Using the original UK LP as a reference, not the botched preemphasized CD issues; there are some things to point out on each CD from the set. 2001 Set: CD1 (album) is more muffled and has less treble overall, percussion is less present. CD2 (extra) is quite alright, louder than originals, but many of the tracks here were only pressed in some hard to find CD or 7" inch vinyl. Some mixes appear here for the first time mastered for CD. There is not much difference from the tracks that can be found in Alternative B-Side compilation. I think this particular CD2 from this set, is better than 2018. If you have it, keep it. The 2018 set: CD1 (album) has got better mastering than 2001. One would argue that, a japanese CD release that has got no preemphasis or the original vinyl is better -- but indeed, they do have more treble, which is tamed here. However, the sound is superior to the 2001 version. Honestly, I myself would prefer that the equalization from the vinyl could have been used as a reference with more bass. But in this set, they still have the treble a little off. If you have bat ears, actually this version may sound the best and the LP may sound too bright. The CD2 (extras) are "the same" from 2001. I say "the same" because it will take some annoying ABX test time to find out spots where some tracks are a little different. I'd say a few percent inferior (4% inferior) in terms of clarity. But fear not, I'd also say things here have not changed that much or if at all.One of the major problems in this release is how the equalization affects "Paninaro (Italian Remix)" in both sets, 2001 and 2018. You can notice that, a pattern was followed, and "Paninaro" from Disco 1 is much more superior to both releases here, being a track that you can easily distinguish the sloppy mastering job in a few seconds, particularly with this track.For now, I'm staying with the 2018 CD set, since a lot of material was unavailable on CD, the album is more or less mastered alright and the extras mastering is a virtual thing basically. I'd say the CD1 from 2018, and CD2 from 2001 are the perfect couple. So that you can buy both releases... (another catch -- these guys know we exist).Hope this helps you a bit.

WHAT AN AWESOME album and what an awesome package of 2 cds and an awesome booklet with awesome stories great remastered and well doneit was done with a lot of love. Thank You parlophone for that great idea. The Pet shop boys had huge cds and a lot of hits in the 80s and 90s and even their b sides were great

First heard this beauty when I was about thirteen years old. I'm nearly twenty now and I still adore it, recently listening to it and remembering how fond I am of it. From start to finish, Neil and Chris supply the synth sound I love. As a big eighties synth-pop fan, this album more than qualifies to be in my top ten in that genre. My favorite tracks are "Love Comes Quickly," "West End Girls," and "Suburbia." Neil's vocals are so stunning, and the accompaniment is just as much so! I often find Chris Lowe is overshadowed by Neil Tennant when really, they should be held as equals. This album showcases both of their abilities extremely well. An excellent debut in my eyes.

Completely agree with what is already written. I was very much looking forward to this, and the result is stunning. The basses are very heavy but the sound is so much more spacious. I never heard this amazing record like that. It's so good, it's almost overwhelming...One more time, an amazing repress on Parlophone.

Sounds absolutely stunning. The remaster doesn't take away anything from the songs. It only heightens their power. The pads are mixed louder and more spacious and the beats hit harder and have more breathing room. Wonderful reissue.

Remastering glitch at 2:24 on the album version of Opportunities? Seems to cut out early on the (not sure how best to describe this) four keyboard stabs? between the "lets make lots of..." and the " aaahhhh ahhh ahh money" bit.

I don't like this alternative sleeve version at all but in return you get a great sounding release thanks to the Direct Metal Mastering.

"A Man Could Get Arrested" track 2-1 on this release is not the regular twelve-inch B-side also referred to as the 'alternative version'. The whole intro (16 seconds) has been removed replaced by an extended cut of the rhythmic tracks (drums, bass, synth). Apart from that new beginning, the rest remains unchanged. The overall duration of the track is 10 seconds shorter than the 'alternative version'.

Inlay says it uses the "Dolby System", meaning Dolby B noise reduction, however the tape itself doesn't indicate this, and it really sounds correct when played back with Dolby off.

"Please" is with "Actually" and perhaps "Very" and "Yes" one of the best PSB albums ever (no matter what the "Behavio(u)r" lovers out there will say). What's not to like about this album ? 4 top singles : the cult "West End Girls", the lovely "Love Comes Quickly", the smashing and ironic "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)" and the epic sounding "Suburbia".But that's not all, even the album songs are incredibly good "Two Divided By Zero", "I Want A Lover", "Why Don't We Live Together" and the more mellow "Tonight Is Forever". "Please" is a classic. Surely one of the 100 albums to listen to before you die.And the song "Violence" will be even better in its "Hacienda version" released 8 years later during the "Very" days.

Track #4 (Disc 2) is a previously unreleased mix - different to the actual 12" version released in 1985 (Dance mix) and which reappeared again in 1986 (Original Dance mix). I literally spoil you with my trainspotting, I know.

Yeah the mix is different. It's not just a different edit compared to the dance mix, there are various segments that are quite altered.To this day the original 7" mix of Opportunities and the original dance mix remain unreleased on CD.

In 1987, I bought this NIMBUS-pressed disc in the U.S. at a domestic price. If I remember correctly, it was not in a longbox! It was in a blister pack. It may have had a sticker; I don't recall. It's likely that it did have a U.S. barcode sticker, but it was so long ago, I can't confirm.EMI America editions were already out at the time—I bought the EMI America Disco longbox the same day. So I'm thinking EMI America initially distributed an overstock batch of these Nimbus UK editions in stickered blister packs. Can anyone out there confirm or refute this? Please reply if you bought this NIMBUS ENGLAND disc in the USA.

The track listing on the outer slipcase says that the dance mix of "West End Girls" (CD 2, track 6) was previously unreleased on CD, when in fact, it was. The dance mix of "West End Girls" appeared on the official PSB compilation "Essential" in 1998.

It is the only album by Pet Shop Boys to be recorded using 'emphasis', a digital audio recording process designed to improve the overall signal-to-noise ratio. This was my very first CD, I still recall to this day the initial moments of it's first play, the start of 'Two Divided by Zero'. This album was only bettered by their masterpiece 'Behaviour' (1990).
