About Album

The Noise Made by People is the debut studio album by British indie electronic band Broadcast. It was released on 20 March 2000 by Warp to critical acclaim. Pitchfork placed The Noise Made by People at No. 177 on its list of The Top 200 Albums of the 2000s. The album's first single Echo's Answer, was released in 1999 and featured at No. 178 on Pitchfork's list of The Top 200 Tracks of the 1990s. All tracks are written by Broadcast. Broadcast recording, engineering, mixing. The Noise Made By People. While their analog electronics and quavering sound effects suggest the avant-garde output of Delia Derbyshire and The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, their songwriting evokes classic Brill Building pop. The result is an unusually gentle take on psychedelia, where medieval madrigals meet Mellotron Echo's Answer, and harpsichords punctuate vintage synthesizers Come On Let's Go . Listen free to Broadcast The Noise Made by People Long Was the Year, Unchanging Window and more. 12 tracks 45:29. After being mired in the studio for nearly three years, Broadcast returned with their first proper full-length album, The Noise Made by People, a collection of more shimmering, weightless pop that is nostalgic for yesterday's visions of the future but remains on the cutting edge of contemporary music. Where their early singles collected on 1997's Work and Non-Work painted small, quaint portraits of their retro-futurism, The Noise Made by People delivers their sound in widescreen, filmic grandeur. Long Was the Year one-ups the avant leanings of most of these juxtaposition-experimenting acts by making these advances work in the context of memorable pop songs. Special praise must be given to the band for the sonic imprint here. But for all the sound and song, Broadcast's vision seems relatively narrow, and several ideas are spread a bit too thinly across the album's length. The band obviously have the talent and the means. The Noise getsThe Noise Made by People is the first proper album by the English retro-futurists Broadcast. And it is also one of their best. The Noise gets its excellence in two elements: the usage of analogue techniques with modern recording and the haunting vocals by the late Trish Keenan. Her voice seems to guide us through the bleak mood of the songs like a light in the tunnel. A rather feeble light indeed. If any one word describes The Noise Made by People its Patience. Broadcast are in no rush to get where theyre heading. Melodies unfurl with ease, the full contours of each of Keenans vocal lines are felt, each word given plenty of breathing room. Broadcast would go on to solidify their songwriting abilities but never again would they create anything quite as rich and beguiling as those twin masterpieces. As a result, The Noise Made by People feels a bit dominated by those two masterful singles. Still, The Noise Made by People remains a rich piece of sonic landscape. One that still waits to be discovered and explored

Just a question... the "liner notes" are some kind of joke?
Like others have said, the reissue sound quite nice. BUT, I have now gone through three copies that have the exact same surface defects on the A-side. The most noticeable is a single pop in the lead up to the 2nd chorus in "Come On Let's Go".Again, THREE different sealed copies all with the same pop in the exact same place. When examining the vinyl, it appears there is some sort of blip/particle right at the spot causing problems, but nothing will dislodge it. Wondering if this is a general pressing issue or if I am just seriously unlucky and keeping buying from a bad batch?
I eventually got a repress from the first batch in 2015 and it was perfect. Some issues with a more recent run I guess.
I also had problems with the re-issue skipping in the 1st track. After 2 copies I gave up and bought a reasonably priced original.
Follow up: I have now tried FIVE copies of this LP...some from the US, some shipped from Europe, all with the above described pop happening right as the second chorus drops on 'Come On Let's Go'. I can literally see the defect in the vinyl at the same place on all copies. Rather frustrating that I can't find a good version of one of my favorite LPs.
Must be former as i checked mine again and its perfect. People have had similar problems with Warps boards of canada reissues. Quality control obviously not always what it should be.
Masterpiece. I listen to it for 17 years now and it never gets old.
Was surprised to discover the song called "Until Then" is largely based on a sample from a track called "Grasshopper" from the soundtrack of the 1970s TV series called Kung Fu.

a really nice remaster and reissue of the rare original LP, which i had previously bought on CD. every sonic detail for some reason feels a bit more properly in place, the bass is more present but not overbearing, the vocals are pleasant with the effects on them and everything else being more prominent. the album is still timeless and flows as well as an album should. Reissue has a nice booklet that is not stapled but smells like nice old paper should, i ilke it and it also has a nice visual aesthetic with mostly cryptic lyrics. it is gate fold which makes sense considering the thickness of the lyrics pamphlet and also the vinyl is of decent grade, not really thin, a nice girth. overall A+
Good god, this repress sounds amazing. HUGE soundstage and whisper quiet. I'm noticing elements in some songs I've never heard (from CD). Amazing album and a spectacular job Warp! Are all the new represses this great? BoC I'm hoping?!?!?
<delete> <delete>
Insanely nice repress. Super quiet.
Did some copies come with Broadcast plastic record bags - I just played this and found one?
Yes, mine did, and I bought it directly from Warp.
Fantastic album, finally repressed, and it sounds very good!Although I haven't listened to an original first pressing copy of this album for direct comparison, I can say this repress has wonderfully quiet backgrounds and a nice big soundstage...A very refreshing find in a sea of mediocre reissues and represses!Well done Warp Records, now I don't have to spend $100 on an original.
I agree!
Official repress for march 2015!
There are elements of pop music I love. There are elements of pop music I despise. Broadcast take away all the extraneous frivolities of the shite you hear on the radio, mix in thrilling experimental interludes and provide stunning melodies that you can't get out of your brain for days. I don't usually like saying things like 'this is what pop music should sound like' but..... this is what pop music should sound like!
<I>The Noise Made By People</I>, Broadcast’s first proper album comes on like gangbusters, smoothing out the rough edges of <I>Work and Non Work</I> while still retaining the skewed melodies and instrumentation. The songs verge a little more on the melancholy, from the slow, meditative “Unchanging Window” to the siren call of “You Can Fall.” There’s also the extraordinary “Come On Let’s Go,” which manages to be both poppy and experimental. “Papercuts” is similarly catchy -- it’s a tune that’ll be stuck in your head like a malignant tumor. Again, the lyrics rise above the clichés and triteness that plague pop music. A wonderful album.
