The album contains Tears For Fears' first three hit singles Mad World , Change , and Pale Shelter all of which reached the Top 5 in the UK. It also contains a new version of the bands first single, Suffer The Children , which had originally been released in 1981. The Hurting would have been a daring debut for a pop-oriented band in any era, but it was an unexpected success in England in 1983, mostly by virtue of its makers' ability to package an unpleasant subject - the psychologically wretched family histories of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith - in an attractive and sellable musical format. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears was initially associated with the new wave synthesizer bands of the early 1980s. Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, England, in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears was initially associated with the new wave synthesizer bands of the early 1980s. Later, the band branched out into mainstream rock and pop and attained international chart success. Tears for Fears was part of the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US. Tears for Fears were always more ambitious than the average synth pop group. From the beginning, the duo of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith were tackling big subjects - their very name derived from Arthur Janov's primal scream therapy, and his theories were evident throughout their debut, The Hurting. Smith left the group early in the '90s, and Orzabal continued with Tears for Fears, pursuing more sophisticated and pretentious directions to a smaller audience. Orzabal and Smith met as children in Bath, England. Both boys came from broken homes, and Smith was leaning toward juvenile delinquency. Does anyone have this version with the PO Box address printed on the back in a smaller compact font like the 1985 re-issue.
Runeterror
Good press and for me the best Tears for Fears album (I personally have only two, the other being Songs for the Big Chair) and have no interest in the others, Classic tracks like Mad World, Change are classic 80's music. The album has other great tracks too such as Suffer the Children and The Hurting, Bought a JP vinyl press as Im based in Asia and generally Japanese presses of first pressings are most likely to be in the best condition.
Fonceiah
Watch me bleed is epic, really good lyrics, this song is quality!
Clodebd
This one sounds hallow. Not very dynamic at all. Earlier pressing capture a much fuller, warmer and rich sound. The artist are a little behind the music. Very compressed. Surprisingly, the CD even has a richer sound.
Andronrad
I bought this a couple months ago - a bit disappointed to find out that the bonus download is only .mp3 format. For something marketed as 'High Quality/Fidelity' audio, I assumed the download would be the same quality as on the blu-ray.Was the download always .mp3? Or was there a HQ download available for a limited time that I was too late (5 years) for?
Gholbirius
The pressing is really good. No big problems and well done. But I listened to 2 copies and found the same "issue" on the same spot on otherwise pretty flawless pressings and would like to know if others have it:On "Ideas as Opiates" about 2:25 in - when the lyrics "Belief is our relief/We don't care" end in that jarring plucked string arpeggio leading into the saxophone part - there is also some surface noise/static (kind of sound you might get with non-fill) right on top of that plucked string part (right after the word "care"). It almost blends in because that part is kind of meant (I think) to be jarring and a bit cacophonous. However, it is definitely in the pressing. Had it on 2 copies, so it might be on the plates? Anyone else?
Kigul
You possibly know this already by now but it's not a problem with the pressing or plating. The vinyl is cut from the 2013 30th Anniversary remaster and the glitch is apparently on all versions of that release, including the Deluxe Edition and Box Set versions. You'd think that 6 years down the line the record company might have used a different master rather than one that's already been widely complained about, but no.
Ricep
my version did not come with a download code.. can someone confirm this actually comes with one?
Dawncrusher
Sorry a bit late to the show here !!! But just had a look at my version and yes it has a "The Sound Of Vinyl" 3" square label that I had to shame out of the sleeve. Didn't even know it was in there until I read your question. Just have been lodged in there pretty tight. Bought mine from Amazon new a few months ago.
Vivados
No download code here either, just unwrapped it new :'(
Bodwyn
I know for sure mine didn't come with one, just the LP.
Tisicai
Maybe it’s a regional issue? Mine was purchased US through Amazon. No hype sticker that indicated a DL.
Coiriel
My copy did include a download code. Purchased it in Paris, France.

Nor did mine. Great album though. Good quality pressing. Word.

Great dynamics. The West-Germans knew what they were doing. booya

This Blu-Ray version actually has 4 bonus tracks which are not listed above.
Mash
Don't know which version you're talking about, mine only has the 10 songs.

How can this be an RSD release and exclusive to the Hurting box set preorders? It can only be one or the other, surely? I think that as there is already an entry for the box set that this 7" was part of then this shouldn't have its own separate entry...

The US label incorrectly lists "Pale Shelter" as being 5:24. It's actually 4:24 and the same as the UK counterpart.
Gold as Heart
This blu ray is not recorded in 5.1, however it is still very impressive and clean. I can crank up Watch Me Bleed, until my ears almost bleed. Worth it, if you can find it under $20.

Further to the notes above referring to CD2 track 4 'Ideas As Opiates' there is also a VERY noticeable difference between the album version and the supposed B-side version from the 'Mad World' single [which isn't on here]. The sound of the percussion / congas on the album version [represented on both CDs here] is more heavily treated / gated, which isn't the case on the original B-side.

  buzzdroid : Absolutely ! thumps up :-) Classic !!!

My copy don't include the front sticker from back to black and don't include the coupon to download the mp3. Very simple front cover, the LP is inserted into the lyrics sheet and not a high quality inner sleeve to protect the LP. The picture reproduction on the lyrics sheet is not as good as the original. Some songs doesn't sound like on the original first press release and it's clearly a remaster made at the abbey road studio(they usually do an amazing job there). The LP is noisy because of the insertion of the disc in the lyrics sheet and not a good quality inner sleeve. Some minors hair lines, some clicks and pops sound all over the record, the kind of sound you will find on an used copy in a VG+ or Near mint record. My guess is that they remaster the master tapes or the tapes (single mixes for some songs) they was able to find since some songs don't sound like on the original record...and they cut this record from the digital remaster and it's not fully analog... But it's not a big surprise since most of the rereleases are cut from digital files and not analogue sources. The sound is ok, but for the price (40$) and the fact that it's nothing more than a digital record, maybe buy the blu-ray version or the 30th anniversary box set with tons of extra tracks will be a better price bargain...or try to find a near mint used copy at a good price. I buy this new rerelease to upgrade my old Canadian copy who is in a bad condition.

I have two LP versions from the 80s, both North American copies, and both have a note about digital mastering on the back cover. Digitally mastered recordings were more common in the 80s than people realize. I doubt this record was ever 100% analog in any form. Dunno about 80s UK or Euro pressings, but I doubt it.

There's also another version around with a slightly different Matrix/Runout: "811 039-2 05% BZ MADE IN USA". All the other details are exactly the same of this release, including the catalog number "Mercury ‎– 811 039-2".

Anyone have this and can comment on the pressing/mastering quality? I have the original US vinyl which is very good, but my copy is a little damaged in a few places and looking to replace it. Thanks!

Sounds like a nice run through a spin clean is in order :)

Hi! i can tell you since i own it plus the original first italian pressing. well this reissue is amazing sounding. not at the first listen, i was a bit afraid of the little surface noise towards the beggining of the record, but after two spins those press residue issues were long gone. this reissue sounds total identique to my old copy, so the original reels were used and well mastered for this. same bass and same instrumental drumming, analogue and full. if you are scared to play yours - and i was afraid too - since mine was full of IGD ,buy it with no doubts. my only complaint is the artwork, i really prefer the alternative version (mine is it) with the duo looking sadly onto the lake in the autumn light, but... i swapped them immediatly! :) so hope to helped you. don't have doubts, this reissue is very well done. made in holland at the records industry pressing plant. reference quality.happy listening!

On disc 2, aside from using the wrong songs for tracks 4 and 15, track 11 is riddled with tape speed errors! (or some kind of glitch that sounds like it)—listen at 0:05, 0:06, 0:21, 0:52, 1:54, 2:09, 2:31, 2:39, 3:52... Doesn't anybody check these things before they go out?The answer is no, no they don't. The record companies give zero fucks. They want your money. That's all they want. That's all they've ever wanted. Now hand it over, chump.

"The Hurting" is one of those rare albums that never dates. Has been on my constant playlist since I first got it as teenager back in 1983. "Memories Fade" has got to be one of the greatest love songs ever written.
Forey
Absolutely agree. “Memories Fade” IS one of the greatest love songs ever written and “Mad World” one of the best songs ever written
Pryl
The version of We Are Broken on this release is the same track as Broken Revisited which appears on the Songs From The Big Chair 2006 Deluxe Edition.
Leniga
I see now, they made an error and included Broken Revisted and said it was We Are Broken.
Oveley
The only version here for We Are Broken is shorter and live.
Qucid
I was working in a record shop at the time and this edition, with the embossed sleeve, first appeared in 1985 after Big Chair took off and around the time the Suffer The Children and Pale Shelter singles were reissued.
Manarius
Even Depeche Mode , with all their gear and synths, were utterly taken aback by Big Chair and Hurting - led directly to DM composing the Black Celebration album and the "Shake The Disease" single. TFF were incredibly influential
Umdwyn
if i'm not mistaken, the song "pale shelter" is featured on the H&M commercial
