About Album

My Bloody Valentine. Isn't Anything. Isn't Anything is the debut studio album by English-Irish rock band My Bloody Valentine, released on 21 November 1988 by Creation Records. Its innovative guitar and production techniques consolidated the experimentation of the band's preceding EPs, and would make it a pioneering work of the subgenre known as shoegazing. Isn't Anything is the debut full-length studio album by My Bloody Valentine, released in November 1988 on Creation Records. After the band's original vocalist Dave Conway left in 1987, to be replaced by Bilinda Butcher, the band continued for a while in their previous noisy indie-pop style before Kevin Shields returned to their avant-garde roots, and began to explore the possibilities offered by the studio facilities available after signing to Creation Records in 1988. The first fruits of this experimentation was the singleEP You Made Me Realise, released in July 1988, w. Songs in album My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything 1988. Album 1988 12 Songs. Isnt Anythings unstable combination of gentle and ferocious elements is the key to this innovation. Even on songs as assaultive as Feed Me with Your Kiss or the Sonic Youth-worthy Sueisfine, the bands knack for psych-pop melodies, along with Bilinda Butcher and Kevin Shields blissed-out vocals, is somehow strong enough to weather Shields constantly surging maelstrom of reverb, effects, and feedback. Isn't Anything captures My Bloody Valentine's revolutionary style in its infancy and points the way to Loveless, but it's far more than just a dress rehearsal for the band's moment of Bloody Valentine's output during the band's miracle years between 1988 and 1991 still feels like a gift. In addition to new masters of Isn't Anything and Loveless, there's also a new My Bloody Valentine release, of a sort. EPs 1988-1991 collects four EPs and a single issued during the bands creative peak, along with previously unreleased but widely bootlegged tracks. This release provides the greatest revelation. Though much of the album is laced with traces of their indie-pop roots, the experimental side of Shields and company is evident. Also traces of the feedback noise of the Jesus & Mary Chain with the dream pop elements of the Cocteau Twins and the ambient musical landscapes by Brian Eno lace the album

Music video by Machine Gun Kelly performing Bloody Valentine. My Bloody Valentine are a rock band formed in Dublin in 1983. Since 1987, its lineup has consisted of founding members Kevin Shields vocals, guitar, sampler and Colm Ó Cíosóig drums, sampler, with Bilinda Butcher vocals, guitar and Debbie Googe bass. Their music is best known for its merging of dissonant guitar textures, ethereal melody, and unorthodox production techniques. They helped to pioneer the alternative rock subgenre known as shoegazing during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Listen to music from My Bloody Valentine like Only Shallow, When You Sleep & more. Though My Bloody Valentine rejected rock & roll conventions, they didn't subscribe to the precious tendencies of anti-rock art-pop bands. Instead, they rode crashing waves of white noise to unpredictable conclusions, particularly since their noise wasn't paralyzing like the typical avant-garde noise rock band: it was translucent, glimmering, and beautiful. Shields was a perfectionist, especially when it came to recording, as much of My Bloody Valentine's sound was conceived within the studio itself. As shoegazing reached its peak in 1991, My Bloody Valentine released Loveless, which broke new sonic ground and was hailed as a masterpiece. My Bloody Valentine. I remember buying Isn't Anything from Our Price. The copy they gave me didn't have the 7" but it had the black label. The sound of the pressing was terrible so I took it back and they gave me another copy with the brown label. This sounded much better. I've always wondered if this was random or different quality pressings.
Bukus
This record is brilliant and this pressing is beautiful. No noise on mine, other than then intended noises ;)

I can't believe this edition is going to end up being the rarest one since is it's not only the first pressing of the reissue, but it's the only edition that will ever have the "original reissue cut", since apparently the new issues of the reissue come with the Sean Magee cut. I'm glad I got this one right off the bat.

... and sold out too at mbv store! /

Pretty terrible sound, when looking at songs with a spectrogram the frequencies appear to be cut, like it was mastered from MP3s or something, but no it's this very 1996 reissue I own. Avoid.
Gavigamand
Just got this reissue and A/B'd it against my NM original. Have to say I can't hear any substantial differences in mixing or mastering. It sounds excellent. Recommended!

I picked this copy up in New York this week complete with incorrect labels. Sound is great... although, as it's MBV, who can tell if it's a bit distorted!? ;-)
Tygralbine
just listened this after ordering direct from mbv records.. shocked at amount of surface noise. same with loveless. tried cleaning but noise persisted. have contacted them and awaiting response.
Whitescar
I have this copy. It sounds great, no complaints from me.

The new pressing by Shields cannot arrive in the mail fast enough. This was purchased along with "Loveless" around 2007, and I've never been very satisfied with either album's sound quality. It's way too loud and therefore clips most of the time. Every song has occasional pops + crackles. The lows and highs feel artificially boosted, although this was apparently transferred from CD. Every criticism applies to "Loveless" as well. By far not the worst records I own, but I've rarely genuinely enjoyed listening to these over the years and will be glad to swap them out for the newer, more official pressings.
blodrayne
OK, who bought this for USD 242.63?? Does it sound better when you pay 10x the actual price? smh...

baelfire12 The first ones who ordered both the Isn't Anything and Loveless records, received (after a very very very very long wait I have to say) another record of the Isn't Anything release. This was a discarded release, the band essentially was throwing away. As with all "limited" items of this world, this copy became rare and commanded excess fees. To get it you had to have ordered online via MBV webpage and BOTH records. you didn't have to buy both. I only ordered Isn't Anything and received the extra lp

Someone commented this in a reply but just so that everyone sees it:Apparently this pressing, the "2nd batch", uses Sean Magee's master, previously only available on the alternative test cut version (My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything)Which makes no sense but it's My Bloody Valentine.
Wal
They have different inscriptions so for whatever that signfies they're not identical cuts. Basically there are now three cuts in circulation, two of which are 'official' and two of which are known to be by Magee, and neither of those groups fully overlap. THAT'S MBV, BABY!
Ximinon
Great album but it was filthy, as others have said if you don't give it a thorough clean then you will get pops and crackles galore.

I'm also going to chime in and say my copy is really great. I clean every record I get (new or used) with a Squeaky Clean RCM using The Disc Doctor's Quick Wash Record Cleaner. A dirty record is always going to sound noisy.Overall very clean and sounds great. Getting a bit of noise near the beginning of "Nothing Much to Lose," but nothing that would turn me off from the pressing. Aside from the record itself, the album jacket is top notch. I always appreciate a good tip-on jacket, and glossy is always nice to see!Haven't listened to the bonus record yet, but I'm excited to compare the two.

do flippers not understand you can buy this from the band's website still?

My copy isn't a white label. It's a slightly lighter brown label than the official release. The only etching is "MBV02-A-1" on side one and "MBV02-B-1" and it is dated copyright 2016 whereas on the official release is the etching "MOV02-17-A-1" and "BH 82121-01 A" on side one and "MBV02-17-B-1" and "BH 82121-01 B" on side two and it is dated 2017.

Received my copy today. Cleaned it on the VPI with Disc Doctor cleaning fluid, followed by a double rinse of DISTILLED water. Quiet as can be and not a hint of surface noise. For new collectors, or for those who simply aren't aware, you should always clean your vinyl before playing. Even brand new vinyl. There is a mold release compound on every new record that can both cause extraneous noise and buildup on your stylus. Always clean and double rinse, using distilled water - not tap water, which includes minerals and impurities that can have a negative impact on your records.
Berkohi
For people complaining about this being a noisy pressing I suggest cleaning your discs before listening. This is a great pressing, very quiet and with much better sound than the original. Some songs had a very Lo-fi quality in all previous pressings and are significantly improved in this reissue with much more depth, low end and dynamics. Also Bilinda's vocals sound stunning. The original creation vinyl was very good but this is so much better. The improvements in songs like "When you wake", "FMWYK" and "Several girls galore" are impressive. The most ethereal songs ("No More Sorry", "All I Need") also sound very pleasing. The alternative cut is also really good but not significantly better. People rated it as better since this one tended to sound noisy, which is absolutely solved with a good cleaning.
Nawenadet
It's my understanding that they may have pressed at multiple plants in England, France, & Germany, with the hopes of finding the best sound. I wonder if all these free extra copies have the same runout #'s and etchings.
Pryl
Here's a passage detailing elements of an interview with Kevin and Rolling Stone:The final hurtle this time was in physical production. He found that manufacturers each had unique sounds. “If you go to a French manufacturer, it’s gonna come across a lot softer sounding and warmer than if you go to a British manufacturer, where it’s gonna come across a lot more high end,” he says. They eventually settled on a German facility because it was the most accurate. Throughout the process he went through various test pressings and later realized that full runs also sounded different, so they began doing short runs of 100. “We literally have a few thousand records lying around,” he says. “All experiments and failures.”When he was auditioning manufacturers, he found that many seemed not to care about the quality of their product. “When I played the original version from ’91, it sounded more exciting than all these cuts that I was achieving now,” he says. “[The companies] just make vinyl and they take advantage of the fact that 50 percent of people who buy it don’t even listen to it. And the other 50 percent are only getting into it for the first time. So you have a situation where only 25 percent of people can even tell if it’s crap or not.”
Elildelm
Nope....all copies were pressed at Optimal Media in Germany. I think you’re mixed up between pressing and cutting processes. They had Sean Magee at Abbey Road cut the ‘alternate pressings’ but then decided to get Matt Colton at Alchemy to cut them and ultimately they preferred the Alchemy cut.
Nicanagy
I have two copies and they both have the same runout numbers MBV02.A.1 (SIDE A) and MBV02.B.1 ¡...¡ (SIDE B)

Received my bundle with loveless today. Got the free vinyl. Amazing quality for all. Finally this day has come.
I_LOVE_228
I was going to buy this for under $50 from the mbv site, but I see I can purchase this for $100 here on discogs! Yay!
Goltikree
hahahha-perfect (plus nine more additional words that go here)
Djang
I received this alternate version. Mine is a white label though, not a printed label as shown here. Did anyone else get a white label version? Is it worth adding this (images and details) to this release or would it constitute a separate listing?
Kigul
If it's a white label then it's a different release and should be added even if the runouts are the same.
Thomand
Just double checked and as I thought, exactly the same runouts including i...i on b side - that’s why I wasn’t sure if it warranted a separate entry.
Mardin
I'm curious as well, does yours have different info in the runout?
Error parents
Different center label means a new submission on Discogs usually. I think you should submit it to the database. It is very interested to know if it has the same matrix in the runout groove? Thank you!
Burirus
This isn't a rejected test pressing. It's an alternative cut of the album. It was confirmed on their Twitter.
Gholbirius
Finally received my preorders of “Isn’t Anything” and “Loveless”. From the comments, it looks like many have received extremely noisy copies of “Isn’t Anything”. My copy, which I’m listening to as I type this, is noise free. Super quiet pressing and rich, warm sound throughout, and very detailed. I have not cleaned mine yet but will at some point. I suspect a lot of the noise issues people are having, might be due specs of dust from inner sleeve and/or static which of course can be caused by the inner sleeve as well. I also have the 2003 reissue and this latest pressing blows it out of the water. No comparison. .
Tiainar
This 'FREE VINYL' Isn't Anything is the one you want. Upon shipping and opening, the surface of the vinyl was dirty as sin. But once it was cleaned, it played with no flaws! Dunno why this was rejected, other than they may not have been happy overall with the mix????
Windbearer
Anyone else get an extremely noisy pressing? If this is what it actually sounds like, then I think I prefer the 1988 Creation CD

Quote from Uncut magazine March 2018 "We did a years worth of test pressings...we'd do 3 cuts each time as there might be a pop on one. Then instead of doing test pressings, when you get 20 copies, we started doing white label runs. We realised there's no point in judging the quality of the test pressing, It had to be judged by going through the system properly. So we'd do three cuts of the same thing with 100 white labels of each...they're all sitting in a room at the moment in a giant pile. It was a crazy process". He's talking about Loveless there but presume he was as meticulous about both reissues - so no expense spared in terms of getting the pressing as close to how he wanted it. However this isn't a white label so can we presume this is actually a rejected press, possibly a complete run as they have proper labels on, albeit mine is a faded looking light brown colour?
Ynonno
Just received my bundle today on valentine's day :DPS: test pressing included (ordered end of january)
LONUDOG
I also placed the pre-order bundle and still waiting.. would have been something to receive on Valentine's day..
SoSok
Item arrived today! Received the extra vinyl and very pleased with the release :)
Qwert
Are we certain these are limited to those who pre-ordered?
ZEr0
I also ordered both 'Isn't Anything' and 'Loveless' right after these were announced for pre-order. The white label 'Isn't Anything' was included here as well. Totally cool!
Forey
I dont think its a test pressing, it is an alternate cut of the record that was probably pressed at a different plant or with different plates.
Bumand
true, i ordered mine on 2/6 and received it today 3/1 and it was included.
Hasirri
It was included in the first 500 orders, iirc. MBV posted on social media, 2/19/18, that they were out of them now, and that they wouldn't be available again. Any order before 2/19, 2/18, or so, should have it included. I ordered mine on 2/3 and got this one.
lacki
I ordered a couple of weeks ago and got delivery today with a test pressing.
Nalaylewe
I like this "rejected" test pressing a lot more than the official one. While the official Isn't Anything reissue has lots of vinyl noises and inner groove disortion throughout play, the test pressing sounds perfect. Maybe a bit less punchy, but plays so smooth and perfectly - just like loveless. Due to the limited amount of the test pressing this will be the most valuable item of the new reissue series.
Stanober
I agree, this alternate pressing sounds to me more like the master tape might have sounded (if I only knew how that sounds!). It has a more controlled sound with better image placement and sounds cleaner. I am at loss why this wasn't the official version.
Wrathmaster
Same. This is nice and quiet without all of the inner groove distortion. The "official" one gives me a headache just thinking about it
Fesho
The term "test pressing" is misleading, since everybody who ordered the bundle, even recently, got one, They are absolutely not as rare as usual "test pressings". We probably talk about thousands copies.
Arashilkis
Where was the “rejected submission” info found? Does anyone know more about this, what exactly that means, how many were pressed, etc?
Vijora
Although likely, especially with the Sean Magee link, it doesn't explicitely say so. We'll probably never know but I'm curious about more of the details. Did they press x number of them and then decide it wasn't working? Are these those presses?I had already read that article but thanks for the info.

Kevin Shields talks about it in this Pitchfork interview:We worked with the very same people who did the Beatles stuff and used the same equipment they used, but I didn’t really get what I needed from that. The quality of the Beatles stuff was very, very good, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to work for everybody. What makes it really good for some kinds of music makes it not very good for other kinds. This Isn't Anything pressing was cut by Sean Magee who also cut The Beatles In Mono which Kevin is referring to.Hope this helps!
Chinon
Any thoughts on how the test press sounds? Just curious.
Beardana
I enjoy the test pressing much more than the offical one. Test pressing sounds stunning and very clean - no clicks, pops, surface noise whatsoever. Whereeas the offical pressing has some vinyl noises throughout play andugly inner groove distortion on the last track on each side. Really wonder why Kevin Shields preffered the other version. The test pressing is - along with the original Creation LP - my to go pressing from now on.
Zeks Horde
It sounds the same to me, I'm not sure why it was included.

I ordered the bundle October 2017 and received nothing. I did email them to ask why and was told they are still shipping them out. I guess what bothers me most if they didn’t ship them in order starting with the pre orders placed last summer! People who ordered a month ago received their records while many early birds are still waiting
Rko
The date on mine is 6/10/17 (maybe 7/10/17 for you) so you're probably reading the 7 as July when it's really the day, not the month. October 6th is when pre-sale started.
Pipet
jtm1967 I ordered the bundle last July 2017 and received nothing. I did email them to ask why and was told they are still shipping them out. Ok, here's my review. This is brilliant. The seperation is fantastic...I didn't anticipate it. The drums, bass and acoustic guitar parts in particular have a lot more room to breathe and come through more clearly. It's like listening to the album again for the first time and frankly, I never knew Isn't Anything was this good! This is a proper remaster...not just 'let's just compress it and make it louder'...they've actually made this thing sound better, and given it new life. An example to all!
Pameala
I ordered a bundle too. Enjoy...it's definitely worth the wait!
Zodama
Thanks! I ordered a bundle. Still waiting but now I want it even more:)
Akisame
Yeah, I have it. Although I was more struck by the quality of the Isn't Anything remaster/reissue when compared to the original, the Loveless reissue is of the same very high standard. Maybe Loveless was always a little closer to perfection, so the difference was less noticeable, but the Loveless reissue sounds incredible and is noticeably more 'analog'. I would definitely recommend it, even if you have an original vinyl, it is worth your money.
Nilasida
Hi,do you also have "Loveless" reissue and care to share your impression?
FLIDER
I also got sent the 'white' version. I wonder should we create a seperate page for it?
Ť.ħ.ê_Ĉ.õ.о.Ł
I also received the 'FREE VINYL' alternate master in a white sleeve. My copy has some crud on A4 and A5. I haven't cleaned the disc yet, so I'm not sure it's just on the surface or something more serious. Also, the sound quality doesn't seem quite as good as Loveless: background noise between tracks is fairly pronounced. I could be imagining it, but the B side sounds cleaner overall than A. Again, I haven't run it through my cleaner yet, so it might be an issue of surface dust (both my discs had quite a lot of dust and sleeve residue on them).
Gio
I received my loveless/isn’t anything AAA bundle this morning (put in a pre-order for both).I have so far played Isn’t Anything once on my VPI Scout & Nagaoka MP110 cartridge. I can happily confirm that this is everything we all hoped for. The sound is smooth, natural and as appealing as any genuine analogue record in vinyl history. There is great separation in the sound which gives the recording a haunting quality. The sounds themselves seem to leap out of the mix to surprise you and capture your attention. There is a big, dramatic quality to the record - exactly what’s missing in so many modern LPs. I am waiting to open Loveless when I feel the time is right (still sitting here in its shrink) but on the basis of Isn’t Anything, we are truly onto a winner and proves that with care and effort, great records can still be made.
Thetalune
My pre-ordered copy came with a "free vinyl", which is another copy of the album in a plain white sleeve. The label is lighter, and it has a copyright notice of 2016. I'm assuming this is a run of ultimately rejected remasters done a couple of years ago, and they've just thrown it in with pre-orders as a freebie curio. Anyone know for sure?
ALAN
I just got mine today. I did a quick comparison of the first song of the free vinyl vs the official one. I thought the official sounded better. Glad I found this thread and curious to see what else we learn about it.
Sagda
My free vinyl has i...i etched into the dead wax (side 2) - I believe this is a Sean Magee cut from Abbey Road
Swiang
Same here - would like more info! No etching either, very mysterious.
Corgustari
Hoffmanites who've compared the deadwax say it's a different cut. Kevin took the records to several different mastering studios and tried multiple pressing plants before he found the one he was happy with, according to the Rolling Stone article from November there's apparently thousands of "failed experiments" lying around
Went Tyu
I got my ‘free vinyl’ of Isn’t Anything through today. Would love more info on it!
Banal
I only ordered a week or so ago, but I still got the freebie. Important to note to anyone curious—this isn't a white label copy, but comes with a properly printed label, just in a different shade of brown.
Windworker
Did you order the first day? I wasnt able to get my order for a few days laterm so i doubt I'll get one
Konetav
quoted from elsewhere - "the latest issue of Uncut with a big feature of the band. Regarding the white label of Isn't Anything, Kevin said they did hundreds of test pressings of the record, and these are now being given away with some orders."
Liarienen
got the same thing through. not sure either. trying to investigate myself.
mr.Mine
if everything is ok this is the original german edition creation records with the distribution of rough trade. it's still from 1988 so the sound is closer to the original recordings, it is not compressed. it's okay to have it, even with the misprints.
INwhite
To confirm earlier reviews, Labels are misprinted and band name is mispelled on spine. I have listened to this pressing about 10 times and have no real quarrel with the sound quality. 3 stars for flimsy jacket and misprinting.
Samutilar
On my copy the labels aren't on the wrong side. They were just misprinted. Printed on the label for Side one (Side A) are the tracks for Side two (Side B). Vice verse on the other side. Being a bootleg I'm not surprised but really not that bad of a pressing.
Erienan
My copy has a Matrix / Runout that saysCRELP 040 MPO 01 @
Zololmaran
Despite what Kevin Shields says (perhaps the most picky Producer of all time), and some reviewers here, listening to this side-by-side with an original Sire USA pressed 1988 CD copy reveals the vinyl to be a more than adequate performer. It is certainly no worse than the CD and is generally more open and trebly. Very heavy vinyl, and a decent gatefold to enjoy too. For the $25 I paid, it is more than fine until a new re-release comes our way (but you would know better than holding your breath on that one, if you are a long-standing MBV fan!)
Reemiel
https://twitter.com/iiirdsworld/status/759379456385581058 Sean Magee has been cutting Loveless recently and this could VERY WELL be Isn't Anything.
greatest
Mine has CRELP 040 and MPO in the matrix, but it has the newer cover with the Regent address listed on the back for Creation. Does anybody know if they ever repressed these or if perhaps I have a weird copy? This doesn't match any of the other version listings, not even the boots.
Hulore
I believe this is the 1998 reissue with Creations Address at that time.https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/3431394?ev=rb
MilsoN
Previous pictures on this listing were incorrect showing CRE 04A release not CRELP 040. Pics are updated now. Almost positive this 1st Edition has brown LP labels instead of black, and the barcode should be 5 017556 300404 like the Limited 1st Edition with 7". Awaiting other contributions but quite sure this is correct.
GYBYXOH
Mine was also bought new, matches all info on this listing but has black labels.
sunrise bird
My version matches everything on this release page, except it has the black labels, not brown.
Era
You are indeed correct - mine is a brown label one, with the 404 barcode at the end.
Jerdodov
I approve this bootleg. Good sound, quality printed sleeve (minus the typo).
Simple fellow
fresh and clear master recorded. I have many versions of this album and it's all have a little different. check once before buy it. the first without 7' is really clear sound.
Rainshaper
can anybody have this and advice more details of this issue?
Rit
I bought the Plain reissue of this album first, and what a mistake that was. This version or any other original press is what you should spend your money on. It sounds incredible.
Jeyn
someone sell this pleeeeease
Galanjov
i want
Axebourne
i also have it, notice that the name of the band is MISPELLED on the spine of the sleeve (really...) - it says my BLODDY valentine.....
Agamaginn
Mine also has this typo. Typical bootleg stuff.
Akinohn
I have this exactly as described but without sticker
Yggfyn
Found this at my local shop, and couldn't pass it up. Found out afterward that it was a bootleg, but I don't mind. The sound definitely isn't perfect, but I wouldn't call it TERRIBLE. Definitely a secondhand recording through and through. Lives up to the title of "bootleg". With all that said, I'm still glad to have it, and it still sounds good through my speakers without any major flaw, aberration, damage, etc. Good, clean, faithful pressing. I definitely want an original eventually, but, until that time, this will definitely hold me over.
Little Devil
Í saw these german bootlegs(both albums) a vinyl fair here in switzerland last year and once again in a german shop last week. They just look so shaky that I figured out that they were bootlegs. The cardboard quality is just cheap and the quality of the picture is noticeably Xerox. I didn't listened to them but figured out if you're a music lover you shouldn't spend your money on them.
Aver
bad pressing. side a labeled b, and side b is labeled a. the media had lots of fingerprints and stains which couldn't be removed with deep cleaning. the sound is decent but totally compressed, definetely not your option if you are a real audiophile. stick to the original UK pressing for the best sounding experience
terostr
I have just bought this the other day, the labels were imprinted. Side a is labeled side b and side b is labeled side a. I'm surprised at how good this sounds considering that it is probably a bootleg.
Aurizar
thanks a lot for this comment ... very helpful ... do you have any other identifiers, such as the matrix numbers if any ...
Capella
I just got it today. Spine says,"My Bloddy Valentine", haha. Sounds pretty decent to me, but I'd love to A/B it up against an original.
Manarius
Okay, so I have this version and it's actually misprinted. It shows the right track order at the back but labels are switched. The strange thing about this is that they actually read "side a" for the actual "side b" and vice versa.Might this be a bootleg or something?
Aria
I bought this new myself in 1988 from a record store with the switched labels - I guess at the time no one was interested in bootlegging this immediately after release.
Delagamand
The side one/two designations are correct, the track listings aren't.
Leyl
Hey,I have the same issue but I am sure this is an original pressing! Matrix is identical to this release. Also I owned that german bootleg with pretty bad soundquality and bandname misspelled on spine (already sold) but this record here sounds fantastic and the name is correct on spine. I guess this really is just a missprint, maybe it should be added to the database as such? Regards.
Mr_Mole
Ah, that's a a bummer. Always thought I had an original issue.
nailer
looks like it ...read the entry for the other german pressing on the master page ... check the matrix numbers ... you may have the 2013 bootleg ...
HappyLove
I just picked this up at my local record store too, it was listed as a "new import" so I was bummed to realize 1) the misprint and 2) that it's likely a bootleg ripped from a CD. I'll give it a listen anyway..Quick question - which part of the label is correct? Is the "Side one" really Side One, and the label lists the songs on the other side. Or is "Side Two" actually side One and the songs listed on the label are on that side? Easier way to ask, if I want to start on "Soft As Snow" which "side" do I play first? Thanks!
Chuynopana
I agree with you, it definitely looks like a bootleg (it's now listed as unofficial). But the sound is pretty good, IMO. What do you think?
Keth
I have the same, but it was sold to me as a new record. I feel like this is an unauthorized copy. Sound is okay, seems compressed.
Kale
How About the sound ?
riki
Okay, would be interesting to know how much of these exist.
Kashicage
I have the same version, doesn't look like a bootleg to me, surely a misprinted or maybe voluntary...
Duzshura
This album still takes me back to places I had never visited. This pressing, however, sounds like garbage! An authoritative repress is yet desired.
Nuliax
Recently said by Kevin Shields in a pitchfork interview (http://www.pitchfork.com/features/interviews/8809-kevin-shields/):"..in America, Warner Bros. licensed Loveless and Isn't Anything to Plain Records, and they basically just ripped [the audio] off the CD and put it on vinyl [in 2003]. They did an awful, terrible job. It was done without my permission, and the sound quality was 100% wrong. It was a rip off to anyone who bought it."
Goldenfang
Thanks. That's helpful. As usual all those San Francisco labels truly suck.
bass
A great album that I despised on my first listen. The first track sounded totally dissonant to me, and the others just sounded disorienting and noisy. I stopped the CD half-way and tossed it in storage. A month or so later, I decided to give it a second listen, and the difference in my perception was amazing. Everything that put me off the first time seemed to come through expressively, and the first track now sounds great to my ears. I would have to say that My Bloody Valentine were a really influential band, and at the risk of cliche, "ahead of their time." Just look at the album cover -- I can't believe that's from 1988 because it looks like something that could have been released today. "Isn't Anything" makes clear that MBV were deeply rooted in rock, and some of the tracks on here are tainted yet relatively straightforward (punk?) rock songs. But the more interesting tracks are mixed in highly novel ways, with atmospheric, highly filtered sounds -- I'd call it "pretty noise" -- enveloping and transforming the traditional rock ensemble. The fact that electronic instruments are apparent on some tracks (that has to be a drum machine on the first track, right?) isn't what makes this interesting as influential electronic music. What's really interesting here is the production style: mixing and manipulation of the recorded material as means of composition. This album doesn't seem to suggest that you're hearing a facsimile of a live performance; instead, it's a composition that exists as a unique work within the recorded medium. That is really the essence of electronic music. The album does seem a little disjointed, like maybe the various tracks were recorded at different times or in different modes (different studios, setups, etc. -- I could be mistaken). But I don't really see that as a flaw, because it makes for interesting pacing and dynamic changes. You get stuck in a droning, washy track, then you're immediately jolted back into up-front guitar riffs. It's a difficult listen and may require some adjustment, but I think it's worth it. MBV has definitely influenced contemporary electronic artists -- not surprisingly the "indietronica" acts in particular, but many others as well. Dntel's "Life is Full of Possibilites" has been one of my favorite records for several years, and certain tracks on that record are indebted to MBV. But in a broader sense, I think they really pioneered a new style of composition that pushed rock in a different direction, resulting in some of the most expressive "noise" I've heard.
Qusserel
Is this the greatest rocknroll album of all time? A fucking thriller anyway. Vicious, poisonous, smooth, this is music carressing you with razorblades, coolest whitenoise ever on cutest melodies with an opiumlike androgyn voice that matches to be both detached and otherwordly warm. This record is simply both too good and too cool, and gives you a bit of both at each listening. If you consider rocknroll to be mix of danger, heartbreaking hidden pop tunes, sonic experience and narcotic poetic sexual attitude, well this is it.
