Rrose came to the attention of the worldwide techno scene in 2011 after the release of three EPs and an album on the Sandwell District label. Densely textured and experimental yet wholly at home on the dancefloor, Rroses music channels the spirit of technos roots while injecting influences from pre-techno electronic music and the avant-garde. Other identifying features include a focus on the tactile qualities of sound and the integration of gradual, interconnected transformations of material. Tommy Four Seven: Thanks Rrose exists. Rrose's return to Stroboscopic Artefacts, now a precursor to his next appaearance on the label's five years anniversary compilation due to drop next month, followed his remix for another Stroboscopic Artefacts affiliate, Dadub, at the beginning of 2013. At the time of writing this, it is the artist's only release outside either the now defunct Sandwell district imprint or his own Eaux (mental) power house. This time around he's not commissioned to do a remix though, but is given enough space for a full release on the fairly consistent - and unfortunately exlusively digital - Monad series. The ambiguous producer, who boasts a playful feminine stage presence, has over the past few years been operating with an elemental approach to techno that's equally as cerebral as it is visceral. "Monad XVI" does not deviate from that formula, and synchronizing with Monad's intermittently experimental approach, he goes even further than usual, diving deeper into the realm of his brain melting techno, resulting in perhaps his most compelling and elaborate piece of work. The EP is all about patient builds and dissolves, break downs and solidifications, brimming with exhilarating goodness and intricate sound design and structure. Things kick off rather patiently with Onceless, being drenched with panoramic drones and echoed clangs, floating un-anchored by a kick drum for more than three minutes. However, its humming and haunting drones enable a rather evocative feel, and while the sounds used are rather opaque, the atmosphere is lush and engulfed in some sort of spatial cosiness. Whatever that may mean, but Onceless is one hell of a picturesque, if not vivid composition. The Stare is the only track here that starts percusively right away, in fact it is the sole number on the EP that has incessant drum kicks throughout, but it still manifests great restraint, only gradually letting its swirling synths and rushing cymbals reach their maximum intensity. Slighlty after the two minute mark there is a spine tingling moment when some additional bass boost is gradually introduced, enhancing the already hectic atmosphere. A proper goosebumps moment, if Rrose ever conceived one. Kneeling deliberately shuns percussive elements as it ebbs into yawning abyss, but its kaleidoscopic sirens, bleeping in and out of sync with each other, underpinned by a loosely consistent droning bass line create a labyrinth of movement while spiralling downwards. To end things comes Wet Silk Will, a low bpm effort applying discordant, high-pitched melodies that seem to come from some archaic derivative of a didgeridoo, and rather gentle, slightly fractured beats, it conjures images of your mind getting taken over by a superior alien life form while taking a late night walk through a hazy swamp in some nightmarish movie. It perfectly completes a half hour of fantastically momentous and far reaching techno soundscapes best heard in one sitting from start to finish. This is an outrageously illustrous release, and one that surmounts issues of format, content or texture. Even being a fervent vinyl devotee, "Monad XVI", for once made me close an eye, and I do not think I will live to regret it. You need this four tracker, you just aren't aware of it yet. For me, this is the finest digital only release I own.
Anyone out there know if this is getting a vinyl release??
in waiting
i also wouldn't mind a vinyl release tbh :PLove that dirty analog sound ^^I'm sure I heard some of that at Labyrinth, and I think I even had a glipmse of the machine that actually make these sounds , definitely the sounds of the 3rd track here
It seems this series don't get a vinyl release :(
I believe part of the concept behind the monad series is digital only. I remember Kangding Ray speaking about his monad release, saying that he had tried to produce the tracks with analog tools to see how it would then translate as a digital medium.
