Overall, I feel like Lullabies to Paralyze would have been equal to Songs of the Deaf -SotD- if they had replaced Skin on Skin, Broken Box, and You got a Killer Scene there, man with Like a Drug, Precious and Grace, and Infinity. Of the three import tracks, Precious and Grace is the ZZ Top cover unlike the original, is more reminiscent of the high energy tracks from SotD like First it Giveth and Go With the Flow and is probably my favorite. First, I'd like to clarify that I've given this album 4 Stars based on Queens Of The Stone Age's entire body of work. It was primarily written and recorded in April 1998 by founding member Josh Homme and his former Kyuss bandmate Alfredo Hernández, with Hernández playing drums and Homme singing and playing the rest of the instruments. Best version you can buy at an affordable price, Infinity is one of the best tracks on the album and was missing from the more recent etched vinyl version.
Dianantrius
Does not sound as good as the original 2005 pressing. This has lower dynamic range and muddier sound. Buy the that one instead.
Ber
Sounds a lot better than the MOV version, which is seriously lacking dynamic range in comparison.
Dusar
Pleasant, warm, detailed and clear sound. Wide stereo with where each instrument has its place. Perfect mastering. Bass in "Tangled up in plaid" is eartastic :-)
Beazerdred
Wonderful sounding reissue. Flat as a pancake, dynamic and not a pop or click to be heard anywhere. Great job.
Gavikelv
Excellent sounding pressing! Very glad I bought it.. It's definitely worth picking up. Sounds a lot better than the US ver. Era Vulgaris they recently reissued, but I'll have to give it another listen. m/(>_<)m/
inform
Was this version mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundmans like the Songs For The Deaf reissue? The original LP was also mastered at Bernie Grundmans studio but I’m not sure by whol, so I’m curious how they compare?
Pad
. . Right on dude, thnx for the info. .
Bad Sunny
The original was cut by Brian Gardner with his flower etching on side B runout and the '!' -etching on the other three sides. This reissue is cut by Bernie and the sound is really close to the original cut, the new cut is just slightly quieter. On a side note, if the '!' / "!" -etching is Gardner's simplified flower signature, that would mean that the cutting assistant Bellman refered to on the recent SFTD-recut is actually the cutter of the original US pressing!
Ieslyaenn
So what I’m asking is, if this reissue and the original were mastered by BG, are the differences discernible?
Topmen
As commented on this Steve Hoffman forum, all these reissues except Songs for the Deaf were cut by Bernie Grundman, who signs in the deadwax with "BG".On the other hand, a doubt was generated in the forum because the deadwax of the SFTD does not say "CB" as it should, but instead appears "!". Because of this, Chris Bellman himself writes explaining that he was on vacation and his assistant cut the lacquers of this album with his notes.https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/queens-of-the-stone-age-vinyl-reissues-coming.889770/page-5
Maman
Anyone who can write about the sound? Comparisons with the MOV release? Thanks
Zan
How this sounds compare to the 2011's Music On Vinyl release?
Ballagar
Just listened to the first 3 songs and it sounds very crisp and booming bass. Medication sounds much less compressed than ive grown used too and "everybody knows you are insane" sounds fantastic. I dont have the other vinyls to compare to but it sounds so much better than spotify/cd ever has. And miles better than the rated r repress they did last month. Its on level with the songs for the deaf repress for me.
GAMER
This pressing sounds crisp and quiet even with my very basic setup. By far the best sounding Queens vinyl that I own.To be honest LtP wasn't my favorite Queens album but after listening to it on this vinyl, it made me appreciate the album a lot more.
Delan
I had the MOVLP version, which sounded punchy AF. Just opened this one and it's a fvcking banger. Crystal clear, wide separation, punchy... In other words: the ultimate pressing for this record hands down.
Gir
I note the upcoming reissue is being (wisely) stretched out to 4 sides instead of 3, and has an extra track (Infinity) into the bargain. Why couldn't they have taken this kind of care with the Era Vulgaris reissue? It makes zero sense.
Mmsa
The main album is split over roughly the same amount of vinyl. The extra side is mainly for the bonus tracks.
Cargahibe
you really like to complain ,like, a child...Pffff, lol .. How old are you ??
Rocky Basilisk
This is getting reissued at the end of the year with this tracklist but the original CD art.
Alsalar
I pulled this out of the record bin @ Waterloo records in 2005 after an Acoustic QOTSA show, and then i bumped into Josh outside and I asked him to sign the cover. He signed his name and 'Wolf'. lol
Quamar
Excellent sounding record. I've always thought QOTSA's music sounded compressed when I heard a CD or digital files. This vinyl release totally opens things up and creates nice space between the instruments. Definition and clarity are above average and the soundstage is big. Drums are punchy and guitar tone is dynamic. The music is hard driving and intense. Love listening to this band on vinyl, it's just a nice thick sound. Pressing is quality, flat centered and only some minor clicks and pops. Overall worth it to pick up an original copy of this. I think my local record store dude must have copped one of these from the warehouse find sale because I found a sealed copy today for a more than reasonable price. Not too long ago, a sealed copy would cost you $125. That was still a little to steep for me. When I saw the copy I got today, sealed, for $50, I bought it in a flash. IMO, if you could find this record sealed for under $100, that's a deal.
Nicearad
If you scored one of these from the online find just to flip it, I wish only the worst for you.
Drelahuginn
My copy has the black sticker on the front but the vinyls are the red version. Did i get lucky?
Yndanol
I have the red version but the black sticker did I just get super lucky?
Chillhunter
Finally got a copy for a decent price and it plays like a dream. Almost 0 surface noise and the music sounds fantastic. I'd recently listened to an original press with a friend and this honestly sounds better, only thing you're missing out on is the bonus tracks from the first press.
Bearus
Appalling pressing. Pops, clicks and a skip within the first 30 seconds of opening track on Side A. Maybe I had a defective copy, but this sounded absolutely appalling too.
Roram
This pressing sounds fucking awesome, just like all MOV releases. A must buy.
Oreavi
You can always tell when such a complex sound as this, (multiple panned guitars and vocal overdubs, pounding drums etc) has been done properly and thats exactly the case with the mix and this MOV release. It's absolutely huge - such clarity, cymbals and vocals have such presence. As the last post said - it sounds so fucking good. Just £20 and you would expect it to be an audiophile release.
Deeroman
anyone happen to know how many of these were pressed?
Cordalas
I've been a Stoner Rock snob for a long time and the only QOTSA album I ever really cared about was the debut and their splits on MR. After years of growing up and slowly breaking out of the Stoner Rock mold I'm learning to appreciate the rest of the QOTSA catalog. I picked this up recently and listening to it now it's like those few records that don't have a bit of filler on it. Every track seems like a part of the record rather than just a track to fill void space. I love albums that are living and breathing as if every track is a requirement on that album. Love this record. Also the MOV version is amazing, feels, plays, sounds great. I usually don't second guess MOV pressings and rarely look at the price. Great pressing all around and I know it's 2018 and I've been listening to the Man's Ruin catalog since before this record was released, but it's like finding something new and amazing staring me in the face. Awesome!
Sat
Why not just buy the black version? You gonna pay $200+ for red PVC?
Ariseym
Had to replace my copy of the album as it had a huge scratch on the C-Side of the record. Another record (not by queens) I have ordered "via" MOV came with LP1 of a two LP set inserted twice, with one missing. Kinda shocked as I didn't expect that from MOV. But the pressing itself is top notch.
Adorardana
Great sound. Mine came with no side B label. First time i've got a MOV release with any sort of defect. Not a biggie though.
Rolling Flipper
The addition of 'Infinity', 'Like a Drug' and 'Precious and Grace' on the second half of the LP makes this a total different album experience from the Compact Disc release.
bass
So would you consider this a better release because of it?
Valawye
My copy of this pressing also sounds fantastic. Agree that the artwork looks poor, but the content is top notch.
Yadon
Amazing sound, even better than the original pressing to my ears.
Watikalate
How come nobody's bootlegged this yet? x x x x
Katius
And QOTSA just announced that LTP will be reissued with the bonus tracks from this issue, so my original question is moot.
Winotterin
The 180G black MOV pressing from 2011 is still up for sale at original retail pricing on a few sites...when those disappear inferior quality boots will likely surface
OTANO
The MOV version is based off the CD version, without the unique artwork and bonus tracks.
Pemand
Would you buy a bootleg version of this release, or would you rather buy the MOV official reissue?
fetish
Excellent sound quality, insanely good master, sounds much better than the digital or cd versions. Not to mention the wicked awesome album art on this version. All in all, worth the seventy bucks I paid for an unopened copy.
Hulbine
The gatefold cover is pretty flimsy, but the records sound nice. MOV did a superb job on the mastering of the tracks, the sound quality of this album is extremely well done compared to the CD.
Dugor
No kidding. It sounds incredible. Feels like I am hearing it for the first time.
Malhala
Sounds pretty nice. Nice thick 180gram vinyl. A good buy, but unless you're a serious QotSA fan the average price of $40 is not worth it in my opinion. (I got for half off so it was worth it to me.)
Efmprof
Best album by Queens of the stone age! I put this CD in my player and it plays through without skipping a song! Its that good, every song on here is great and worth listening to repeatedly! Every other Queen's album are great but this one is my personal fav.
Celen
Medication - not my cup of tea. didn't appeal to me much for being a first track. too fast paced and out of place. doesn't set the mood. Everybody Knows That You Are Insane - the analogy to QOTSA is that their music is like a rock rubberband. it stretches, and Homme's voice is really fluid sometimes. this is one of those songs. Tangled Up In Plaid - ONE OF MY FAVS! solid beat, very addicting! Burn The Witch - humorous, especially after the music video. Also fun to jam to. In My Head - sexy song of a rocker committed to his girl. That makes me believe again :) haha. I Never Came- ALSO one of my favs. I love the highpitched intro coconut sound. Lovely. Someone's In The Wolf - Also another one of my favs. less stretch, solid beat. A little more chill than the rest, for once :) Very nice. The Blood Is Love - nice buildup factor in this song. lots of tension. Skin On Skin - wasn't so fascinated. Broken Box - although i call this song a stretchy one aswell, its one of my favorites on the album. the stretch of the guitar is exactly what makes me love it! "You Got A Killer Scene There Man..." Fun Lyrics - "i just cursed the sun so i could howl at the moon" !! Nice. Long Slow Goodbye - meh. *shrugs.
