Recorded in the early months of 1970, King Crimsons sophomore effort, In the Wake of Poseidon saw a dramatic change in the bands lineup but still bore many similarities to In the Court of the Crimson King. Still led by guitarist Robert Fripp, he not only performs on his main instrument but also on the Mellotron and the celesta. Like their preceding material, the eight-track album does exemplify the versatility of the group and the genre they are commonly categorized into. The musicians that spent time performing with King Crimson during the period that produced, among other recordings, the groups 1970 album In The Wake of Poseidon pull fewer punches. King Crimson In The Wake Of Poseidon 1970. The first side of Poseidon plays out like a condensed version of King Crimsons debut. King Crimson opened 1970 scarcely in existence as a band, having lost two key members Ian McDonald and Michael Giles , with a third Greg Lake about to leave. Their second album - largely composed of Robert Fripp 's songwriting and material salvaged from their stage repertory Pictures of a City and The Devil's Triangle - is actually better produced and better sounding than their first. Greg Lake was the next member to leave, departing in early 1970 after being approached by Keith Emerson to join what would become Emerson, Lake & Palmer. This left Fripp as the only remaining musician in the band, taking on part of the keyboard-playing role in addition to guitar. To compensate, Sinfield increased his own creative role and began developing his interest in synthesisers for use on subsequent records. Lake agreed to sing on the recordings for In the Wake of Poseidon n. After the departure of three founding members, Robert Fripp and Peter Sinfield assumed expanded roles for In the Wake of Poseidon. In the snarling proto-punk assault of “Pictures of a City,” King Crimson foreshadows grunge, but they are quick to balance the mood with “Cadence and Cascade,” a sliver acoustic folk as seamless as a glass vase. “The Devil’s Triangle” is the album’s intricate centerpiece. Listeners who venture through its cloudbank of mellotron and strings are rewarded with a finale of eruptive psychedelia.

Why its Reissue? Its same yearIt just another factory press

My matrix doesn't match exactly but the 75 Rockefeller address on the label narrows it down.

My copy has no HUB in the runout and has a gold sticker on the shrink: HALF SPEED MASTEREDEDITIONS EGCOLLECTOR'S EDITION

Listed as "Scandinavia", but this is a Norwegian issue (exported to the Scandinavian countries)!

Here's another version: In The Wake of Poseidon, UK and Europe
anonymous
Someone could be give us some information about the pressing quality of this release please ?Thanks !
Xtintisha
To me it sounds digital and lifeless in comparison to an early seventies release.
Zeus Wooden
It's just like the other one with a texturized cover (In The Wake of Poseidon). You can find the US version of this one, and the other UK release with texturized cover.
Shalizel
it's a great edition, the best since the original, like all albums from this series.
Tamesya
there is a version of this album that says it's made in England, but is not a textured cover and does not come with a digital download card (and sticker does not mention it). I believe it's sold only in the U.S., Amazon is selling it as if it were the textured version w/ download. :(

WARNING: for who has the one without the textured sleeve, and it's an european one, here's it: In The Wake Of Poseidon
Ventelone
Is this really a textured sleeve ?? I wonder if there were some left over from Island days as the Island textured covers do not have cat # on back ?! Hard to believe that Polydor make a textured cover ! Our copy with 2302058 A1/B1 matrices but NO ILPS #s is a smooth card sleeve.

Ugh, I seem to have terrible luck with these King Crimson reissues. My copy just arrived, removing the shrink and taking the record out to find that the first track on side one has an abundance of scratches. I’ve had new records with defects like this and they appeared to potentially only be surface marks that I might not hear. Sadly this is not the case. There’s a continuous repetitive click during a large portion of track one. I have other noise issues on my In The Court of King Crimson as well. King Crimson demands to be heard with quiet backgrounds, their music often plays on jumping from loud explosions of sound to soft passages or even moments of complete silence. I’m afraid I will now have to eventually seek out new copies of both of these records in hopes that I can get a decent one. For the record these sound great, that’s not the issue. But just be prepared on all of these reissues that the quality control just isn’t there and you might have to buy a few copies. I will be ordering from amazon from now on so I can return them if they’re messed up. One more gripe here, this is bigger than just this reissue series though...STOP PUTTING 200 GRAM RECORDS IN SHITTY, THIN, FLIMSY ASS SLEEVES. THEY BUST THROUGH THE INNER AND OUTSR SLEEVE DURING SHIPPING AND RUIN THE SLEEVES! Virtually every 200 gram pressing I’ve ever received in the mail has been this way. It’s beyond frustrating and in this case I do believe that could have been what put the scratches on my copy of In The Wake Of Poseidon; the record itself busting the seems and shifting around so much during shipping can’t be good for the record. Anyways I do love the sound on these, I could care less if they’re from digital sources as the drums here sound more 3D and alive than some AAA releases I’ve heard. 100% recommend the sound but buy this somewhere you can get a replacement if need be

I was just wondering whether this edition came with some sort of generic company inner sleeve or it was released with a plain white with no distinct features? Some sellers refer to inner sleeve, but no Picture or description in the notes about OIS on this release page?
Fordredor
I know this is a late reply but I wanted to mention that I have this pressing and mine came with the poly-lined white sleeve with the blue lettering at the bottom and the cut-outs for the labels that says "Plastic bags can be dangerous" on it. I didn't buy this new but based on the discoloration and ageing of the sleeve I would say it's original.

My vinyl sounds amazing, very dynamic and clear. I was blown away. If you don't have the original, get this one!

I don’t know the date of this pressing, but i’m sure i bought it not after 1976-1977.Good recording, but not amazing. I like it, but loose vs. In the court

I'd like to follow up on a comment made by the previous reviewer with regard to Haskell's vocals on "Cadence and Cascade." I'm not sure wobbly is the right adjective to describe the vocal performance; it is understated, and therefore perfectly suited to the mellow tone of the song. I find the vocals to be fine on this track and disagree that this song represents a weak aspect of the album in any way. "Cadence and Cascade" is a high point for me due to the excellent drumming and enticing flute solo. This song also sounds remarkable through headphones. I agree with the previous reviewer in all other respects, just thought I would share an alternative perspective regarding "Cadence and Cascade."

Sounds good, though my copy is a little noisy. Mine came in a gatefold that is textured and appears to be printed in the UK, does not have the yellow box or any other exterior writing, apart from "KING CRIMSON IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON ILPS 9127" along the spine.
Winasana
I have that one but with a sticker on the case saying "definitive edition - re mastered by robert Fripp and Tony Arnold" Aren't all the EGCD2 editions made from the same master record remastered by Fripp and Arnold (in 1989 I belive) and shouldn't therefore all of them have RM tag?
Marige
WARNING: THERE ARE TWO VERSIONS OF THIS RECORD. The U.S. Version DOES NOT have the textured cover or the original vinyl transfer card.

Mine says it's made in England, but the sleeve is NOT textured and it does NOT have a download card. Moreover, the sticker doesn't say so. Though the barcode is 633367910219 and cat№ KCLP2. I wonder what my version really is

As with first four KC releases by Atlantic, this one varies tangibly from the UK original in terms of sound. You can definitely hear compression which spoils the hyper-dynamics of KC music. The mids and the super-highs are reduced which makes the sound even more aggressive and somewhat lacking in warmth. The packaging is tight thick cardboard, which is great, albeit it's not textured. All in all, a good version for anyone not ready to spend crazy money on the UK original.

Nostalgia! I had this one - living in Ukraine in 1993, that was the only way for a poor schoolboy to get a King Crimson record ) The LP-master was cut from the Definitive Edition CD (they couldn't possibly have had an access to any master tape) and, needless to say, the sound wasn't right EQ-wise, it was thin. But for that very reason (CD-origins) it had better dynamics than any Atlantic release. The cover was made of thin cardboard (or thick paper if you like) - no lamination, no texture, just the cheapest cover material the label (AnTrop aka Santa) could get. No gatefold. Green label. Way better than nothing. Arguably the worst packaging a KC album has ever received, and for that alone a curious collector's item.

This, as well as the other existing albums in this series, seems to be the best King Crimson reissue so far in terms of both sound and packaging. The only serious difference sound-wise is the added highs, but it's done with good measure (unlike, say, the German Stateside press) and adds up to the listening pleasure. So here we are with the most true-to-the-original reissue at 1/10th of the original's price. Well done DGM - thumbs up!
Damand
Compared to the original English pink label press, this German Stateside version is quite trebly, but dynamics are on par with the original (unlike the US first edition which was both compressed and EQ'd to death). The gatefold sleeve is not textured but laminated.

The band already went through lineup changes, as Ian McDonald left, leaving wind instruments to Mel Collins (previous of the band Circus, the band that recorded for Transatlantic, that is, and later all over the place including Camel, The Alan Parsons Project, Clannad, etc.). Mellotron duty now left up to Robert Fripp. Even Greg Lake didn't want to continue on, he simply laid the vocal tracks and left the bass up to Michael Giles brother Peter. Gordon Haskell was brought in for one vocal track, and Keith Tippett for piano.Popular opinion is this is a pale rehash of their debut and nothing more. Did they listen to the second half? I mean the quirky "Cat Food", complete with tinkling piano from Keith Tippett would have been out of the question on their debut, and the Mellotron heavy "Devil's Triangle", partially borrowed from Holst's The Planets, which really gets off the deep-end. I remembered back in 1991 when I bought this tripping out as a 19 year old, and glad to start hearing Mellotron on something other than a Moody Blues album. I do have to admit the first half are more in line of their debut. "Pictures of a City" is a horn-dominated piece not unlike "21st Century Schizoid Man", "Cadence and Cascade" with Gordon Haskell on vocals, is more mellow, on the lines of "I Talk to the Wind", and the title track is a Mellotron-laden epic like "Epitaph". It might not be as strong as their debut, but still a worthy followup.
Moonworm
How to move on without Lake and McDonald, who both had a representative role in the sound of the debut LP? And how to follow up a record like the previous one musically? The answer is thought by many not to be wholly satisfactory, as this here album is often seen as a weak brother of the first. Fripp now plays the characteristic mellotron himself (without any discernable difficulty) and Collins is the new woodwinds miracle, not less enticing than McDonald was. The weak point must be the vocals. Haskell's voice is severely limited and does not always credit to the emotions that he is asked to express. It may be true, that no real new points of view are presented within this album, but they are definitely further developed to at times majestic results. The fragile start of ''Peace - a beginning'' contrasts again heavily with ''Pictures of a city'', where the menace now has become apocalyptic. The middle piece of that track is so transparant, that it is hardly music anymore: ethereal webs of sound that drift along. There are more complicated means necessary to achieve this ever expanding contrast. More asymmetrical time-signatures, more measure-changes, more complicated riffs, often played unisono to reinforce them. The tranquil ''Cadence & cascade'' shows the disadvantages of Haskell's wobbly voice very clearly. The overwhelming title track pulls all stops. Fripps solo on acoustic guitar is immediately recognizable and mellotron waves hurl their depths over your head as if they want to drown you. Maybe the lyrics are a shade too mystical for their own good. Side B starts off with the almost accessible ''Cat food'', a bitter observation of consumer's paradise, adorned with the freakiest grand piano imaginable. Never need to worry/ With a tin of Hurri Curri, no indeed. The strongest track must be the three-part suite that follows, an exalted mixture of heavy rock, free-jazz and 20th century chamber-music with an exceptionally calamitous atmosphere. This track seems quite unsuitable to hear just before falling asleep. Cataclysmic shreds of music, sharp and incisive industrial soundscapes, shrieking dissonants, uncanny instrumental combinations and small morsels of innocent music that perish in the violence, these are hard ingredients to digest, but simultaneously very adventurous and uncommon listening. This is music that suggests the very end of times in a credible way, much like some episodes in the symphonies of Arthur Honegger do. More difficult to get acquainted with than the first album, nevertheless an excellent effort in its own right.
