging and there is no forced tried to sound young and modern. The music fog hard beats and has both interfaces with the vocal jazz by Nina Simone and Billy Holiday as with the intimieme acoustic music from singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell. A special mention deserve the breathtaking vocals, in which the expressive potential of Gibbons ' voice be used to the full.
Goktilar
Nice review! I have this in storage and your review reminded me of just why and how much I really enjoy the LP.
Thabel
Hello! This album is one of my favourites. Calm and sad at the same time. I'm looking for something similar to it. Any reccomendations? Thank you all.
Galanjov
You might consider Mia Todd Doi - The Golden StateFor me, it possesses a similar degree of melancholy and arty nuance akin to Gibbons solo work on Out of Season
Quendant
The sound quality of the bootleg is not good.
Gavinrage
Not good at all. The needle shakes in the initials tracks.
Uttegirazu
there are a lot of counterfeit versions of this album on the market (all pressed pre-Music on Vinyl repress) does anyone own one? and could say what the differences are between the original and counterfeits? (maybe the matrix info?)
Dalallador
I'm not so sure about that. I have two copies, both with real stickers and both matte covers, they have the exact same runout and inner sleeves and both sound the same. The only real difference is the sticker for each has a bit different info and one has very slightly less bold gold/brass colouring on the cover. (one with a real sticker with 'Nominated' info like this one, and the other with a real sticker has the music magazine review quotes). If anything, the one with the supposed 'counterfeit' sticker sounds a touch better than the 'original' vinyl. Someone might have to go straight to the label to know for sure. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Rainshaper
I know it's been a couple of years, but to answer your question, the counterfeit issue has a glossy cover and imitated 'sticker' printed on cover, so not an actual sticker. The original issue has a mat cover and a real sticker. I have owned the counterfeit before buying the original press.

Beth Gibbon’s wounded vocal delivery is part of the Portishead mystique: her voice, equal parts hurt and desire, is unmistakable. Her collaboration with Rustin Mann, Out of Season, will surprise listeners expecting another Portishead redux. Instead, the arrangements are much simpler, aimed more at the acoustics, rather than sonics. Beth’s vocals, obviously, take center stage; “Tom the Model” has some gospel choruses backing her up, but hers is the central figure. “Show” is just her and a piano, while “Romance” adds some horns and background voices for atmosphere. “Spider Monkey” has some of that Portishead theremin, but it’s used sparingly; same goes for the wobbly electric guitar on “Funny Time of Year” -- there’s a whisper of Portishead on there. Beth Gibbon’s voice alone could almost carry any project, but her pairing with Rustin Mann’s quiet sensibilities makes this a worth vehicle for her talents.
Gindian
Very nice review. These many years later here I sit reading what I know to be true about both Portishead and Gibbons. You refer to her collaborator as Rustin Mann. A later review is calling Rustic Man, Paul Webb formerly of Talk Talk. AllMusic cites Paul Webb, too. Regardless... Your review remains spot on. Thanks for sharing!
