The Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 107, has a certain slyly menacing quality in its outer movements that Weilerstein catches to the hilt, while she brings lyrical warmth to the broad Moderato slow movement. 2, Op. 126, is a haunted, and in Weilerstein's hands, a haunting work. Shostakovich composed these two concertos for cello and orchestra in the space of seven years, and for the same peerless performer, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. The two concertos are, in Weilersteins own words, like apples and oranges, so different are they. These are both virtuoso pieces for cello and Weilerstein, one of my very favorite cellists, responds to them full out. I dont know what music for cello she cant play but she has demonstrated a preference for Eastern European and Russian music, and I, for one, hope she continues to indulge it. Alisa Weilerstein returns with Shostakovich's cello masterworks: Concertos 1 & 2. Weilerstein's interpretation is underpinned by her meeting Rostropovich - a close friend of the composer and the cellist for whom both works were written - when she was 22, playing Shostakovich for him and absorbing his advice and wisdom.
