About Album

Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, and the final album he completed before his death. It was recorded from 1998 to 2000 at numerous studios and released on April 18, 2000 through DreamWorks Records. Preceded by the singles Happiness and Son of Sam, Figure 8 was Smith's second release on a major label. Figure 8 was recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles, Capitol Studios in Hollywood and Abbey Road Studios in London. Figure 8 - Elliott Smith. Figure 8 Tracklist. Son of Sam Lyrics. Regarding the albums title, Smith said this in a May 11, 2000 article in Boston Herald: I liked the idea of a self-contained, endless pursuit of perfection. But I have a problem with perfection. Listen free to Elliott Smith Figure 8 Son Of Sam, Somebody That I Used To Know and more. 16 tracks 52:12. Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. Released by DreamWorks Records on April 18, 2000, it became Smith's second release on a major label and the last album he would complete before his death. Album 2000 16 Songs. Here was Smith, on a major label, still writing heartbreaking songs but cleanly produced and aided by a band that sounded steeped in the retro sounds of the Beatles and Zombies. A handful of tracks Somebody That I Used to Know, Everything Reminds Me of Her, Stupidity Tries still sound like vintage Smith, while a few tracks seem to hint at a new chapter to his sonic world &qu. Elliott Smith - In the Lost and Found Honky Bach, The Roost. With a couple of exceptions, the sound of Smith's melancholy has largely shifted from edgy to sighingly graceful, although his lyrics are as dark as ever. His songwriting had clearly advanced since the release of his heralded indie classic, EitherOr, and songs like Bottle Up and Explode, Tomorrow Tomorrow, and Pitseleh featured far more intelligent lyrics and melodies than the songs off its predecessor. Punk fans will be pleased to know that Figure 8 is a bit more raw than XO, though the same production team- Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf- was called in again. The album accomplishes more with less saccharine perfection

Made an impulse buy at my local shop and regret it now. Sounds like sandpaper, especially side D. I am going to try returning it. Fingers crossed.
nailer
The shop accepted the return for store credit, thank goodness.
santa
Easily the worst quality pressing in my collection. I'm astounded this managed to get released to the public at scale. Avoid. I'll be seeking out the less terrible Back to Black 2017 re-release and throwing this in the bin.
Ť.ħ.ê_Ĉ.õ.о.Ł
Since all (most?) of the other pressings of this supposedly sound really bad I have never owned this on vinyl until I picked this version up. It actually sounds really good... No complaints at all from me.
Perius
They set out to create the worst sounding record of all time and by god did they do it. A curse upon mankind. Kudos.
Mogelv
This version sounds superb, more or less as good the original to be honest. The pressing is very clean and the sonics are superb. Avoid the US reissue and go for this one with confidence.
showtime
I've collected for years and have never come across really bad pressings. I've looked through water damaged sleeves, old garage sales, and basement-dwelling records. NEVER have I listened to such a terrible pressing. It actually amazes me how bad this sounds. There's a lot of rough noise during the acoustic parts, and distortion when Elliott sings melodies in those songs. The louder songs are also very distorted.I've never experienced such extremes on a record pressing, and it saddens me that it's on an Elliott record. Wish some factory/company can release a proper pressing. This album, and all Elliott's music, deserves the proper and exceptional treatment. I have no idea why his records are very variable with pressings. Seems counter-intuitive to how his music should be heard.Just knowing that "Happiness" doesn't have "The Gondola Man" on the same side of the record should've deterred me away. Those two songs go back-to-back. If I knew that when purchasing, I would've not bought this record. Wish you could see reviews on your mobile Discogs app, but I have not been able to see that. I don't normally leave reviews, but Elliott's music means a lot to me and I don't want others to purchase this pressing. Regardless, everyone should listen to Elliott's music. It has the emotional depth that is not seen in music then and today.
Ynap
Just want to reiterate that this pressing is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. Unequivocally the worst-sounding record I've ever had the misfortune of hearing. The sound quality is deplorable; there's a ton of distortion; and what's more, my copy had TWO skips in "L.A." (B2), which apparently is a common problem. Can't even bring myself to listen the whole way through because it's torturously terrible. STAY AWAY!!!
Coiril
Garbage pressing, I wish someone with skill would master this and XO
Grinin
One of the worst album pressings I've ever heard...whoever mastered this thing should be shot. Fantastic album but avoid this unlistenable pressing at all costs!!
Dilmal
Never really checked my copy since i also have the EU UMG & 2 copies of the CD (which is the format this record has been recorded for and that i have mostly played since 2000). I remember it sounded bad like everyone else described, but now i have a brand new and better cartridge, plus corrected my settings on my turntable, i must admit it sounds better than what i remember... It's far from being from the best record in my collection (but ES records always sounds pretty bad to me). I even compared it to the recent UMG (which has its own issues, on top of being also 'digital sounding') and i don't hear much difference...I have a rather good setup, i can be a really snob when it comes to sound quality so, unless my ears are shit, i wonder if Plain hasn't just changed its QC at some point...
Frostdefender
Can't make a sound is one of my favorite songs. I was so disappointed when it sounded terrible like someone was turning up the sound on a radio that couldn't handle it. Should've read reviews on this album before purchasing. Probably will just use it as a placeholder until I can get a better version and then just listen to the album on Spotify.
Ienekan
Should have read this first! I still listen because it's not unlistenable but.... yea super shitty.
Mr.Death
I'm as guilty as the rest- my first copy had distortion all through "Can't Make a Sound;" my second copy came pre-scuffed. No wonder they were clearing it out at a mainstream retail outlet.
Mpapa
is there any issue of this lp that actually doesn't sound awful and distorted?
Kelerana
I think the problem everybody is having with vinyl copies of Elliotts stuff is the fact it was mastered in the cd age and not for vinyl which is a different, additional process that maybe has not or been done properly before pressing
Nuliax
Sounds great! Just note that the cover images aren’t the highest resolution.
Light out of Fildon
This 2000 original issue is just fantastic. The pressing itself is really high quality; very sturdy, heavyweight wax and very clean sound. The mastering is beautiful, too - lots of clarity, lots of definition, a nice balanced soundscape with good bass and good treble... there's really nothing more you could ask for. By all accounts the reissues are patchy at best - this might be pricey but for those who really love the album it's well worth it in my opinion.
lubov
Although it sounds clearly better than the infamous Plain pressing (and the 2017 US version), i've received 2 copies with the same defect on "everything reminds me of her"... an audible click that appear after each spin, even though the record is pristine and has been cleaned. Probably a bad batch...
Eigonn
Wow, everyone is right here. This album sounds absolutely terrible.
Tori Texer
This EU version sounds so good don't waste your time with the USA version its worst than Spotify
Gralmeena
listened to this. then cleaned the needle. still sounded very bad. now i found this comments here and know it's the pressing. might sound ok on a cheap stereo but not on better equipment. which pressing is better?
Phalaken
Noisy as hell. I wonder if all the ones Bong Load mysteriously had back up for sale after being unavailable for a while were ones people sent back.
Gna
How'd it sound? They still have this pressing on their site.
Yellow Judge
I sure hope not. I think the new reissues have different colors. I just ordered mine, and they were not cheap. I really hope I am happy with my Figure 8.
Goltizuru
Piling on here - this is a super bad pressing of this album. A lot of distortion.
Fordrekelv
This is easily the most disappointing sounding album I've heard. What a disgrace. Avoid this pressing at all costs, don't make the same mistake I did.
Ucantia
I have the BongLoad48 Limited coke bottle swirl colored vinyl and I love it. I just played it all the way through on my 4 speaker component stereo set up and it's just lovely sounding. Plus I just got a new needle so that even helped matters. I used to have the 1st BL pressing of XO and I've always been impressed with how BL's records sound. Apparently Geffen's been repressing Figure 8 also and it doesn't sound too nice. That's a shame.
OTANO
Worst sounding album I've ever heard. A disgrace to an amazing album.
Sinredeemer
Absolute trash pressing. Sounds terrible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Don't make the same mistake I and many others here did.
Kann
Sounds horrible, I didn't see these reviews until after I bought it. I thought maybe mine was an exception but it seems like that isn't the case.
Helo
Someone heard that 2017 Back to Black double Lp ? Thanks.
anonymous
Picked up a copy today. I haven't heard the other issues, but this version sounds clear, precise and warm to me!
Delaath
this was also issued in a jewel case on the same day with the same cat no and barcode.
Ese
Sounds horrible, really distorted and bad quality. Avoid! Piece of garbage.
spark
I came here looking for this - I can't believe how badly it's recorded. I spent a long time agonizing over proper cartridge orientation above and beyond the usual trying to get this to sound ok, but the last couple of songs on the records are UNBELIEVABLY distorted!
Yla
bought it 3 years ago. I don't have a bong load copy to compare but this is a great release with great sound quality. Way better than plain release
Munimand
How do you tell the difference between the LE and standard copies without opening?
Kit
My LE one has a sticker on top of the actual barcode that shows 602557310832 on it. Underneath that number it has B0026144-01- and I bought it directly from the label's website.
Nightscar
Anyone know how this version sounds compared to the Bong Load single coloured vinyl from last year?
Maveri
Guys, how can I return it to the company? I'm quite disappointed by the overall sound of this matrix, as it's one of my most beloved albums ever.
Negal
ddi you ever try this? i would return it for sure
Uaha
Do not buy it. The sound quality is compromised. Saturated low frequencies and background noise. Unbelievable that Universal Music used Plain's matrix.
Zovaithug
I just brought my copy home. Don't bother with it. It's on two lps so I hoped that it would not sound as bad as everybody is saying, but it does. Wow, what a bummer.
Reemiel
The quality of the cover/sleeve art alone is vastly inferior to the Bong Load reissue. I compared them side by side and it's night & day. Wish I'd known ahead of time of the connection to the the Plain mastering - this will stay unopened and promptly be returned to UMe. Very disappointing.
Usaxma
This is a complete disgrace....looks like i get to do some returning next week.
Jube
How did you manage to return it to the company?
Charyoll
Friday 6th April 2017:PLEEZE - what's the scoop - - - what's the mastering for these 2017 reissues of Figure 8 and XO? An SH forumster is absolutely positive that the deadwax on his just purchased 2017 XO indicates the dreaded Plain Recordings matrices. So apparently Universal just used Plain's 2008 metal plates to hack these out - ugh! If you have contradictory info, please post it.
Mataxe
Thanks for the heads up. It'd be nice to have a good 2x LP version, but the Bong Load reissue from last year sounds just fine and can still be had a a reasonable price.
Shistus
Unfortunately, this mastering is exactly as the same as the Plain Recordings. They used the same plates, and have 'PLAIN 127' in the matrix.Incredibly disappointing. I hope this gets properly reissued someday.
Auridora
My copy was pretty noisey, anyone else have this issue?
Burking
I just returned the Geffen pressing i got the other day, it was terrible, straight up dirty paper shards all over both of the Lps ( i cleaned the Lps b4 playing them) and all the way thru there was a ton of audible distortion/fuzziness, what a shame, should have ordered the Bongload version instead..YMMV but i'd def avoid this. I had a similar exp with the 4MWB pressing of Anne Briggs first LP, same crappy distortion over the whole LP.
Ddilonyne
I've owned two other versions - the red and blue plain edition and the back to black repress - and this is easily best of the three, despite the slight surface noise. Also the artwork is loads sharper - I guess all reissues have relied on scans of the original up to now, but the difference is night and day - compare the back covers. You can't even tell Elliott's wearing an earring on the plain and geffen reissues!
Shou
i compared as well with the UK 2LP and the images on the jacket are significantly clearer. I would differ with you in the sound category. Sonically, i feel they sound fairly similar with a slight edge to the double LP. Maybe just because they didn't cram all those grooves on one record...who knows. Plus the surface noise is a bit louder than I prefer but I'm sure I will go through a few of these until I am happy lol.
Shadowredeemer
This sounds great! A tad noisy at parts, but overall for a colored 1LP for an album this long, it sounds pretty awesome.
Darksinger
Agreed! I had to send my copy back to BongLoad (mine was pressed pretty off center and the whole LP had a warble) They replaced my XO as well (bad fill errors side one). They were super cool about it, claiming the marble wax cools at different rates causing more fill errors than expected..
Anayajurus
This sounds like garbage!! I returned the first copy I bought thinking it was just a bad record. They played it on a shitty portable record player in the store and it sounded fine. Wtf? After much hesitation they gave me another copy and I'm playing it now and sounds like absolute shit! I thought my speakers were blown out.
DABY
My copy is just a single LP, not a double. I don't think they offered a double.
Detenta
Sounds great. Best master of this record i've heard. I also have the Back to Black re-issue double LP and the orig Bongload double and this kills both..
Anen
Only available as a single LP. Any comments on the sound?
Arar
Same here. There was not a double LP of this version as far as I have been able to tell.
Tcaruieb
Sounds great, but my sealed copy had a handful of pressing defects - lumps/scrapes in the vinyl - on both discs, which caused a few pops. Nothing major but I'm curious as to whether others' copies are defective too.
Mavivasa
Beware this CRAP reissue pressing.Distorted overdriven mastering. Compressed CD even sounds better! So bad. old mine for cheap as quick as I could.Just got a copy of Back To Black reissue from EU which is great.
Jark
Boycott Plain Recordings. They press from bad digital sources purely for profit because they have the money to do this. It IS the negative side of this reawakening of vinyl consumerism.Sell of your plain recordings to people who don't have a good stereo or want such and such album on vinyl. When A/B, streaming sources sound just as good. It's junk stuff.
Celen
I'm having the same complaint for one I bought in 2015! And, this is the second one from two different pressings (one from a few years back was also noisy and crowded) ...I suggest taking away their (City Hall Records) Crosley's.
Beazezius
Hmm, this pressing sounds pretty great to me, I don't understand what's with all the bad reviews. Maybe there were some defective copies floating around out there once upon a time.
Dozilkree
What are you listening to this on? Also have you listened and compared to a better quality pressing?
THOMAS
It is true, this pressing happens to sound EXTREMELY bad. Sad to hear such an amazing record get this type of mastering for vinyl. Keeping my eye out for a better pressing!
Brazil
Hey, try the Back to Black reissue. Sounds pretty good to me, i think you will be far happier with this than the Plain Recordings reissue...
Bine
Very good pressing, highly reccomended
Damand
Got a pressing of this copy but copyright 2012, it sounds pretty good to me so maybe they fixed it? My records all have the same identifiers on the vinyl as listed above
Sharpbringer
Another awful pressing from Plain. Muddy and compressed sound, which is again true to form for a Plain reissue. Only notable for the slick colored vinyl, which admittedly is very nicely done.
Mamuro
Bought a copy at a record store in Austin without reading the reviews first. My copy from Plain Recordings sounds like crap. I contacted Plain Recordings (really City Hall Records) who said they had never heard this complaint and "as a matter of fact, we're listening to it in the office right now and people are impressed with how good it sounds..." Sent them copious amounts of quotes from the internet regarding Plain Recording's pressing of Figure 8 and they responded, "Well, your search is biased because you put 'Elliott Smith Figure 8 DEFECTIVE' in the search engine..." After bickering and recording a sample of Can't Make a Sound to show them how muff-garbled this pressing was, they agreed to send me a replacement copy. Even said they had an employee give it a listen to check for quality... Specifically Can't Make a SoundWell, I don't know which deaf employee they hired, but this thing still sounds like crap! Even Can't Make a Sound! AVOID.
Hatе&love
Picked this up today only to come here and read the bad comments. I immediately put it on and listened with worried ears... but it was all for not. I must have gotten lucky because my copy sounds fine. Nice and clear with no pops or hissing and the mix sounds good to me. Update: Upon a closer listen on better speakers, everyone else is right, this sounds like shit.
DEAD-SHOT
Upon a closer listen on better speakers, everyone else is right, this sounds like shit.
Malara
Outstanding pressing! Avoid all the Plain reissues, just sayin'
Hap
my copy also sounds like complete garbage, some tracks sounding like they didn't even apply the RIAA curve. shit pressing, extremely frustrating given the wonderful sound this album usually offers.
Kikora
my copy sounds quite alright. but my 2008 reissue of X/O sounds horrible. the brights are too harsh and the whole mix is thin. like you said "practically unlistenable"!
GEL
Got the same problem. Horrible sound all over the vinyls and skipping. Figure 8 is the most hi-fi Elliott Smith recording , didn't deserve that treatment really.
Tamesya
Terrible pressing from Plain Recordings. Skips on Tracks B1 and B2, and every other song has horrible sibilance and hissing on the treble sounds. An amazing album made practically unlistenable thanks to the shoddy physical medium.
JUST DO IT
Please ignore, already got my answer.
Fordrelis
I think, this album is a turning point in Elliott's works. The whole atmosphere changes right from here: depressiveness and gloominess dissolve, making way for feeling of freedom and happiness. This album gives a "second wind", a breath of fresh after sitting in stuffy room. The songs i can mark out as the best one's are: "Son Of Sam", "Somebody That I Used To Know", "L. A.", "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud" and "Can't Make A Sound". Listenning to the album is recommended. =)
