Such sweeping ambition isn't necessarily alien to Bruce Springsteen, a rocker who designed his self-styled 1975 breakthrough as a larger-than-life hybrid of AM pop and FM album rock profundity - a daring fusion that eventually favored the latter, perhaps because it was easier for the E-Street Band to fill arenas with cranked amps and big riffs. Western Stars contains none of that rabble rousing

Great press. Flat and quiet. Clear vocal with crisp sound. Great job was done here.
This is the second B&N exclusive vinyl that I have purchased, and both are average pressings. The surface noise is unacceptable for a brand new record IMHO.
Wonderful pressing. Warm, rich sound on my turntable. One of Bruce's best works.
Beautiful looking package the blue really stands out on the turntable fantastic sound quality well engineered
Well if anyone's still waiting for their's to arrive, mine finally made it today (6/29).
I have received the LP, refund, and the poster. To my knowledge, the refund hasn't been canceled, but I will look into it
Did you get your refund? Mine was pending on PayPal but then it was canceled. I’m guessing by accepting the record in the mail they voided the refund.
Mine is from the US store, only has Columbia logo.
Did it come from the US store or from the UK store? Does it have only the Columbia logo on the back, or both the Columbia and the Sony Music logos?
Yes, got the email as well...but no record till date!
I just got mine today too! I did receive that email and they’re sending some type of limited edition poster too! That’s a classy move!
After I received mine, I received an email saying I was getting a complete refund over the delay. Anyone else get that email?
Inner sleeves look like they have been run over in the factory. Why can't GZ get records into inner sleeves into and then into an outer sleeve without damaging them?
Waow ! This album is splendid. Reminds of Nebraska or The Ghost of Tom Joad. This is how americana should sound in my humble opinion. The orchestral production amplifies the feeling of wide open spaces like the West...
No it sounds really great ! I often turn up the volume as it makes it sound even bigger than it already is... An amazing experience...
Does it sound like a good press? Any problem at all?
In my opinion this album is beautiful...there are many songs I would listen to every evening when the sun goes down or early in the morning...there is a great emotion into it if you can feel it..I personally loved orchestral arrangements..thanks Bruce for music and words...Ps: for collectors...I got the special bag together with lp...very nice.
so 51 minutes of music needs to be on 2 records? Not sure I understand why.
To avoid compression of the grooves. Anything over 22 minutes will suffer signal loss.
20 minutes to 22:30 per side is generally considered to be the maximum playing time for the best quality of the recording. Sometimes a good cutting engineer can produce good results with longer sides, but the sound is still compromised in some way. The trend of longer albums since the CD era pretty much requires that most albums these days require two pieces of vinyl. Although they probably could have pressed it to three sides and still been under 22:30 per side, but I haven't looked or timed it out to know for sure.
Where is the US LP pressed? The EU one is pressed at GZ Vinyl in the Czech Republic. Is the vinyl in the US version differently sourced? Any info from the deadwax would be helpful.
The EU black vinyl is pressed at MPO but the coloured editions were GZ pressings.
The EU edition is pressed by MPO, not GZ. Great pressing!
So I preordered this from Barnes and Noble...upon first listen the album sounded great until I reached the 1st song on side C, Chasin' Wild Horses. There were 2 terrible skips in it. Took it back to a local Barnes and Noble and exchanged it. To my chagrin the exact same song on Side C had 2 skips in it...AGAIN. Has anyone else had this problem? And yes this is very much a clear vinyl pressing with VERY minimal blue and white swirls. Looks nothing like the preorder picture did at all.Just to let everyone know my 5 star rating is for the album itself...not the so so pressing.
That's too bad. On the bright side, I wouldn't expect Barnes to give you any grief over the return if you aren't happy with the item.
great ant
I had a minor skip on side C as well, but upon inspection with a magnifying glass I found a little black spec in the grooves. I took a microfiber cloth and scrubbed it out and now no skip, no pops - plays perfectly.
I got through Chasin' Wild Horses and Sundown with out issue, but there was a big skip during Somewhere North Of Nashville. Returning it to Barnes for sure.
Take it from a guy who used to work at Turtles, CD's certainly can have defects when shipped to the store, it's just that back when there were such things as record stores around, defective discs were usually pulled from the shelves before too many got out. It usually was different types of problems, such as the wrong music pressed on the discs, but CD's are just as susceptible to problems as vinyl.
My copy does not skip, but there were several distracting pops throughout "Chasin' Wild Horses" (Song 1, Side C), and one or two pops on "Sundown" (Song 2, Side C). The rest of the album sounds great. I washed the disc with the Spin-Clean system, and now there's just one pop on Horses and no pops on Sundown. Try giving your discs a wash!
About 3/4 through side C there are a few loud pops on my copy. It managed to work it’s way through without manual intervention but is annoying. Don’t blame your turntable, as the one comment suggested. ????
No worries. The vinyl comes with a download card. So purchasers of vinyl have the digital experience covered. Regardless of your preference for CD, vinyl is a commercial product and customers should expect pressings be void of defects. Have you never had a glitchy CD? I have. Either way, it’s not a good experience and it’s just the kind of information we should be sharing here.
It’s 100% your turntable. Adjust the pressure on the arm.
you can buy it on CD why not? CDs do not have such when new
An excellent pressing, great mastering to vinyl, and a great Springsteen album-- but nothing like his older material-- this has deliberate pop vibe with a full string section and and big wide open arrangements. Artists need to try new things and IMO this experiment was a success. Best album he's released in years...
Musical Aura Island
I've tried, but I just can't get into this album. Love Springsteen but this whole album is a little bland. Not a fan of the album's tone and the horns. Nothing really sticks out on repeated listenings. I thought this might be similar to Devils and Dust or Nebraska but nowhere near. The vinyl was clear until the last track. Quite a few pops and some weird anomalies there. Judging by the barcode I got an American pressing from Amazon and not the European one and I live in the UK. I bought into all the early glowing reviews but this album is not for me. Probably send it back and get Tunnel of Love. The writing is superb on that and i never tire of listening to it.
Definitely more clear. I wouldn’t even know to look for blue if not for the hype sticker.
Yeah, it’s clear with white smoke and an occasional speck of blue.
Tyler Is Not Here
So it seems if your the die hard Springsteen fan then this is maybe a step too far for youThe 'Western Stars’ author has felt impelled to reassure fans that he’ll be back recording and touring with the E Street Band later this year. It’s hard to miss the hint of “normal service will be resumed as soon as possible”With hints of Glen Campbell’s collaborations with Jimmy Webb or Harry NilssonIn my opinion this album with its beautiful  orchestrations and swooning backing vocals will sell very well and will probably be one of Springsteens best selling albums on vinyl
Is there a difference between the Bruce's store exclusive vinyl and the indie light blue one? I can't see the former listed here.. Are they the same color variant? Thanks!
The UK indie blue vinyl is a much lighter blue than the official Sprinsteen web store release. Both are pressed using the Chris Bellman cut, and the web store release has a US sleeve.
Just received my copy and it is the same colour as on the website, not like the one shown on the pictures on the release here.
Have you actually got your Webstore Exclusive?I am still awaiting receipt and have had numerous email exchanges with them as it was preordered the day they went live. Disappointed not to have received on release day.As far as pressings go, I have been advised there were 1,500 Webstore Exclusives pressed for UK. Compared to 7,000 Independent Retailer Exclusive.
Some - like me - got one blueish lp and one clear one from b&n. Take a look...
I’m guessing different. The Barnes & Noble exclusive that I just picked up is clear with “smoke” and not listed here yet either.
At first I thought Springsteen was laying down something akin to his classic Nebraska, but alas no, where aside from the numbers “Tucson Train,” “Western Stars” and “Sleepy Joe’s Cafe,” there was little that reminded me of the man who splinted my world back in the early 70’s.To say that this is a new sound for Springsteen would be an understatement, nearly every song is laced with string arrangements to cover up his inability to develop a song and carry it through to fruition under his own steam. And yes, the critics are already lining up to phrase Western Stars, saying such things as “A album that evokes the enthusiasm and carefreeness of days gone by.” Of course that leaves me to wonder just which bygone days were being referred to. Others say that the record is, “Gorgeous, consistently absorbing, one of the most character driven albums of Springsteen’s career.” Well, that’s just not true. What is true is the the orchestral string arrangements lightly evoke the 60’s and 70’s sounds of Glen Campbell, Harry Nilsson, Burt Bacharach and of course Roy Orbison around the edges. That being said, as with those afore mentioned artists, this album doesn’t hang together well, Western Stars sounds for all the world like Bruce Springsteen had a great deal of trouble writing this, that he felt compelled to deliver an album and what he delivered is unclear, uncertain and uncharacteristic. With the album’s title having revealing a double meaning of sorts, referring not only to celestial bodies, but also in the title track, to an actor of long lost western movies who’s grown older now and living to some extent in the past, where he attempts to make ends meet by appearing in commercials and enjoying the fact that people will buy him drinks simply because he was once killed by John Wayne in a B grade movie … in other words, he’s like the ex-high school baseball player of “Glory Days.”This isn’t an anthem album, it’s not even a rock album, this is an album about Springsteen’s glory days, yet he doesn’t have the courage to say so, more content to move from rock to pseudo-country, partly telling his story through the guise of some imaginary characters that have no relevance to me or to Bruce’s life, when it would have been so much more glorious to make an actual honest album about himself growing older, where is journey feels less sure, his stance less certain and the fractured image of the once greatest man on the musical earth, challenged to write even a single good song with authentic emotional honesty. And that’s why this assemblage of songs hang together so granularly, devoid of any sense of cohesiveness, other that the orchestral maneuvers that float around in the ether to tie things together. Just listen, the sonic elements heard here are certainly beautiful in the direct manner of a highly polished rodeo belt-buckle, but they’re juxtaposed with the fine thread of an emotional sorrow that run though all of these ghost filled numbers, suggesting a tiredness beyond description. This isn’t a cozy album, it’s designed to tug at your heart strings, probably one of the easiest and most disingenuous sort of songs one can write. Western Stars is all so pleasant, so stylish, all so grown up and so unremarkably filled with the refrain of pleading. Of course, the Mamas & Papas did this sort of thing on “California Dreamin’” and Brian Wilson laid it all out on “In My Room,” where those songs had you singing along, we remembered them, they were crystal in their vision and insight, but not here, I can’t remember even one number from this album and it has just finished playing.Hey, I haven’t really enjoyed most of Springsteen’s later albums, where I’ve taken the songs I like the best, added them to an ever-growing collection and have a grouping of numbers that resonates best for me. It’s hard to hear this album, it’s equally hard to realize that Springsteen at nearly 70 still can’t bring about an authentic autobiographical song about the waining of his years, the coursing of his life, or able to look back on those years and aspirations and set them to musical verse. Western Stars will never be a gem, you’ll play it once, then play it again to make sure you heard it right the first time, then never play it again. And you know, if my words don’t ring true for you, then I’m sincerely happy for you man, ‘cause you’ve got something to cling to, while I’m left dancing in the dark.*** At the Springsteen store you can cop the vinyl, a double disc set pressed to 180 gram blue wax. Review by Jenell Kesler
Review not helpfull. This is an amazing album, great songs and well produced. This shows how great he really is. This is why Im Bruce Springsteen fan since 1979....
Well gosh ... I'm sure sorry my review wasn't helpful, yet it wasn't awful either, it was exact, I suggested reasons for my thoughts and considered the overall character of Bruces's music. Sure, I'll agree with you, a good singer will always find a new way to sing his stories, yet this good singer hasn't found a profound way of expressing those stories here. So, rather than pointing an accusatory finger in my direction, why don't you lay out 800 words on why this is such a fine album. You haven't listed it in your collection. I'm entirely happy that you dig the new Bruce regardless.
your review is not helpful. It´s just awful. A good singer will always find new ways to sing his stories.
