Ok, I decided to "relisten" some DM albums which I had forgotten about, namely everything from Ultra - up to now. Maybe I had not listened correctly or not enough.... but that was it not. Indeed these "newer" DM albums are really boring and PTA is irritating with it digital clipping (glad some others find this too)...Ultra was fine compared to this here for example...there is not ONE song which grabs me. And many seem "skip" material and this was DeMo... And btw. if you listen very good you can hear some small samples in the background from 80ties albums heheThis here and PTA and Exciter (Ex-Sleeper?) get all only 2 points.
Zainian
Weak songs.Irritating soul-like formula singing.Wrong producer.Too long, poorly curated.Poor graphics. Not what you would expect from Depeche Mode if we grew up with them from the early eighties...
Quynaus
Yeah I just wanted to write something simmilar.... there is not ONE song which grabs me. And many seem "skip" material and this was DeMo...

I bought this CD at a well known retailer, how could it be unofficial?

Why is the year of release on this version 2006? It appears to be a simple typo. All other versions of this record were released in 2009.
Kardana
This album is not goodthey went further with their electronic sound
Kerry
It seems like the quality of this recording is subpar. I was hoping that it would be better on vinyl than it is on CD and MP3 but it feels off. Anyone else share that observation?

I'm here to put up a case for the defence of Ben Hillier, who seems to have been blamed by a lot of DM fans for the supposed paucity of the 3 DM albums he produced. First of all; Hillier did not write the songs, so if you consider the songs on those albums, below par, then you really ought to look at Messieurs Gore and Gahan. Ask yourself: as a producer, what is one supposed to do with a track like "Another hole to feed"? It's hard to believe that Gore didn't have anything he considered more worthy of inclusion on the album than this! It appears to me, that the 2 warring factions have come to an arrangement, whereby Gahan is guaranteed to have 3 of "his" compositions included on all DM albums, regardlesscof whether there's better material or not. This is not a problem when he's supplying material like "I want it all", "Cover me" or "Come back" - yes I'm apparently alone in thinking it one of the better tracks on SOTU - but "Another hole to feed" must surely be a contender for the all time low point in the DM canon. I'm a big admirer of all 3 albums, and I feel that this is to a large degree, due to Hillier's attention to detail. There are lots of little touches, which as unlikely as it might seem, draw the ear; I'm referring to things like the percussive sound ("wood block"?) that comes in at around the 2:02 mark on "Secret to the end". From "Playing the angel", the single "Precious", sounds to my ears, at least, like an absolute classic Depeche mode single, that puts "Enjoy the silence" to shame. To my astonishment, many even seem to be blaming Hillier for the flawed mastering of these records. Give the poor sod a break! If I have a complaint about these albums, then it is that there is too much in the way of undisguised guitar, but then this is something that has become a constant in DM's music, ever since "Songs of Faith and Devotion". I appreciate that Gore considers himself a guitarist, first and foremost, so perhaps he could record unplugged versions of DM songs - which he could give away as free downloads - and get it out of his system, leaving the albums relatively guitar free?!
Burgas
Thank you for your reply, which I've just noticed now. You mention a lot of my favourite songs from the 3 Hillier produced albums, at the end of your comment. It's a pity some of those didn't make the standard release but were only available as extra tracks, as I feel that the inclusion of tracks like Ghost and Oh Well and the omission of Hole to feed and Corrupt, could have greatly changed perceptions of Sounds of the Universe. To your list of tracks, I'd also add John the revelator, I want it all, Macro, In Chains, Fragile Tension, Wrong, The Child inside, Alone and maybe even a few others. Now, I'd challenge any Depeche mode fan to tell me that that wouldn't make for a great DM compilation album! Black Celebration I think improves with age, Music for the masses, likewise but although many would consider it heresy to say so, I personally find Violator to be one of the least interesting of DM's albums. Some really good singles in Policy of truth and World in my eyes but other than that probably the only other track I really like, is Waiting for the night. I don't know why this album has never really appealed to me but apart from Construction time again, Spirit, and Exciter (none of which I've ever owned) it is my least played DM album and I've owned it in one format or another for many, many years. I'd go as far as to say that it is as overrated as A Broken frame is underrated.Glad to see that somebody else doesn't hear Come back as being a total mess!
Kezan
I agree with a lot of this. As a life-long DM fan myself, their best period IMO was most everything up through Violator. However, the Hillier trio of albums have a lot of fantastic songs, but also a lot of songs I don't like at all - so it's hit or miss. The good songs, though, are what I consider quintessential DM tracks, and are far better than anything off Exciter. For instance, I don't know how or why fans seem to dismiss these albums when they have songs like "Peace", "Nothing's Impossible", "Come Back", "Suffer Well", "Lillian", "Broken", "Ghost", "Light", "Esque", "Oh Well", "Jezebel", and a few more which account for some of their finest output. That said, nothing beats the Black Celebration - Music for the Masses - Violator trio of albums.
Wal
Why is this box so cheap? It has content and memorabilia that would go for $80 elsewhere.
Snowseeker
The box is extremely well made and the album is great too, if you’re stuck in the eighties it’s only your problem
Shadowbourne
I think this is the worst Depeche Mode album ever made. The songs are weak and terrible. The only song that saves this album is "Peace" plus 5 tracks in the second CD, which all of them are worthy. The box is very bad constructed. The CDs are stored in terrible cardsleeves. To me it doesn't make it really valuable when they could have come up with four-fold digipack, or add the LP to it. That's why it's cheap.
JUST DO IT
Wrong OBI photo! Replace it.

Can the items of this box be sold separately?I would be interested in acquiring the "Bonus & Remixes" disc.
Malanim
I think you are wrong. There is no specification on the box that the items are not to be sold separately. I don't see a problem with it, since it is a original item. If the owner wants to split it apart, it's his own need or will. The same happens with Promo CDs. Someone said they are not "for sale" of any form. But courts ruled out it is OK to sell them.

Yes, I am interested in that disc! Do you have it?

I feel a bit sorry for all these dissapointed die hard fans out there. I think that beeing dissapointed from a new Depeche Mode record is part of the game for fanboys from the early days. A bit funny and obvious i think. For me this is for sure a brilliant record from start to finish. Great songwriting and very intersting soundwork - would love have an instumental version of this album.

I can't believe someone made all of those scans!

Nice presentation, badges!! tons of photos - for what ever reason, yes you look well, now go programme a drum machine for the tour!!The DVD 'Making Of...' is simply quite fascinating... Super album, such a slick cacophony of noize. PEACE, BD

Great album, keeps on giving... full of well produced little gems plus a cupple of DM classics, at least ten classics actually... nice little threat... most on here are so plesant and accessible... headphones are the way forward...it's a kind of magic, magic... PEACE, XBD

I had so high expectations for this album. The leading single Wrong is just brilliant but it's very easy to see why they picked it. The album has no other singles on it. It barely has any good tracks at all. Half of the album is listenable and the rest you forget the moment you've heard them. Why Gahan should have three tracks on it when one of them (Come Back) is worse than any of his solo work is beyond me. There are some good extra tracks on the box set that could have turned this into a decent record. It begins quite alright. In Chains is a slow but decent opener. The Gahan track Hole To Feed is quite catchy and Wrong is just outstandingly good. Fragile Tension, In Sympathy and Perfect all sound way to similar and uninteresting. Miles Away/The Truth Is at least has some experimenting with the drum sound. The album closer Corrupt is another of the "good" tracks.I've tried really hard to like it but together with Ultra this really is a crap record coming from this band. Vintage equipment alone won't make a great songs.

I agree with you. Come Back is worse than any of his solo work. A mess of a song.

Yes, the great one! as for me it's another one of my fav DM albums among BC, Ultra, Exciter, PTA and probably Violator too...

There is some serious atonement going on with this new Mode record. For the first time since Songs of Faith and Devotion this band are pushing themselves, they are innovating, they are not contentedly spewing out the norm. After the last go-round with these boys, I'd written them off. Playing the Angel had to be the lowest point since Ultra from them. I was smugly playing Recoil non-stop, figuring the prima dona finishing academy had caved in upon itself for the final time. What was next, a solo album from fletch? As their lead single intones and is titled, I had it all wrong. Instead of vintage gear taking presidence in their press releases, they just put it to work and dropped the cynical marketing ploys of the last album. Gahan has written some of the songs on here, yes, but for the first time ever he and Gore have actually collaborated on a track. That is correct, they worked together from the ground up and I have to say the final result is noteworthy. The more I listen to this thing (and there have been plenty of listens) the more acutely aware I am of just how hard they really did work on Sounds of the Universe. Watching the dvd which came with my boxset I'm numbed by the level of detail they focused in on and honed their craft to. It's much like a dull blunt blade becoming perfectly recurring, glinting with conviction. Ready to take on all comers. To put it plainly this is an ass kicking Depeche Mode we are confronted with, not the tepid almost apologetic lot they've been languishing as the last decade or so.I am, to put it mildly... shocked.Given enough time and exclusion from the world, they could have topped their halycon days easily with this one but four years was long enough. Depeche Mode are exciting again and what's more there's that element which has been missing a very long time: fear. You don't know if Gahan's singing for you or at you with this one. Perhaps he's just singing for himself but I will say they're experimenting once again... only now they drink coffee and eat at healthy cafes, they spend a lot of time listening to what they're doing and my word are they involved in the creative process. It makes me have to eat my own words and abandon the safe hutch I've been ensconced within since Alan left. The Mode have returned, everyone. Do sit up and take note. If they can top this little stroke of insidious innovation I'll be surprised but Sounds of the Universe is a literal resurrection.

I must admit that the "In Chains" got me form the first second and made me open to the complete album. I was completely disappointed by "Playing The Angel" (for me one of their worst albums) and thus curious (and frightened) about what this album would sound like. For my taste they finally found their way back and connected well to their earlier sound that I personally have missed a lot since the release of "Songs of Faith and Devotion". For me, "Violator" is their best album and I find that SOTU follows that sound pretty well. Not to get me wrong - I don't want a copy of "Violator", but of all albums since "Songs of Faith..", SOTU is the one that continues the sound of "Violator " and "Music for the Masses" best. Maybe it's just that I hang on to these old analogue synth-sounds, but on the other hand it's the sound that DM stands for. It's the sound that was defined by DM to a better part and that is also typical for Mute Records. It's just good to me to find out that with this album Depeche Mode is Depeche Mode again.

OMG, This is now my FAVORITE album by Depeche Mode. I have been a hard-core fan since 1984, and for awhile 'Some Great Reward' was my favorite album by DM, and then for years I considered 'Black Celebration' my favorite album by DM. But now, 'Sounds Of The Universe' takes the top spot. This is Depeche Mode at their best. A deep but optimistic album that takes you on a journey, this time they blend excellent lyrics with thoughtful music and heartfelt vocals. This album is catchy and memorable, yet it is also not a "singles" album, or a "hits" album, it is more of a consistent album that flows flawlessly, every track on here is excellent on the album, and if you get a chance, the tracks on the Box-Set version are just as amazing. I really love how Depeche Mode have blended the antique analog synths with the newer electro sounds of today. I really hope they continue in this direction. The song-writing by Martin and Dave are top notch here. My favorite track remains to be 'Peace', and also the latest single 'Fragile Tension'. Other tracks near the top of my favorites list are: 'Wrong', 'Come Back', 'Perfect' and 'In Sympathy'.

Oh man, I can't believe how BAD this album is, I mean REALLY bad! This is DM's worst album since their debut album 'Speak and Spell'. They chose the wrong era to revisit, [can't stand early synthpop or it's current label "electro clash"]instead of the pinnacle of their career, the 'Black Celebration-'Violator' era. Cheesy synth sounds abound, with subpar lyrics and the worst of sins, no catchy songs, none. Add to that Gore's irritating guitar licks, Gahan's lame songs [never did think he had any song writing talent] and poor choice for producer, you have the receipe for a complete disaster. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge DM fan, but since Ultra, their output has gone steadily downhill. Time for these lads to pack it in. Definitely a "contract" release. DM RIP.
X-MEN
I totally agree except for the Speak & Spell comment, I think Ultra was their career lowpoint, but this one is probably worse, at least Ultra had "It's No Good" to slightly redeem itself, but this one, other than "In Sympathy" I can't think of one song on this album that I can even remember how it goes because I have no desire to listen to them anymore aside from that first time I listened to the album all the way through. you were right when you said not one catchy song on the album. I can't even believe (whoever) picked "Wrong" and "Peace" as the first singles, those are the 2 WORST songs on the album. and yes not only does Martin need to cut out the guitar, but I've gotten really tired of his cheesy overemotional love songs and singing as well. he gets worse with every album.

I agree that this is easily DM's worst release in years. I've been a fan for many years and always anxiously await the next album. When this one came out disapprovingly listened to the 1st few tracks and then ignored the album for a few months. I've since gone back to give it a 2nd try and I'd have to say it has grown on me a bit. Don't get me wrong, I still believe it is still one of their worst. Perhaps I just learned to accept it for what it is.Bring back Alan Wilder!

My opinion about this record is somewhere in the middle of the two previous reviews here. "Sounds of the Universe" is a record that doesn't hurt, but there is also not much to catch my attention, neither in a negative nor in a positive way. The analog sounds of the songs are great if you like electronic music, but I think the weak point is that almost every song gets out of breath, this record just misses climaxes. It's hard to say this about a record of this band, but "Sounds of the Universe" is almost well produced background music. So it's a typical 3/5 for me.

I was immediately attracted to the review posted regarding Depeche Mode's current universal affair... Cannot tell whether it's just me but I get quite confused by most people giving favourable reviews of a rather shallow and utterly spineless new material. Myself being a dedicated listener of theirs, comparing it to any previous album, 'Sounds of the Universe' is no crime - however, Depeche chose to dismiss many other fine retro examples from their rich and potent electro pop catalogue. Electronic bleeps and minimal exercise the group seem to follow, especially on their previous two albums - Exciter' and 'Playing the Angel', now suddenly slide off in a direction of boring, repeated cliches. Not that Depeche were free of cliches earlier on - giving a specific trademark to their catalogue with every next of albums and singles (recognisable vocal affectations, balladic value against stripped down beats, etc.). Only now it's just too plain obvious Martin, Dave and Fletch are simply no longer inspired. They insist on enjoying the creative process but the final result is three people and their close associates getting nowhere particular, stretching half baked songs into something of a rushed studio album. Which has its moments but doesn't explore any new ground - something the very title tries to imply. The music side of the album is a list of practically straight rewrites - In Chains, Perfect, Corrupt, Peace, In Sympathy, Come Back, Fragile Tension, Little Soul, Hole To Feed, Spacewalker, Miles Away... - concerning which, no matter how precise your personal impressions by comparison go, you won't be 'Wrong'. The only song that stands out from the lot is 'Jezebel' - it could fit even more into Martin's new, as yet unreleased, eventual solo-album. 'Sounds of the Universe' is a poor reprise of the group's (and occasionally others' as well) uncomparrably better past (and present, if you insist) - the efforts put more into promoting the album's vintage gear than the actual quality of the very songs. Dave's vocals are punching at full, impressively strong pace but also sound less convincing of a rock singer Dave desperately tries (proving) to be. There is too much drama over pathetic, if not entirely shallow lyrics. Wrapped in even more dreadful Anton Corbijn's artwork, 'Sounds of the Universe' represent one weak spot of a legendary group - ironically, that is also an accomplishment. They headed for the grandiose but got sucked into a black hole.

After almost 30 years of crafting the finest catalogue of electronic music in the world, where do you go and what do you do? Sounds Of The Universe is where you go, bolder, fearless, provocative and most definitely not playing by any of the rules is what you do. It clicks and it grinds, it growls and it whispers, it provokes and pushes boundaries when their appear to be none left to push and just when you thought you got to know Depeche Mode, finally, they turn our theories and demands on their heads. If thats not the sign of a great album and a great band, then I don't know what is.

Depeche Mode is finally back! A good album that probably won't appeal to the masses, but most of DM fans will be satisfied. It will not do good at clubs or partys, but this is nice music listening to at home and while driving. But this is not only synth-pop, it's more like electro but with hint of synths everywhere:) DM shows with this album that they care more about their fans than the average people out there! DM is the symbol of creativity, and for the fans it's not about the kind of songs the make, it's all 'bout the music they create! (although i know a lot of fans that are dissapointed with this album..) However I'm still waiting for another 'Precious' song :) TRACK REVIEW: #01 8/10 In Chains - A great start, electrozizing music at it's best. #02 8/10 Hole To Feed - Nice follow up! One of my favourite tracks on the album! There is actually hints of house elements in this song. #03 6/10 Wrong - The first single from the album, but not my favourite, actually for me the weakest song on the album! Melody is ok, but 'wrong' is for me somehwat annoying actually... it's a bit wrong :p #04 7/10 Fragile Tension - Really nice start, but it doesn't follow up. However it's a bit catchy. #05 6/10 Little Soul - Silent song in old DM style. Nice for home listening and relaxing, but it doesn't really fit in this 'electro-album'. #06 8/10 In Sympathy - Simply love the electro-synths in this song. #07 9/10 Peace - Yes! Pretty sure this will become one of my favourite DM's of all time. Best track on the album (atm). #08 8/10 Come Back - Exciting electro melody that will maybe sound even better in some days! #09 7/10 Spacewalker - Relaxing melody with spacey sounds! Pretty cool acutally! #10 8/10 Perfect - Nowhere near perfect, but another highlight! #11 6/10 Miles Away/The Truth Is - This is *miles away* the song i wanted to here now! Okay, enough joking. It's actually quite catchy, but nothing special here. #12 7/10 Jezebel - Another peaceful song. Nice for chilling out. #13 8/10 Corrupt - It fits really well as the ending song. Nice ending to an overall good album. I'm satisfied enough! :) ALBUM REVIEW: These ratings gives the album a rating of 7.4/10. The album is put together in a nice way, but there could have been so much more here. However still a really really good alternative electro DM album! There are downpoints, but nothing really bad here. The highlight is 80s'synths 'Peace', but 'In Chains', 'Hole To Feed, 'In Sympathy', 'Come Back', 'Perfect' and 'Corrupt' are all really good tracks. 'Spacewalker' is also a funny exciting short inclusion. Btw, plus for a great minimalistic and not fancy cover. CONCLUSION: I'll rate this album overall: 7.7/10
