In The Lab was initially released in 1992 and remains the duo's standout release: a peerless collection of addictively loved-up and dreamy deep house cuts that sound like they were made in Rimini or New Jersey, rather than the West Country. We're particularly enjoying the glassy-eyed wonder that is Tranquility Bass and breakbeat-driven shuffler Breakdown Wo, though all four tracks - freshly re-mastered for this reissue from the original DATs - are simply superb. An extended play record, often referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. Contemporary EPs generally contain a minimum of three tracks and maximum of six tracks, and are considered less expensive and time-consuming for an artist to produce than an album. An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play SP and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads

Hi guys, Sam from Few & Far Between here. Please don't pay over the odds for a copy of the repress! I originally pressed up 500 but as the demand for this release has gone crazy I am pressing up 2000 in total. 1000 have already been pressed up and sold but there is another 1000 to come so please just be patient as I don't want to feed the Discogs sharks and want to make sure everyone gets a copy. Thanks for your support!
Pedora
great note and approach Sam. It's great to see people pressing numbers of copies to keep people happy and stop inflating prices for people who want to buy good music. That said I do get a bit tired of people complaining about 'sharks' on Discogs all the time. People pay over the odds for records they want when they are rare and good. It's just normal and the related fees also keep Discogs alive. I sometimes sell records at his prices, but I buy them as well. Not a problem for me and Discogs allows me to trim my collection and sell some off to help feed my habit financially....

From the liner notes of the aforementioned "Out Of The Blue" compilation by Phil Mison (written by Language's Alex Swift regarding 'Tranquility Bass')~Recorded in Bristol, UK in 1991, this track was an expression of our love for the music coming out of New York at that time, from labels like Nervous and Strictly Rhythm. We had been obsessively collecting second-hand Roland gear for a year or so, and had finally found a TR 909 - the jewel in the crown. When we got into the studio with it, these are the patterns that we made. It was all about the Shuffle control for that swing, and hearing beats like that coming from our own rig was a real hallelujah moment. I think we just laughed, which is always a good sign.

serious memories of hearing this back in the day

Dawwwwg, this release is damn hot... Most tracks got that early 90s touch you can feel in many Italian releases around that time. Tranquility bass is, imho, "da gem" on this EP, with that little acid twist, it's clearly a killer tune. I feel bad that, as of today, nobody uploaded Crystal Clean, which is a beautiful track. One day, if I'm not that lazy, I'll try to rip it... Don't sleep on that vinyl if you can cope it for a fair price.

For me this one’s a bit of a secret weapon. I was delighted to discover this record emerged from Bristol, from the crew out of Replay Records (sadly closed in 2006) who started up a short-lived label named Earth Recordings. While the vast majority of records issued on the label offered a Bristolian twist on UK hardcore and techno, the plate in question is quite the anomaly; rather than the aggressive, propulsive energy of much early hardcore, the four tracks function as an incredible excursion into deep house. There’s much to be said about the geographical influence of Bristol on it’s music: whilst not overbearing on this record, there are definitely hints of the brooding, sometimes melancholy sounds synonymous with releases emerging from the city. The record isn’t only a a strange blip on Earth - it’s a rather unusual effort in the scheme of the repertoire of the producers behind this record. The cuts here betray a producer well versed in the house genre. Breakdown Wo! is a track I feel stands out on this 12″; the influence of American house music here is very prevalent with a pumping, fat kicks and bassline reminiscent of New York while also straddling the sounds of Chicago with a subtle 303 line extending itself through the mix. Elsewhere Crystal Clean centres itself on a languid breakbeats and bongos - in a contrast to the A1, you could say this track wears it’s Bristolian, hardcore influences on it’s sleeve; you can almost hear echoes of this track on the new Acting Press record - that breakbeat infusion with meditative, brooding ambience.Opening the second side is Tranquility Bass. Quite easily, this track wins much praise from myself for the indulgent, wide-open pads and beautiful piano lines - really, it’s a life-affirming track; melancholic, exploratory and dark this is the cut that convinced me to buy the record - super brooding and out of this world. The closing cut of this 12″ again shows us how versed the producers were, executing more original ideas. Lake Placid is all about skippy drums and hats bouncing around the mix - it’s sounds off but it works, with an array of pianos, synths and FX revolving around that central structure of percussion. Of all the tracks on the record, this one feels rather current; there’s definitely an outsider sort of vibe to it, almost like the drum machine has been programmed by someone still learning. I suppose that’s the trick when you try making new things - coming up with something original and interesting, maybe not done before - and executing it really well. You could describe the ideas on this record like that. I like it.
Mysterious Wrench
Another little known gem with four very strong tracks that would do no deep house set a dis-service. An untypical release for the label it seems that mainly put out Hardcore. The influence of the contemporary sound of US deep house is well in evidence with some familiar samples and keyboard sounds but this release is no less original for it; indeed the high standard of all four tracks could be seen as a lesson in originality with basic resources. I only suddenly recently remembered the "Breakdown Wo!" track and realised that this was a record that I needed to re-purchase urgently to replace my original lost to water damage, and I was pleasantly surprised by all the other tracks. Go seek!
