My copy's cover has a white bottom half with a huge bar code on it. The spine also mentions that it's a Capitol reissue. I can't seem to find any that look exactly like it on Discogs, so I'm selecting this one for now.

Very interesting question, BUT the stereo mix, it is clear now, was actually a fake stereo or duophinic as it was called in the Sates. Saying the mono mix was a reduction from the fake stereo (?) for this UK press is quite a speculation....I guess Capitol USA sent out a copy of the original masters as released in USA : DUAL and MONO mix that was still the standard in poor Europe of those years. I had both original pressing and the American one sounded with little less dynamic than the UK. That is all. Maybe I have no ultrasonic ears but that was the sensation I got . Not a great difference indeed . Anyway I find hard thinking that American capitol records sent out a dual mix to arrange for all the releases....
Is it the greatest pop album of all time? God Only Knows. This is the point where the litany of car and surfing songs disappear, the progressive arrangements and productions hinted at over the last few albums are sharpened, and the scope of the compositions is expanded drastically. In short, everything comes together for a dozen perfect songs that wallow in a cosmic degree of longing, fear and regret. Even the ostensibly “up” singles “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Sloop John B” are depressing, but not as depressing or brilliant as other selections like “I Know There’s an Answer” or “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder).”
I seemed to have gotten a piss-poor pressing, as my copy not only has a miscut edge with a huge piece of excess vinyl hanging off the edge, half of the records edges are smooth, while the other is sharp as a Razer! To top it all off, the record changes speed as its playing the further you get, which I assume is warping.Its the stereo mix, which while not bad, you'd think Capitol would have used the '66 mono mix considering it was released for the albums 50th anniversary.
Very bad sounding pressing, total lack of treble, boosted bass. Sounds like a counterfeit. Not recommended.

Gotta give my 2¢ on this one. I remember listening to the 40th anniversary remaster feeling pretty disappointed thinking, is this as good as it gets? Coming around to the 50th anniversary mono remaster I'm pleased that there's finally a respectable version for the masses. I'm blasting the wax as I type and I gotta say it really hits the spot. It's a loud master, full bottom and open crispy high end. All of the emotion and presence is there. Who cares it's a digital transfer. This one takes it home.
Finally found one close to where I live. My first and definitely not last Analogue Productions record, worth spending the extra money for the best quality. Glad to have a well done stereo pressing made by a company that knows what they're doing
The european version is a little off center on side a. I asked for a replacement, got one, was also off center ... and I found a youtube video with the same issue. I was annoyed at first but to be honest, I can't hear any wow ... sound quality is great otherwise.
I've had my copy of this for a while but never got around to commenting on it. The mastering, an AAA job from Kevin Gray, is incredible but this pressing definitely has some QC issues as sometimes happens with records that QRP presses (both for their related Analogue Productions label and others). My copy has a larger than normal spindle hole, which means even though the pressing is a bit off-center (especially on side 2) I can carefully, manually center the record so it's not dreadfully off-pitch. For a premium audiophile pressing, none of this should be necessary. Records should be pressed on-center with a correctly sized spindle hole, end of story.

I just picked up a copy of this pressing (with the "Stereo" misprint on the label). I'm confused as to why the discogs entry says released in 1974 when the jacket says 1972.
On my copy the IFPI numbers are practically right on top of each other. The IFPI L043 is read in the same direction as MASTERED BY EMI MFG.. The other IFPI is upside down from that and is 1639 on mine not 1665 so that's a variant MOULD SID .
Six months back, I finally opened up to the genius that is “Pet Sounds”. I knew I wanted it on vinyl, but couldn’t decide between Mono or Stereo. At first, I bought the mono version, but was unimpressed w/ the dynamics. Then I bought a stereo version & the difference was night and day! This release is almost comically lush; the details on display here expose the grandeur of this album as it was meant to be experienced.
I have heard the mono and stereo versions of this put out by Analogue Productions, and let me tell you that this is the version to get, hands down. It's not even close.This is the best I've ever heard this album sound by a mile. This should be on your shelf if you are an audiophile and a Beach Boys fan. I may even buy a backup copy while I can. I could easily see this being a $200 record one day.
well if you love pay money to scalpers, $200 is ridiculous, AP they will print more copies.

I also must be one of the lucky ones. I bought my copy used for $12 at a local record store, and it's dead quiet and flat as anything. Sonics are excellent and I'm hearing things in this copy that I never heard in any of my digital versions (CD or master version on Tidal). Recommended.
What can I say? Listening to Analogue Production's MONO 45RPM pressing of Pet Sounds is an experience. No review will equal the experience of hearing the album for yourself. I know there are those that don't like short albums to be spread over two LPs, and I understand. But I think this pressing is an exception, and the minor inconvenience is totally worth it. You will hear things in these tracks you never heard before.
It goes without saying that "Pet Sounds" is an incredible album, but this bog-standard reissue does not do the music justice. It is sourced from digital, which isn't inherently bad, but the sound quality does seem to be slightly lacking when compared to my '70s brown-cover mono reissue. However, the real let-down of this version is the pressing quality. Pressed by United, my copy has the usual United surface noise, but also multiple non-fill spots that cause audible rumble during quiet passages. Overall, it's still listenable, but shows that United really needs to step up their abysmal quality control.
It is not sourced from digital. The mastering is the same as the one used in the 1972 Carl & The Passions Pet Sounds pressing.
I've got this release and just realized that it's supposed to have a label. My label on both sides of the record is just black.

Oh. My. God. Worth the extra $10. Have yet to get an Analogue Productions release that has disappointed in anyway. The dynamics are incredible. Have owned 3 versions of this record, this is my favorite by far.

Wow. Simply amazing. I haven’t heard the mono or stereo pressing released by Analogue Productions in 2015, nor have I heard any of the other remasters or the original mixes (on vinyl), but I can tell you that this is one of the best sounding records I’ve heard...period.

This is the best version you can get of Pet Sounds, Mono, Stereo, Cd or Vinyl. Trust me! Usually I dig my BB in mono, but this one clears the floor with the mono, and being in 45RPM its better resolution than 33.3 rpm on one disc.

Seriously, it’s just Pet Sounds, what are you talking about. Yes, that’s the statement I’ve wanted to make for nearly fifty years now, though I don’t, as I fear the pitchforked mob that would storm my castle late into the night, smash my rather expensive stereo and distribute my precious record collection among themselves.Pet Sounds has taken on mythical attributes that it cannot possibly live up to, yet anyone who dares criticize the release is seen to be without intelligence, without a soul, without the decency to respect what Brian Wilson in the midst of his drugged out haze and mental breakdown had done. I’ll admit, I’ve championed this record many times, cited its credentials, discussed the music, the lyrics and the current of emancipation that supposedly flowed through it. Without a doubt, the influences of this record and the impact it has had on so many listeners, yet alone artists is staggering. Considering that, I never want for an endless grouping of individuals who profess their love for this record, yet when I put them on the spot, I’ve found very few who can name more than two tracks from the record, and surprisingly, most can name none, standing their shuffling their feet, lost in the religious fervor of something they can’t see, can’t touch, and may or may not have ever actually sat down and listened to.Pet Sounds is not complicated, it doesn’t require a master’s degree in music to comprehend, it’s simply more of what Brian Wilson does so well, creating pop songs. The album was disappointing to me when it came out and it still is today … it was disappointing to most people, it didn’t chart well at all. Matter of fact, for all the zealots, Wilson didn’t even write the lyrics, they were penned by TonyAsher (the guy who penned jingles for Barbie dolls, Max Factor cosmetics and Gallo wine), freeing Brian to concentrate on the music, so please, explain how well crafted this record was as a contextual whole. Of course praise and adulation should be expressed for the harmonic arrangements, as well as the vocal arrangements, to those I can find no fault. But … and there’s always a but, I doubt that anyone considering this record has listened to it in its original mono version, after all, mono is how Brian Wilson heard, so the technical advancements of stereo, reprocessing, remastering, surround sound and spacial distribution are all tricks of the speaker trade and have nothing at all to do with this record. So, if you wanna talk to me about Pet Sounds, you better be holding a weathered mono copy in your hand, and don’t try to pull a fast on me, only one of those new mono recordings were taken from the original master tapes.You want me to heap praise? Here goes … Both recorded and released in 1966, this record evolves endlessly with each listen, perhaps the first record to be considered a concept, from beginning to end listeners are immersed in an intense linear personal vision arranged around the vagaries of love affairs, the painful introverted anxieties that are the gut wrenching precipitates of the unstable chemistry for most all emotional relationships, where this trenchant ebbing cycle of love songs blisters forth infused with the impact of a shatteringly evocative novel. What, you didn’t know all that? So if you want to impress me with facts about this Beach Boy album that isn’t, ‘less of course you’re smart enough to know that Brian Wilson was the Beach Boys, you’ll certainly know that Dennis was the only member to play on any song, and that was “That’s Not Me,” Carl Wilson’s guitar work on “That’s Not Me” and “God Only Knows” were both overdubbed. And of course everyone knows that that weird chatter in the background of “Here Today” was not a mystical message, it was Bruce Johnston having a conversation about cameras. Not counting members of The Beach Boys, in one form or another, there were no less than 62 musicians who had major roles in the production of Pet Sounds, so if in any stretch of the imagination, you can seriously look me in the eye and claim without a sly smile inching across your face that this is a Beach Boy album, then I’ll tell you that I own the stained glass featured on the jacket of Wild Honey, and I’m willing to let you have it at a bargain price.Yes, it’s a good record, but it’s not the Holy Grail or some missing link, nor does it deserve the reverence that surrounds it. If it did, Wilson would have created an endless string of them, but he didn’t, because it just was what it was at that moment in time back in1966, competing with those four lads from Liverpool.Review by Jenell Kesler

This here must be the US version while the other the UK/Europe one. You’re right. And also, I add european edition is made in The Netherlands. It’s 180 gram vinyl.

26 october 2018 reissue yellow/green vinyl - Beach Boys "Pet sounds" is a 180 grams vinyl.Erroneously advertised as 130g at*/Limited-Edition/Pet-Sounds-Exclusive-Green-Yellow-Split/5U8X0ASG000 - where the description appears to have been copied/pasted from the earlier US green/yellow reissue.

My copy came scuffed, I'm assuming this was caused by the rigid paper sleeve. As a result, there is a noticeable amount of surface noise that is not present on my stereo copy, which is also a reissue. I've noticed that a few others have had the same problem.

AbstractWax 45RPM is just louder most likely. Turn up the volume on the 33 and its the same. Yeah, you have no idea what you're talking about. "The higher rotation speed of 45 RPM allows for a wider frequency response, and the larger available surface area allows for less compression of any signals with a wide amplitude. Bass is an example of a wide amplitude signal that sounds better on 45. Overtones and high treble are also better." If the 33 format is limited by the music sure. This is an old and short album, you can get the same effect by just cutting a bit quieter. Engineers like Gray and Hoffman would not limit the sound of this on 33.

This UK pressing has the most horrible wonky and out of phase sound I never heard of this recording. As I understand this is duophonic fake stereo version folded to mono.
Well it's good that you saved some people of the hassle of buying it then wanting a US mono instead. Haha it's very odd that they didn't just use a copy of the original US mono master tape.

Hey all, I'm having trouble figuring out which pressing I have, hoping someone might have some insight. It's Duophonic stereo, catalog number DT 2458, has a "3" next to the RIAA logo on the lower right corner of back cover. But here's the thing: I can't find the matrix/runouts in the listings here. Side A is DT-1-2458 A11 and side B is DT-1-2458 A11. The A11 thing makes had me looking somewhere in between the LA pressings but I could find the A11 thing anywhere else. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Question: I've got an original 1966 dutch press in a 1966 made in u.s.a. sleeve. Was it originally released like this? catalog number on both sleeve and label is: T 2458
The sound is very "thin". I would not recommend unless you are a "completest". I have now read reviews that suggest that earlier versions sound much better.
This record is most definitely in stereo I don't know how some can say It's mono. Same problem with adhesive on Wouldn't It be nice, other than that this record sound great.

Only "Wouldn't it Be Nice" is re-chanelled for stereo on this edition - the rest of the album is mono, despite the seeve claiming otherwise.

This doesn't happen on my copy. It does have its own quirk however : the dogs at the very end are cut off very abruptly.
Yes. Sounds like the mastering engineer pressed the play button on the tape machine half a second or so too late.
2 Copies - Both Skipped.I was very excited to receive this pressing when The Sound of Vinyl recently ran a $5 off coupon. The first copy I received had a TERRIBLE skip on the first track of Side A and a tick at one of the Yellow-Green interfaces all the way through Side A.I contacted the Sound of Vinyl and they refunded me and worked with me to get a second discounted copy sent out since the coupon had expired. The second copy skips on the first track of Side A just like the first one! I'm assuming this is a pressing issue.
I just picked this pressing up at Wal-Mart, which is not where I generally go for high quality vinyl. For $20, I expected to get a passable but flawed record in extremely bare-bones packaging. I was right about the latter: it's a hefty record and a plain paper inner sleeve housed inside a pretty standard lightweight cardboard outer sleeve with the original artwork. Seriously, Capitol, you couldn't have dropped just a little bit of coin on making this a nice package for fans to pick up? We're talking about one of the most famous and influential albums of all time, after all.I was so wrong about the record itself, though. Maybe I just got lucky. The edges aren't sharp, it's clean as a whistle, and as flat as Kansas. It's dead quiet and crystal clear with no skips or imperfections. If I'd paid $100 for an original 1966 pressing and it sounded like this, I'd be thrilled. Of course, this is the stereo mix. It wasn't available in '66, nor is it what Brian Wilson was going for. Nonetheless, it sounds amazing.Judging from the other comments on this release, you're probably rolling the dice if you buy it. I'm just here to let you know that there is a chance that you'll get a really great copy of Pet Sounds. If you can find it in a record store where they'll let you listen to it before purchasing, do that.
Add me to the list of people who are disappointed in the quality of this pressing. Full of dust right out of the sleeve, took me an hour of cleaning just to get the noise floor down to a somewhat acceptable level. At least my copy wasn't warped, lopsided, or razor edged I guess. Getting really tired of companies sacrificing quality control to increase profit - if they keep it up, the modern vinyl resurgence will end just as quickly as it started.
Awful pressing quality, mine had a smudge of dirt across the entirety of Wouldn’t It Be Nice, causing a loud crackle periodically. Other than that though, it’s a really good sounding version of the album.
To create the stereo mix of Pet Sounds I needed to manually sync two and sometimes three original multi-track analog tapes for each song. The original recording process in 1966 was to dub from machine to machine in order to open up tracks for doing overdubs. Pet Sounds' basic tracks were all done on 1/2" four track with the band being spread out over three of those tracks with the fourth containing a rough mono mix used for monitoring the session. This fourth track was used for the first vocal pass on some of the songs. The one exception on the tracking dates was "Sloop John B" the oldest recording, which was tracked to 1/2" three track. For half of the album, Brian mixed the backing track to mono onto one track of a second four track leaving three tracks for vocals, and that tape would be mixed to mono for the finished record. On the rest of the tracks, he took the tapes to CBS studios which at the time had the only 8 track 1" machine in LA. There he dubbed the track down to mono on one track of the 8 track and used the remaining tracks for vocals. The 8 track would then be mixed to mono for the finished record.So in order to have anything but a mono backing track for the stereo mix these different tapes needed to be manually synced to create a new multi-track master with all of the recorded elements in their original undubbed form. To do this in 1996 I used the then state of the art Sony digital multi-track machines running at 48k/ 16 bit. I began by transferring the original 3 or 4 track backing track, and then using the mono mix on the vocal tape(s) as a guide adjusted the speed of those tapes as they were transferred until I could get the two backing tracks (3 track and mono) to stay in sync for at least 30 seconds. Once I found this speed I would transfer the entire vocal multi-track and then dubbing between two digital machines further adjust the sync so that the vocals remained in sync throughout each song. The result was an 8 to 10 track master that could be used for the mix.The mix was done analog through an API console as well as an original Universal Audio tube console that had been used for many original Beach Boys recordings. The completed stereo mix was recorded on 1/4" analog tape running at 15 ips with Dolby SR noise reduction, and it is these analog mixes that have been used for all the stereo releases of Pet Sounds.

No way in hell this is Stereo. I have Capitols new Stereo version and while it's amazingly different and cool this most Definately is MONO! Unbelievable mix! Incredible bass and straight from tape sound. I've never heard it sound better....not original Mono lp, CD, Gold CD, Pet Sounds Box which is thought was the best in a recent comparo. This is UN-Real! But it's mono not what sleeve and write up claims...and as it should be! The only negative, like my recent Stereo copy is Capitol's vinyl exhibits between track surface. This one better but still there!! My God!!!! The bass!!!!!! Incredible!!!
This record is most definitely in stereo I think you have set your system to mono ;-)Same problem with side A track 1. There is some adhesive which is unremovable.
Got my copy, sounds great but it's more of a light orange than yellow.
My copy is pressed slightly off-center, but doesn't seem to audibly affect play.

Ridiculously good!!!! Have the QRP mono and love it, but have to give this stereo 45rpm the crown. Hair raising experience that no fan should pass up.
I have the 50th Anniversary issue which sounds pretty good on my system, not a top level hi fi but all quality makes, I'm wondering how much better this remaster might sound, given that to import it from the US would cost me around $85 all told. Kevin Gray is usually excellent, but it's a lot of money. I would spend it though if I thought the difference was immediately noticeable.
The copy I have has a really rough edge with fly aways hanging off of it. This thing sounds great but skipped right out of the packaging. there are a few divots & bumps that may be the issue, it could just be sloppy pressing. Also it's warped. I'd avise against this pressing.
I don't know if it's amazon but I've gone through 2 copies with a decent warp. Gonna go for the 200g one.

After hearing the 50th anniversary reissue, I would now have to say that this does sound a bit muffled and tin-like in comparison.
Wow, this sounds unbelievable. The most "alive" sounding Pet Sounds I've heard. I also have the mono by Analogue Productions and, while very faithful to the original mix, it just sounds way less clear and open. I think this has to do with the bouncing of tracks that Brian used to make the original mono mix. The stereo goes back to earlier tapes (before they were bounced). Just feels way closer to being in the studio.
I've been collecting records for over 40 years and I love this reissue. Guess I'm in the minority. For someone that can't afford a $50+ copy, it's fine to my ears and I use a Shure N97XE on a BIC TT.
Both the back of the album cover and the record labels mention '1972' as the year of this US reissue
Yes, as you can see in the notes: "This album was previously released as part of a two record set titled Pet Sounds/Carl And The Passions - So Tough. This record is pressed in monophonic sound, the way Brian cut it." And that two record set was released in 1972. Probably they reissued that edition in 1974 without "Carl, passions". Same artwork, same 1972 annotation.
Though I don't have other versions to compare to, this version sounds really good on its own. Very spacious and rich sounding.
I'll never need another version beyond this. It's pretty much perfect. Finally.

This pressing sounds very full and lively. The instruments are bold and stand out and the vocal harmonies actually have space to open up. I think it sounds good and rich textured and the orchestration of different sounds is very pleasing. Great reissue.

"Duophonic" is a weaker pressing than the 1st Mono because the sound engineers took "Sound" from a mono master recording and split it into 2 channels causing a "fake mock stereo" effect. Stereo sound was still in its development back in 1966. It wasnt till probably a few years later where true stereo sound was "perfected" for the home audio.....
My pressing is missing "Sloop John B"--it's on the track listing but not on the record.
Same as mine AKMoose.. Not sure what happened there. Maybe more than one edition of this release.

A nice sounding repress of the one of "the" albums of the 60's, but as other reviewers have pointed it it is slightly noisy in places. Overall I'm quite happy with the SQ, but would like to conduct a comparison with the latest Analogue Productions presses. This version is very nicely packaged though, with the coloured vinyl and gatefold.

The coolest part of this issue, is that there is a "50th Anniversary in Mono" sticker on the front. It's a borderline collector's item, but good lord, it's cheesy. The vinyl is really sharp on the edges, the center label is all scratched/torn up looking, and it sounds pretty mediocre (digitally sourced). It's on an OK piece of vinyl, but the flimsy "dime-a dozen" paper sleeve is not good. I'm with the others; get the Analogue Productions version. Listening to it as I type this. It sounds FANTASTIC, even on a semi-crappy Sony LX-250h,
It is not sourced from digital. The mastering is the same as the one used in the 1972 Carl & The Passions Pet Sounds pressing.

This pressing of Pet Sounds is outstanding. A week before, I purchased the UME "50th Anniversary" pressing, and I was completely unsatisfied with that one. With that aside, this Pet Sounds is the real deal. Beautiful cover, nice inner sleeve, solid disc.. And most of all, it sounds amazing. It feels "Stereo" - but is definitely mono. Please, buy this one, instead of the digitally-sourced ones you can get at the record shops. It's worth the extra money! Can't wait to play this on my soon-to-be restored Pioneer PL-5 with Ortofon cartridge. Currently playing it on a stock Sony LX-250h.
Im sure this doesn't compare at all the the AP pressing. That pressing is mastered so fantastically. I'd say bust out the big bucks to get that one.
This version sounds fantastic on my rather average stereo set up!
My copy of this pressing sounds very good. It still sounds like Pet Sounds, which is too drenched in reverb for my taste, but the instruments really breathe which is so important with it's instrumentation. The low end is as full as I've ever heard before too.

Really nice pressing! Quite happy with it, though there is a little bit of surface noise here and there, but overall it sounds great!
So how does this pressing sound, vs the Analogue Productions version?
I'm not sure where this was pressed, but the edge is wildly inconsistent. One side of the rim is semi-flat, while the other side is very sharp. Had to clean it, as it looked like they dipped it in confectioner's sugar, but afterward it sounds good.
Any ideas on the total quantity pressed for this release?
Pet Sounds deserves a serious listening. It may not be meaning much to an occasional listener, for the same reason as it was a commercial failure when released aack then. But listening to it in the proper mood, maybe knowing the background and the genius behind it, makes it outbreak as the masterpiece it is. The stereo mix is absolutely the one to pick, the mono mix may be more true to the original plan, but sounds vintage and packed, while the stereo version is much more lively.

It doesn't sound as good as my Analogue Productions copy, or my green label mono, but it'll certainly do. Pick it up if you find it for a reasonable price.
IMHO it sounds very good but I have no other version to compare.
For a 50th anniversary edition, you would think there would be a little more fanfare for this release, especially in the packaging. Instead, we are given the bare bones with duplicated original artwork for the front and back cover as well a sticker on the outside plastic marking the half century passing of time. Not sure what I was expecting, but an informative inner about the importance of this album would have been a nice addition. Instead, we are given only a very thick record (which doesn't equate to better quality) protected by a cheap paper inner sleeve. Still, the pressing is dead quiet, perfectly centered (which seems like a major challenge for modern pressings), and sounds quiet nice. So on that, recommended.
I feel your pain. One of the most heralded albums in the last decade and it gets treated like a Spin Doctors release. It does sound very good though!

Just picked up my first time ever true STEREO 50th anniversary vinyl copy and it is flawless!!!100% worth the 50 year wait Mark has done an amazing mix rich crisp deep and aliveThe press done by Sony/Artone Holland is also 100% flawless a joy to play and own HQ polyliner thick card sleeve with thick spine. the vinyl is to die for and rainbow labels and text excellent.Only a couple of disappointments!1. Bar Code on the sleeve (a removable sticker would have been better) at least it's small and out the way on the bottom2. The 50th Sticker attached to the cling wrap does NOT peel off.3. An inner booklet with recording notes etc would not have gone a missThe big no no is the limited edition repro Holland EMI-Capitol 7" of God Only Knows/Wouldn't It Be Nice in yellow vinyl that has come out as a tie in/teaser 45 and is discounted when bought with the vinyl album.1. The mono tie-in single is a yellow vinyl re-pro of the EMI-Capitol Italian pressing and sleeve hence the vile labels Capitol Dome/Logo at 9 O'Clock and the crazy LH die-cut. The EMI-Capitol Holland pressings were as per the UK ones and yes with 4 prong Dinked OC (optional centres)
The 5.1 mix is atrocious. A completely disjointed mess. Don't bother getting it for that.

Sounds absolutely amazing. Jaw dropped when I first played this.
There is quite a bit of cracking and popping with this pressing. At first I thought it was just static, but even after I've eliminated that the surface noise persists. It may also just wear quickly as the first few plays actually rang clear as a bell! That being said, the surface noise does not compete with the music and the mastering seems great, whether or not it may be pressed from digital or analog. All levels are crisp top to bottom. I suppose to some it may be lacking in depth compared to some versions.

Thanks for the link to the article! It really puts the mono and stereo mixes in perspective. I've always felt the Stereo mix sounded better, and to me this quote from the article sums it up "The most important difference in the stereo mix is the mix is two to four generations closer to the original sessions than the mono mix created in 1966 from dubs of the original sessions."
I think there's too much sentimentality around mono mixes. Yes, Brian Wilson mixed Pet Sounds to mono only in 1966. He used the best technology of the time but created so many mix-downs during the final mix that it has a very muddy clarity to it. The stereo mix was done from all the session tapes (four tracks for the backing and eight tracks for the vocals) in the late 1990s and its stunning. How anyone can argue that the mono mix is better is really beyond me. The stereo mix brings the album to life and allows all the parts room to breathe.
You're missing the point. Please learn about this very issue's re-mixing and mastering process before criticising it.

Believe the hype. I've got a clean 72 Carl and the Passions pressing, and a 2008 mono reissue, and this smokes both of them. Obviously your mileage will vary, but on a Rega RP6 with a DV-20X2, it sounds beautiful. The bass isn't overdone, it's just a lovely warm presence. The packaging is also lovely, which helps.
Couldn't agree more. This is now the best-sounding LP I own. Sounds amazing on my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. I'll be selling my current copy of PS and keeping this one!
The packaging alone may be worth the price tag. Bass feels exaggerated at first, but then you get used to it (also would recommend listening to this in a large room if possible). I wouldn't say this is the best ever version, but it offers a different experience from past versions on vinyl and CD that were also excellent
It is very nice for a single pocket jacket. Heavy stock and laminated and it recreates the original with the pasted back...nice!

The packaging is great, the vinyl seems great as well. Having never heard the original and not owning it in other formats, I have nothing to compare it to. I just received this as a xMas gift and was very disappointed with the sound. I have never heard a LP sound so thin. It seemed like I was listening through a tunnel a mile away.Now I grew up listening to vinyl and I would have returned this one.
This might be the best version of Pet Sounds ever released. It's certainly miles better than the original pressings and the most recent reissues (Capitol 180g, 40th Anniversary). It seems like its only real competitors are the 70s Brother pressings and the DCC Hoffman-mastered vinyl. Those Brother pressings can be tough to find in good condition and the DCC goes for a lot of money these days. I haven't heard the DCC, but I really doubt it's worth $100 more than this pressing.The Analogue Productions release of Pet Sounds in mono is fantastic. The artwork is very sharp, the packaging doesn't feel cheap, and the vinyl is nice and weighty. I heard absolutely no surface noise on my copy. The album sounds incredible. Pick this up before it goes out of print and starts to fetch a lot of money. You won't regret it.
The 180gram is digital sourced so this is surprising.
I just got this and am disappointed with the sound quality. The instruments sound muddled. That said I do not have a Mono cart right now so perhaps that has something to do with it. the 180g version I also purchased sounds much better IMO.

It is worth noting that the way Brian created the album in '66 was to bounce tapes as dubs. This makes the stereo far truer to the sound information on the tapes.He recorded in 4-track, and bounced that (for half of the album) to one track of a second four-track for vocal overdubs by the Beach Boys. He then mixed those to mono. For the other half of the album, he bounced the first 4-track tapes again to a 1" 8-track machine at CBS in LA and did the final mixdown to mono.The benefit is that the stereo mix is anywhere from two to four generations closer to the original multitracks of the sessions.Mark Linnett and many others argue this more than compensates for the digital sampling done at 16/48.
I have to agree. It seems to give it more dimension.
The first time I fell in love with Pet Sounds was with the stereo mix, back in 1999, and no matter how many times I listen to the mono mix, trying to dig it, I still prefer stereo! I KNOW THIS IS SACRILEGE. There are plenty of albums which I prefer in mono, but I really believe the instrumentation in Pet Sounds benefits from a stereo soundstage. There is so much going on in those arrangements, and the stereo mix is just richer, to my ear. I know these are fightin' words, but everyone take comfort in the fact that I am surely a bit sentimental concerning this issue; the summer of '99 and Pet Sounds and my first true love are all wrapped up in my memory, so of course I prefer the record as I first heard it, right?

I wonder if this release will include the 2000 remaster of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" with Mike Love on the bridge. The original stereo vinyl from the 90s has Brian's vocal from the 1996 remaster. If someone who plans on getting this could let me know when it's released it'd be much appreciated.
It has Mike on the bridge. It sounds like they dropped in that section of the mono mix, because the melody jumps from the right channel to the center and it sounds slightly out of sync with the rest of the music for a moment.
The one with Brian on the bridge is only on nineties CD and vinyl pressings. These have been really strict about matching the original albums so I am 99.99 percent sure it will be Mike. The first vinyl issue in stereo was the Brian take.
Strange reissue of an iconic release - wonder why they retitled it and put a really average picture of the band on the front?
It’s simply a budget label and would be a money saving exercise.
Part of the Music for Pleasure strategy seems to have been reissuing great releases in terrible packaging for pedestrian audiences.

An interesting Spectoresque, Progressive, Psychedelic, Baroque Pop album. I guess it really evades being tied down to any genre. Sounds a bit dated now, but it's certainly an important and influential milestone in the history of music.
the only thing that might sound dated is the lyrics...and that's arguable. Other than that it's timeless

It's a Scranton so-That last part of the run out indicates the mastering-run and the sets of stampers that were used- When you see F and G, that would indicate the disk is from the 1st batches of mono records...
I have this version but instead of red vinyl it is a black vinyl version. Besides that all seems to be the same. Taiwanese unofficial version.

These other brown cover versions did not exist in the cogs when I added this to my collection only this one. Thanks all.

Your version says 'Stereo" but in fact should be actual 'Mono'. Look for a statement somewhere on the cover indicating that it is 'mono as Brian intended it".

The first stereo version of pet sounds was made in the 90's. Before that, only mono and duophonic versions were available. You probably have this misprint version
The packaging is seriously cool! Exact replica of the original, including the ads for other 60s Capitol releases on the inner sleeve. The sound is good, maybe not as "full" as the original pressing but definitely better sounding than CD or digital.
I think this re-issue sounds great too. I only have the CD to compare it to. I will keep my eye out for the 1980 green Capitol and Carl & the Passions version from the early 70's. For now, this one will do. To me, it has a nice soundstage with a very prominent and clear bottom end.

My copy don't has the capitol rainbow label. The labels are black with silver writings.Otherwise it seems exactly the same.
Sound decent to me. Unless you want to drop major coin on a OG copy. I know this is one of the best albums of all time and I'd love to own the original. I will keep looking for one a thrift stores and maybe one day I will get lucky.

Original pressings of this album are actually notoriously bad, Capitol was known for ruining their records (sound quality wise) back then.Still, I'd pick one up either way, it's a piece of history.

The audiophile nature of this release is controversial. It is stated on the disc that it was created from the "original stereo tapes by Brian Wilson and Mark Linett". Not only are there NO original stereo tapes, Brian is deaf in one ear and therefore could not have contributed to a Stereo mix. It has been admitted by Mark Linett himself that this release (as well as the HDTracks one) was created from a reel tape copy of his 16-bit 48kHz 1996 Stereo Mix. Why would you want a DSD SACD created from what is essentially a generation older version of the 1996 CD?! I'm sure MFSL were not aware of this when they created the SACD copy from the tape, but still. This release is bogus.
Id say the mfsl is my favorite. Although the Analouge Productions is great too, for both mono & stereo. Then mono my vote goes to dcc or audio fidelity. The greenline / 1990 mono cd sounds good as well. Really there are just too many remasters for this one album.
At least it still has amazing sound. No one needs 24 bit to appreciate a good master.

For the time being, no. At the very least, this version does lack any dynamic range compression that was present on the 1996/2001 CDs. As for the 'analogue productions' release - that is from the same reel-to-reel tape copy of the digital mix as this release! Grab the mono release from them if you want a true analogue release.

At first I listened to this with headphones and wasn't sure about the sound. But after giving it more listens and on speakers, it sounds great.Definitely the best Pet Sounds will sound on vinyl at this price and point (unless you wanna spend a lot more money)
Cut from Digital - great packaging, lousy sound!
Acoustic sounds say on their website : "Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, most from the original master tapes or best sources available". It means that it could be sourced from analog or digital...
Analogue Productions is reissuing The Beach Boys LPs and they are shipping in early 2015. I'm going to get that copy of Pet Sounds in mono for $30. It's on 200 gram vinyl and has been remastered from the best possible analog tape (some albums use the original and some use the best possible source). I'm also going to order The Beach Boys Today! and Smiley Smile. They are for sale at Acoustic Sounds dot com. Their shipping is expensive but it's free over $89 so I try to buy a few records to receive free shipping via Fed-X ground in the US.
I've read really mixed stuff about this reissue.Some people say it sounds great, and then others (like you) say it sounds "lousy".What exactly makes it lousy, and what pressing should I get instead? (that's not expensive as hell)

Listening to the sound of the stereoalbum of this package it sounds very good to me although it hasn't got the extreme sparkle of some older (sixties, seventies) pressings of other beach boys albums i have. The main thing which bothers me is that the pressing seems/sounds very thin. I mean there is a constant rotating crack. In other words the vinyl isn't silent at all. And that would be the extra thing they should have done on such a re-release.Although I like this one I will go on searching for a copy from the 60/70's which replies to my expectations.

not 100% sure about this release here in the UK are the tracks 100% full and genuine stereo mixes or is this the USA Duophonic pap released in the UK as alleged stereo ???????? The front of the alleged stereo remaster EMS 1179 is exactly the same as this in stating "Stereo" yet it is sadly 100% mono so this original 1966 release needs to be checked and confirmed as to it's actual mix.
Any "Stereo" release BEFORE 1996 is duophonic.
Please be aware that sadly this alleged true stereo re-master is in fact another re-release of the wonderful and powerful 100% MONO mix......Tip..... Avoid! The only thing remastered is the sleeve with thin gloss card and of course that other wonderful and vital item on sleeve and label artworks of the 1990's+ the barcode Please note that image displayed is not for this actual release, the sleeve for thiis alleged stereo mix version states Stereo on the front top right hand corner and naturally on the labels too.
