Reznors first NIN album in five years, it is one of his best, combining the textural exploration on the 1999 double CD The Fragile, and the tighter fury of his 1994 master blast, The Downward Spiral. You can dance to much of this terror, all the way to the brink and back. Reznor successful, sober and a father never uses the word suicide on Hesitation Marks. "Various Methods Od Escape" lmao how do you not look over it one last time
This record still has the doom and gloom theme as other NIN productions but somehow, Reznor's voice seems lighter on this project - as he experiments with tinges of R&B and pop-sensibilities on his vocals over the most smooth instrumental selection other than "Bad Witch". Maybe it'ss because I heard a live youtube bootleg, this group always sounds better recorded on stage than in studio for me, unless we're talking the first few Halos.Choice cuts : - Copy Of- Satellite - #CVReview
I was a little surprised not to get a CD or download code when I received this, but I'm not mad. I bought it to listen to on the turntable, and it's a great-sounding LP.
Hawk Flying
some vinyl versions, like the european, actually come with the CD alongside
The sound on the vinyl is an improvement over the CD and the audiophile download - you can hear more of the music and the sound quality is terrific. Unfortunately the discs I received have multiple issues. There are scuffs, scratches and dimples. Disc 2 has a minor warp that doesn't affect play. A replacement is on its way.
Got the record today. Both LPs are pretty badly warped. Is this a known issue for this pressing? I am about to order the replacement.
I have 2 copies and other ppl I know have this release. No warps or problems here
To be honest first I've heard of that man ^. I know several others with this album too
Returned my copies, ordered replacement - same problem - both records warped and jumping like hell.I am truly dissapointed...
My personal experience from purchasing records that came out over 1 year ago but are still being sold, is that they are usually warped. Any recordthat I've bought that didn't come out within the last 6 months usually has some type of wear due to improper storage from the company who owns the stock, records have been handled or moved around a lot have the same problem. With this record your probably getting new old stock from 2013 that has been sitting around for years. In my opinion it's extremely hard to get a good pressing of an album that only recently came out within the last 5 years or so and is no longer being pressed. I've recently found two new sealed copies of a sonic youth album that has been oop since 2009. Both were warped and had wear from the sleeves. This has happened to me even with the new faith no more album that came out in 2015. Only thing you can do is keep trying to find a better copy or wait for a better reissue to come along.
Trent being Trent... another masterpiece! A great press that no fan should pass on.
anyone else get a defective cd with their lps? mine just fucks out during In Two.
In my oppinion one of the most boring industrial rock records I ever heard. Some few nice tunes, but most of the tracks are overproduced high finish rubbish electro loops. No question about the genius of reznor, but what he is comming up with here is totally lame. This is but catchy industrial pop next to lady gaga and madonna. The in the same year released work of one of the main influences of NIN KMFDM Kunst was better even it was far from being a masterpiece.
I'm a Russian Occupant
It is well known that "The Downward Spiral" is the de facto masterpiece from Nine Inch Nails. In my opinion, "The Slip" follows along a few steps behind. However, "Hesitation Marks" is a truly grower. It's much more electronic and slower. Give it a couple listens before you judge this album. Perhaps you may think it's totally feminine compared to the harsh sounds from the past. It's clearly a new phase for Trent Reznor and I can only say that "Hesitation Marks" indeed has Nine Inch Nails' blood in its veins. I look forward to what Reznor will come up with next time.
My favorite on this album is Various Methods Of Escape, but as a whole it is great.
Amazing! Trent never fails me.
Arabella V.
Probably the best album that Trent Reznor has yet done, which is pretty astonishing given his back catalogue and how late in the day it is. ~*~
i prefer this over fragile, spiral and teeth. just my pin yin.
I m still wondering what kind of ears they have. If this is their best album what can we say about FRAGILE or the Holy One Mega Album THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I disagree wholeheartedly with this comment (my god go listen to pretty hate machine and downward spiral again, hell the fragile and with teeth are way better than this), but it is a good album. Don't think it deserved the heat it took from critics.
My favorite NIN record so far! Amazing work!!
Can anyone confirm that label C and D are pressed on the wrong sides?
Sounds like a simple production error... the stacks of labels were likely flipped for that particular batch.
Hello! With label c and d you mean label 2a and 2b. That's how it is labeled on my album. However, on my record it is pressed correctly.
First off, this is an almighty album - that is not in question. However, I took my first copy of the vinyl back as there was lots of static distortion on disc 1 and some on disc 2. The guy in the shop joked that it was the music (cheeky sod) but my second copy had exactly the same issues at exactly the same points in the songs. 'All Time Low' has the worst of the lot during the instrumental end section. Like a true NiN maniac I also had the CD release and knew it was a pressing issue. I couldn't be bothered taking my second copy back so I'm now stuck with an unlistenable version of a great album, which is very sad. My reason for this review isn't to moan or whine, but I haven't come across anyone else having this issue, so perhaps this will help narrow down what the issue is/was.As an aside, when the static spikes disappear the clarity of the recording is spectacular so I understand the 5 star reviews this LP is getting.TS

Buy the re-masters from NIN.COM Trust nobody else in this quality shift era when it comes to nin. Hurry cause they are selling out and the original albums all getting special treatments. My copy is masterful.
When I opened mine and cleaned it, I noticed that a lot of residue came off. I played it for the first time after cleaning it and I didn't have any problems, so maybe a good wash might be all that it needs for you to enjoy this work!
Very Old Chap
Thanks for your reply. I did give it light clean (I don't have a disc washer...yet!) but the thing is that the distortion was exactly the same and at exactly the same points on the album. Because I have CD and MP3 versions I know the distortion shouldn't be there. And it was on 2 different copies of the vinyl which makes me think that the shop got a bad pressing. Just bad luck I think. If I waited and bought it again I'd probably find I'd get a good one. I buy quite a lot of new heavyweight vinyl and it all sounds amazing...apart from this one. I will try your suggestion and get a washer and see if that at least improves things. Cheers
Have you tried cleaning it? I've gotten new records that have oil and stuff on it from the pressing process, and after giving them a run through on my disc washer, they sound a lot better. Maybe give that a shot if you haven't already.
the sticker on my us LP didn't say "gatefold wallet." is this picture of the european version or something?
You're right! The picture shows the european version 3744922, the US Version has a more rounded sticker on the right side (similar to the US CD version) ..see ebay for reference
beautiful pressing with great dynamics all around. Trent Reznor cares about how important is for listener and fans to hear a great mastered album. Bravo.
Well I wish he wouldn't have SLAMMED the "Audiophile Mastered" digital 24-bit files so harshly, the "audiophile" label is a bit of a joke here. Was expecting a fully open, dynamic mastering and got the same squished rubbish as the retail CD with 1 extra dB on some tracks. The vinyl sounds a little better to my ears but no-one will confirm whether it was a third mastering sent to Chris Bellman to do the cut. Sadly my pressings isn't of great quality, guess Trent doesn't know how much of a difference the pressing house makes or these would have been sent to RTI, Optimal, Record Industry, QRP or someone like that.
Trent Reznor turns in what is probably his best album as Nine Inch Nails, since either 1999's sprawling 'The Fragile' or it's predecessor 1994's 'The Downward Spiral'. 'Hesitation Marks' simultaneously manages to sound revitalized and fresh, while nodding to many moments of the NIN back catalog. While many of Trent's records are conceptually thematic, few of them adhere to what one would call a "story". The exceptions being the previously mentioned 'TDS' and 2007's 'Year Zero' which told relatively clear, if quite different, narratives with their own "genres" or "color palettes". Here we see NIN cast their gaze backwards and forwards, telling their most clearly personal and emotionally bare tale in over a decade. Reznor's lyrics act as internal monologue of a narrator who has been to hell and back and back to hell again... and is trapped in a cycle he is fighting desperately to break. He flip-flops between attack and surrender, his mental perception sometimes altering mid-stream. His addiction acting as a secondary voice itself flips between seduction and chastisement. Premature victory, indignant relapse, blind running, and utter resignation are the emotional touchstones that make 'Hesitation Marks' a raw and compelling listen. The production reflects these qualities through its use of minimalist structures, simple layers of drum programming, backing textures of vocal ambiance, and abrupt shifts in both mix and movement. Upon reaching the conclusion of this record, I am left simply hoping that in the future we are treated to a third part to this open-ended story (which is something of Mr. Reznor's autobiography in musical form), and the darkness which threatens the broken and bruised moment of peace at the end of this record can be finally overcome. 5/5 stars, A+, two thumbs up.
I didn't get that from this record. I heard 3 or 4 solid tunes and then a lot of stuff TR's already done much better before. A bunch of it felt phoned in. We've seen how deep he can go. A lot of unsatisfying surface scratching here.
