The group's main catalogue songs released between 1962 and 1970 consists of 213 songs four of which exist in different versions: 188 originals and 25 covers. Since their break-up, over 100 more songs by the group have been officially released, which include live songs the group never recorded in the studio and numerous outtakes. The Beatles early releases were on the Vee-Jay, Swan and Tollie labels, before EMIs US counterpart, Capitol, sat up and took notice. Unfortunately for The Beatles, Capitol often insisted in dropping certain tracks, reassembling running orders and constructing new releases by economic and judicious use of the songs that were coming from London. The Capitol albums also contained a handful of alternative mixes and instrumental tracks not available anywhere else. Some of these are available on the Capitol Albums volumes, and are worth investigating for anyone interested in variations in tracklis. Though wedged between the comparatively giant Sgt. Pepper’s and 1968’s White Album, Magical Mystery Tour nevertheless played a part in The Beatles' story, and put a cap on a year in which the band made yet more music nobody was totally prepared for them to make. The album was released as a companion to a meandering, band-directed movie, and its first half is probably one of the lowest-stakes sides in the band’s catalog—a relief, in a way, from how high-stakes their music had become. Still, this was The Beatles in 1967—momentum was strong. What had started out as a string of acid playground rhymes turned into Lennon’s angriest song this side of 1970 (“I Am the Walrus”), while McCartney’s simple sentimentality had taken on a quality that felt stoic, almost abstract (“The Fool on the Hill”). There was a rare instrumental (“Flying”), a foggy Harrison drone (“Blue Jay Way”), and an invocation of the past by McCartney that blurred lines between sweet and eerie (“Your Mother Should Know”). While the band had helped rechristen the album format as an artistic statement unto itself, they were still releasing singles—as in tracks that weren’t associated with any album. Designed primarily as a consumer service, the second half of Magical Mystery Tour collected what they’d offered in 1967. The yin-yang of McCartney’s “Penny Lane” and Lennon’s “Strawberry Fields Forever” (originally released on the same 7-inch record) arguably says more about what ground the band covered in seven minutes than any other two songs in their catalog—the former baroque, charming, and upbeat; the latter dense and melancholy—variations on a theme of seemingly simple pasts refracted, dreamlike, through the present. And if “I Am the Walrus” was Lennon’s dark foray into contradiction and surreality, McCartney’s “Hello, Goodbye” was its bright counterpart. “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” probably doesn’t get the credit it deserves. “All You Need Is Love,” debuted to an estimated 400 million people in the world’s first live international satellite TV production (Our World), did receive wide acclaim, and while cynicism and embarrassment about 1967’s Summer of Love would set in as soon as a few years later, it probably deserves more. As for the movie that gave the album its name, press coverage of it was so uniformly hostile (not to mention viewer feedback to the BBC switchboard so sustained) that McCartney went on the BBC the day after it first aired to defuse the tension. Asked why he thought people didn’t like it, McCartney said he wasn’t sure—he liked it fine.

Hype about this version is warranted. I have the US version of the same year. Not even close, the German version sounds so much better.
Exellent
Without a doubt THE pressing to own of this album! To my ears, it has more stereo separation than any of the U.S. pressings I own of this album. The bass-lines hit harder as well, which is perfect for some of the great playing McCartney brings to this record. Worth owning if you can track one down!

I picked up a few of these Mono releases in 2015/2016 when they were still in stores. I think I even got some discounted with coupons. Can't believe the prices now! Wish I bought an extra of this, Sgt Pepper and Revolver. At least I have one of each. :)

It's a real shame it is so frustrating to hear The Beatles MMT in mono the way it was intended. The stereo versions are in my opinion a disgraceful representation of the bands music. With the mono production, you can hear their legacy. This release is a super high quality package. Strong material binds the pages together to the gatefold doors. The record is kept in a polylined inner sleeve, just to add to the high quality care this release has been given. This is as good as it gets, the rest is for you to decide if the cost these go for now is worth it.

Are these 2010's reissues in true stereo? Please if anyone knows help :)

"Penny Lane" sounds like a mock stereo version on this pressing. What do you think ? Anyone ?

I've obtained two separate copies of this now from Amazon and both were badly warped. They played, but I'm not paying full retail for a warped record. Nothing special from I heard either. Sticking to my German copy.

Seriously nothing special about this pressing. Picked this up a couple days ago and it's full of staticky noise and vocal distortion, even after a good cleaning. The mono reissues definitely seemed to have received better care than these stereo ones.

MrShocktime Seriously nothing special about this pressing. Picked this up a couple days ago and it's full of staticky noise and vocal distortion, even after a good cleaning. The mono reissues definitely seemed to have received better care than these stereo ones. The quality control on these US-pressed 2012 reissues flat-out sucked. No, worse than that. It's the worst pressing disaster in the 70+ year history of the long-playing record - period. Even the worst of cheap oil crisis pressings from '73-74 are like MoFi Supervinyl in comparison. My Abbey Road is even lower than just "garbage". Side 1 is so carelessly pressed & plated that it really sounds like a worn out copy being scraped away with a steel-needle gramophone. That is EXACTLY what it sounds like - nothing else. It's nauseating and cringeworthy. It's the worst record pressing I own from any country, old or new - in a collection of about 5,000 records. To add insult to injury, THOUSANDS of copies of Abbey Road we're just like mine - that same awful pressing/plating aberration that renders it as good as a flat frisbee. It's one thing to have one defective copy. But how could they let THOUSANDS slip through the cracks like that? ????Rainbo Records shot themselves in the foot big-time, and while they have improved since then, this cardinal sin will never be forgiven. If you want a decent version of the 2012 stereo reissues, check out the Euro pressings, which are made in Germany by Optimal Media - same plant that made the mono reissues. Or, even better, you can check out one of the numerous vintage releases around - as absurd as it sounds, I'm fairly happy with my 1967 stereo Canadian Capitol copy of MMT, even with all the Duophonic processed tracks and stuff.I've read very nice things about the German HörZu.

During the big Beatles sales push by E.M.I. in 1976 after their contract expired, this LP was given a proper official release on the Parlophone label with a catalogue number of PCTC 255 (although the cassette was TC-PCS 3077!) BUT inexplicably this first official OFFICIAL release was NOT advertised in any way.(Can anyone from E.M.I. out there reading this offer an explanation ?!)Consequently, the only U.K. issue of this album failed to chart. It should also be noted that this 1976 edition used the same masters as the original U.S. release, and therefore some tracks were still in mono ... BUT ... another bizarre E.M.I. move ... the cassette DID have "Baby. You're A Rich Man" in stereo. In 1978 a "gold" vinyl edition was released.(source: http://www.jpgr.co.uk/pctc255.html)

What is this about "fake stereo" for some tracks? "This U.S. version of Magical Mystery Tour officially was released in the United Kingdom on 19 November 1976. When the album was issued in Britain, EMI did a straight pressing from the American album, The left much to be desired as three of the tracks, “Penny Lane”, “Baby You’re A Rich Man” and “All You Need Is Love”, are in fake stereo."source:http://thebeatles-collection.com/wordpress/2012/12/01/magical-mystery-tour-parlophone-pctc-255/

A pretty good pressing of the album. Does not suffer from the extreme highs and rolled off low end of a lot of Japanese masters. Plus you get the advantage of the trademark quiet vinyl. Comes with nice packaging and a bonus lyric sheet for the side B tracks.Keep in mind that it's a 1969 pressing. This is BEFORE the stereo mixes to some of the B-side tracks were made available (that wouldn't be until 1971 when EMI did the first true stereo mixes for the German release (see - The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Plus Other Songs ). These tracks are: "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", "All You Need Is Love" (which had a stereo mix for The Beatles - Yellow Submarine) and "Baby, You're A Rich Man". This means, you get the infamous Duophonic processing from the original US release where the mono single mixes were used with "fake stereo" processing added to make the tracks seem "wider".

I've only ever read bad reviews of these 90s pressings. People saying: avoid! They're horrible! Sound is shit! However, after finding a sealed new copy in my record store I have to staunchly disagree. A little back history about this record: it was pressed from remastered audio originally created for CD versions in the 80s, so it comes from digital masters. While it may not sound as good as an original mono it certainly does not sound bad at all (I think this remaster actually contains the true stereo mixes). As a matter of fact the sound pours from my speakers gloriously filling the room. The drums are super punchy and the bass sounds pretty bold throughout most of the record. The vocals could sound a little compressed on some tracks but it in no way distracts from an enjoyable listening experience and overall, it's a very full sounding record. The clarity and separation must be praised here because the music sounds crystal clear and very defined and there is excellent stereo separation. The sound is very detailed and I appreciate that. It seems that the mastering varies a bit, some tracks sound better than others but the background is dead silent so the finer moments are given room to breath and expand. While I can understand this version might not offer more sonically than the CD version, the remastering is skillfully done and it sounds better than most digital sourced reissues I have heard and there is a nice warmth to the music. This does not sound thin by any means. Besides the occasional compression on the vocals (the vocals actually sound pretty bad on I Am The Walrus) I would say this is not a bad sounding reissue. Strawberry Fields sounds absolutely amazing but the bass on Penny Lane is a bit overblown, so it's a trade off song to song. There are definitely better sounding versions but if you have a decent system this will make for an enjoyable listen. The pressing quality is also very good. Every record I have from Specialty Records Corporation is flat and centered with not the faintest hint of any surface noise, also comes in an anti-static sleeve. I would say 7/10 soundwise.

Also, the U.K. original version has the parlophone label, not apple.

The UK version it's based on is 2 singles (6 songs total). It's the one case where the North American version of a Beatles album is considered the definitive one instead of the UK version.

One of my favourite Beatles albums, even though its a compilation. I like the quirkiness, and the tracks blend well together.

As good as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was, Magical Mystery Tour was the album I wanted to hear coming on the heels of “Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane.”Magical Mystery Tour had substance to it, there was a palatable thickness to the music, floating in on a fog from some ethereal space, and laying across me like a warm blanket. The album was calm and assured, psychedelic and adventurous, with songs that made sense to me in a surrealistic way. This release often becomes lost in the history of The Beatles, coming out right after Sgt. Pepper and right before The White Album ... but that fact wasn’t lost on me, as I draped multi coloured scarves over my bedroom lamps, burned a bit of incense, and tripped out to the four luscious posters of The Beatles that had just hit the head shops. Right from the get go, the first track sets the mood ... rushes of noise, brass instruments, swirling, turning, undulating, and drawing me in like I was about to set foot inside the most wonderful circus ever conceived, “Roll up for the mystery tour.” “Fool On The Hill” seems simple enough at face value, but on deeper inspection there are a whole host of things moving, if not out right lurking just below the surface, and in a most unexpected manner gives way to “Flying.” Now “Flying” has to be one of the most haunting songs of all time, an instant classic of immeasurable magnitude with its spaced out atmospheric effects, layerings, and physical presence. From there the music gets expensive and dark ... and a bit paranoid with “Blue Jay Way.” The rest of the album rolls along at a steady pace, both holding your attention, and allowing you to drift off at the same time. This effect can be quite disturbing, it was for me, as I attempted to concentrate on the lyrics, only to be swept away at every turn by the changing chords. For me, this was The Beatles at their finest. Magical Mystery Tour was the culmination of all The Beatles would ever be. This was their high water mark, this was the high water mark of the psychedelic 60’s, before the wave that changed so much across this planet washed back into space and time ... but before it did, the wave lifted The Beatles high, and if you look with just the right eyes, at just the right angle, on any given summer night, you can see this high water mark. And perhaps if you tune your ears, you may capture a spark of what for a brief moment burned like a shooting star for a whole generation.Review by Jenell Kesler

This version is the closest to the one I have, but there are differences.Matrix / Runout (Side A Runout Etched): SMAL-1-2835-B-2:Matrix / Runout (Side B Runout Etched): SMAL-2-2835-A-28∴For side A, it appears that the letters A and L have S and T written over them. Side B does not have this issue. Both sides have the ✻ symbol, which as far as I can tell, normally indicates that a Beatles record was pressed in the Los Angeles Capitol facility. This copy is from my dad's collection, and all his other Beatles records also seem to come from LA (which makes sense, given that he was living in the Bay Area).I hope these matrix numbers help out someone else looking for their particular copy.

I have a copy of this album that seems virtually identical; the only difference is that on the label for side one, the songs all have ASCAP next to them instead of BMI. Note: This "EMI Toshiba Apple label" pressing from 1969 was sadly also was pressed with metals shipped by the USA EMI Capitol originators the original SMAL matrix confirms the 3 mono fake stereo Capitol Duophonic tracks on the B side! Absolutely vile, pointless and a waste of pelletsThe hastily compiled Duophonic tracks, because Capitol could not wait for George Martin's first time stereo mixed masters from Abbey Road, Hello Goodbye, Penny Lane and Baby You're A Rich Man were not replaced USA wise until the USA CD release came out, as for Japan this would have been the same! Once these tampered with tracks have been heard, you never want to hear them again, (Penny Lane got it's first true stereo release, USA wise on the 1973 Alan Klein 'blue' 1967-1970 authorised compilation a long and needless 6 year wait!) Even more crazy is the USA Mobile Fidelity half speed re-master vinyl pressing, inspite of being advised by George Martin not to use the Capitol vinyl master tapes, but the later shipped Cassette master tapes that had all the tracks in true stereo, they went ahead and mastered and released their "high end" pressing with those fake stereo Duophonic mono tracks, what was the point. The 2017 DeAgnostini collector's release of the USA MMT album is the ONLY version to buy1. It's has the full Abbey Road digital remastered tracks in true stereo approved by Calderstone/Apple2. reproduces the original USA Capitol "rainbow" labels which is both the originators original and correct label for this USA compiled 12" album version. The only original all stereo tracks versions of the USA compilation were1. The German Hor-Zu -Apple release Vinyl, Cassette and 8-Track (tapes were not originally Dolby B encoded- hiss world)2. The UK EMI-Parlophone Cassette release (the only drawback being Dolby B encoded tapes from EMI did not surface till 1976!)When EMI-Toshiba Japan finally corrected this for their release of this compiled album is anyone's guess, after all with EMI it was always about the P.

Just picked up the +C/+C pressing and it is so fine! I had the 1977 Apple/EMI 1C 072-04 449 which I believe is said to be similar to the 1973 HOR ZU pressings (and the 1973 Apple/EMI Electrola 1C 072-04 449) but is was as others have described, quite bright and a bit fatiguing. The +C/+C is so smooth with excellent strong bass and very nice highs. Glad I got "the one".

In 2014, they released 180g versions of everything up to Revolver. Sgt. Pepper on seems to have been released in 2012 from remaster. The early albums (I have Please Please Me, Beatles For Sale, and Revolver of the set) sound fantastic. I love listening to them, so much so that I've considered recording them to digital because Spotify uses the 2009 stereo remasters.

Finally getting around to opening mine (Got it a few months ago as a gift, but yes, one that I really wanted). I was on a hiatus from playing records and didn't want to break the seal on the plastic of this one, but now that I'm back on the vinyl tit so to speak, I GOTTA' open this one. It has the book inside, so I'll probably remove the plastic and cut around the big white sticker on the front and save it (I need more plastic others... I'm completely-out, and this record will need one for sure).I already have Pepper, AHDN, and Mono Masters, each of them gifts, as my family knows I'm after these, but I still plan on working my way through the UK mono lot (I think I may grab the stereo "Magical Mystery Tour" as well, even though it's digital. I have an original US stereo 1st pressing, but it's seen better days and is getting awfully noisy. But I love the wide sound of the old mono Beatles pressings of the '60's. I have an original Capitol "Meet The Beatles", which has such a sound, and that's what I wanted with these new ones. But the new mono pressings throw in the kind of dynamics and clarity that US Beatles fans of the '60's never dreamed of, so now it's just a matter of matching them up with the right cartridge that will extract all of that while still retaining that old-school sound (I won't be spending much time with the Jico SAS stylus on these... More-like an original Shure Hi-Track or something along those lines... The SAS is not what I would call an "old-school" sound). One more thing, but this is about the Beatles in general. I can't listen to the intro of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" without hearing Clarence (ousted 5th Beatle member.. sax player) goin' "Yeeah! ... Yeeah! ... Huh!! ... Come on, y'all!"... right before the lyrics come in. https://vimeo.com/8904532

Wow . They really did nail this one. Best one I've heard so far. I heard rumors of this title being a particular standout, but now I hear what people were talking about. That first side is epic. I wish they did something like this for "Hey Jude" (albeit in stereo of course). They're probably my favorite two Beatles albums at this point (Maybe the stereo HJ vinyl reissue is really good... That would be pretty-epic too).

On the original SMAL 2835 Capitol 1967 Stereo release the terrible "duophonic" process was appearently used for "Penny Lane", "Baby You're A Rich Man" and "All You Need Is Love"....What a shame on such a good album. These three songs actually sound awfully on this release, especially "All You Need...", which is in my opinion one of the absolutely very best Beatles' titles. Such a pity!!

First, it got a different cover than the covers that were pressed in the US and europe. It isn't a gatefold cover, the front is green and a bold EMI logo printed on it! The back cover is unique to Israel only with a black & white picture of The Beatles from the MMT movie. Second, only in Israel and only the first edition of this great album was pressed with a unique and beautiful, almost impossible to find, lyric and illustrated inner sleeve. On the front inner sleeve there is a list of all the songs, a black & white picture of The Beatls from the MMT movie, a message to the fans: "AWAY IN THE SKY, beyond the clouds, live 4 or 5 Magicians..." and an illustration of the fab four. On the back inner sleeve there are the words of all the show songs. Although this lp has yellow Parlophone labels it got an American Capitol catalogue number: SMAL 2835! Please notice: This Israeli lp is mentioned in Hans Pokora "Rare Record Cover Book" on page 31.Please notice: This Album contains a mega rare inner sleeve that was printed only in Israel and only with the first pressing of this great album.first Israel Pressing,

I read a lot of hype about this version, and after being disappointed with the original US version and reissues (including stereo and mono reissues), I acquired one of these. Definitely lives up to the hype! Amazing, wide stereo sound. One of my favorite Beatles pressings.

To sebviper: Magical Mystery Tour was originally released in the UK as a double EP, in a gatefold sleeve with a booklet, in 1967. Parlophone is/was a division of EMI.

Unusually this 8 track uses the 'German' stereo master tape. The record version issued by World Record Club, used Capitol stampers with fake stereo b side, however a master tape was obtained by EMI Aust, and this tape was used for the Cassette, 8 Track and Reel to Reel versions released through the club.Bruce Hamlin

As with "Pepper", this Mono remaster is the "Be All and End All", the 2012 Stereo mix is dead on arrival when compared. The music, with all of it’s cool psychedelic phasing effects, litterally drip off the record and out of your speakers on the Mono mix. On the tepid Stereo mix, well, the record plays, but there isn’t much life to it; vocals on "Blue Jay Way", "Strawberry Fields", & "Baby You're A Rich Man" are all too low in the mix. Oddly, the Stereo album has a one dimensional feeling as opposed to the very lively, colorful, and balanced Mono version, which is ironic, but hey, it was the 60's, Stereo was in it's infancy and hadn't quite taken the lead as the dominating listening format yet, the attention was indeed still on creating the Mono mix. Even when “M.M.T” saw a 2012 Special Edition Box Set, it was re-released in Mono only-telling.

I have this version, and it does have the inner booklet. And import sticker to front

As good as ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was, ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ was the album I wanted to hear coming on the heals of “Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane.”‘Magical Mystery Tour’ had substance to it, there was a palatable thickness to the music, floating in on a fog from some ethereal space, and laying across me like a warm blanket. The album was calm and assured, psychedelic and adventurous, with songs that made sense to me in a surrealistic way. This release often becomes lost in the history of The Beatles, coming out right after ‘Sgt. Pepper’ and right before ‘The White Album’ ... but that fact wasn’t lost on me, as I draped multi coloured scarves over my bedroom lamps, burned a bit of incense, and tripped out to the four luscious posters of The Beatles that had just hit the head shops. ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ was the culmination of all The Beatles would ever be.

Anyone have some distortion / sibilance through the 2nd half of Your Mother Should Know?
Kamuro
So I know this is an old comment, but I'll answer in case anyone else is wondering. That sound is a quirk of the mono version. I'm not sure exactly what happened there but I have the US Capitol Mono LP, the original UK mono EP, and the 2009 mono CD and all of them have that weird sound you're talking about.
Ustamya
I'm getting some distortion on the vocals in the chorus of Baby You're a Rich Man. Can't recall if this is at all deliberate.
Hugifyn
This is easily my favourite Beatles album, their only album I want to listen to all the way through. Side-A is the sound track to the film, it flows really well and Side-B is that year's singles, that also fit together really well. The result is an album that was very Mode de Jour but that has also stood the test of time.

A different copy with blue label and EMI / Parlophone logo does exists (not like in picture). the rest is the same as described in this issue ( Italy, 1977; label code: 3C 064-04449; gatefold sleeve featuring 24 page booklet; Rights Society: S.I.A.E.; Matrix / Runout (Runout Side A): 04449-A - 3-2-77 I --- Matrix / Runout (Runout Side B): 04449-B - 3-2-77 I).

Can someone check and confirm the actual now sonics of the 3 David Dexter duophonic fake stereo casualties that should now be in George Martin's wide and true stereo mixes. In fact the whole album should now be Dexter tamper-free with no extra EQ , wonderful in the bathroom echo etc etc.It is just obsered that the USA Mobile Fidelity 1/2 speed HQ re-master and very VERY expensive limited edition actually remastered all the David Dexter tamperings and the 3 Mono altered Duophonic fake stereo tracks that Capitol could not wait for George Martin to ship true stereo mixes off. Penny Lane was still the Dexter Durophonic fake stereo mix on the USA Capitol originated 1966 - 1970 "Blue" Beatles Compilation. George Martin supervised the UK originated master tape compilation all tracks were the original and true UK wide stereo mixes. Penny Lane having been originally stereo mixed for the Germany Hor Zu 12" album release and the UK Cassette release of the Capitol USA album.George Martin did warn Mobile Fidelity to request the lease of the UK Stereo Cassette Album master tapes and not use anything from Capitol and their 1967 abortion though local as they were.

Have you heard to stereo 2009 remaster (LP)? Was curious if the mono mix bettered it.

I guess for this issue Capitol masters were used, last 3 tracks of side B are in fake stereo (and the effect is neither subtle).

The edition that I have is the Capital label 2835 on the spine and inside cover. The labels are Capitol black with rainbow ring but with Thinner lettering and "Produced in England by George Martin" on two lines. Side 1 runout is SMAL-1-2835-B-2 with the AL written over ST. It reads as if the original number was ST-1-2835-B-2 but the SMAL was added over it with slightly lighter hand. Same on the B side except the ST is not quite as noticeable. The B side runout is SMAL-2-2835-B-4. Both sides have stamped 1 and star in the dead wax. Hope this may help those trying to figure out if their pressing matches one of the 161 listed.
Burirus
I've been searching along to find my own, I see the 1 stamp and the little star in the dead space and the same runout numbers, except there is no SMAL before them, but glad I read your post and noted the star! Kind of cool, too.

This is the only version that I see that has Produced by George Martin on two lines on the label. I think that this is the original style label. The runout on mine has SMAL with the AL written over ST.

This is the closest version I can find to mine, but etched into the runout I have SMAL-1-2835-P1 #2 (side 1) SMAL-2-2835-P1 (side 2).

The UK finally gets what EMI UK should have released way way back in 1976 and using the UK cassette master tapes and not the 1967 USA Capitol master tape with their Duophonic horrors of Penny Lane All You Need is Love Baby Your a Rich Man the proper full stereo compilation that was was mixed and done in 1971 for Germany release. If you want a UK Parlophone vinyl edition of this amazing great compilation this is the only version to seek and buy where every track is in full stereo.
Malien
Hi, I have been given this edition from an uncle, but there is no picture book inside, as the cover says... I wonder if my uncle lost it or it was not included in this vinyl. Can you help me on this? Thanks a lot

Beggaring belief this should never have come out EMI UK were still using their 1976 stampers with the flawed and vile 3 Duophonic (Fake Stereo tracks) Mixed and cut by Capitol USA from their at the time, 1967, held mono singles tapes. This is just EMI doing what it did at the time taking no care, cost cutting, and ripping the record buyer off.George Martin's full stereo master tapes done and mixed for the 1971 Germany EMI-Electrola Apple-Hor Zu and later used for the UK Cassette version of this compilation. Should have been pulled from the tape store, then re-cut and a new metal made for side 2 at the very least and the original with the Duophonics removed and destroyed. Not too much to ask to put things right or just stay quiet of the vile sonics on side two!
Rexfire
Again this pressing still uses the flawed 1967 Capitol master tapes with the 3 Duophonic (Fake Stereo) tracksI Am The Walrus (part of) Penny Lane: All You Need Is Love Baby Your A Rich Man avoid The tracks sound vile!
Shakar
Sadly this needless disaster and accident that should never have happened is an absolute waste of vinyl time and your moneyIt's only minimal value is as a limited edition curio.Sonically sadly it is flawed. MF used Capitol's 1967 master tapes and these included 3 vile and needless Duophonic (Fake Stereo) tracks Capitol created in-house from the Mono singles tapes that George Martin had previously sent. (Capitol in their ha$te to make a few extra dollar$ could not wait for Martin to ship the proper and full stereo mixes that had been done by his team in 1971 for EMI-Electrola Germany for their own release of this compiled album on Apple-Hor Zu.Who so ever at MF clearly did not do through research or did the people at the tower why? Instead we are left with a very expensive but seriously flawed and waste of money album with I am The Walrus ( part of): Penny Lane,: All You Need Is Love: and Baby I'm A Rich Man in Duophonic (ie Fake Stereo and additional reverb and compression)Buyer beware!
Beazezius
The MFSL cassette version is a TOTALLY different animal! They did get the right tapes for that edition, and I had it as a kid, and wore it out. Metal tape. It sounded amazing!
Via
Please note that this Orlake yellow vinyl pressing , like the EMI carbon black vinyl pressing from 1976 (the first UK release of this Capitol USA compiled gem) sadly and needlessly still has the 3 vile Duophonic tracks Capitol mixed from their held mono singles tapes. The album was on general sale in the UK copies were exported to Capitol for sale in the USA as limited edition coloured vinyl pressings.

This is the prized edition of Magical Mystery Tour. Stereo mixes of Penny Lane, Baby You're A Rich Man & All You Need Is Love and a new stereo mix of Strawberry Fields Forever prepared by George Martin especially for this release. Generally regarded as the best pressing of this material in stereo.http://www.yokono.co.uk/collection/beatles/germany/lp/ger_lp_horzu_st1.html##5-1

It's not that bad! It's not as amazingly good as some of the others MoFi records. But when comparing to the other made up stereo record (the old Capitol), it's much more details and the instruments operating in their own sphere and not mixed together. But knowing what Groovemaster over here tells us, it just hints of a realy amazing record we could have had. I have especialy enjoyed "Baby you're a rich man". It's a totaly other song on this record. Worth the money (£50,-)? Offcause!

Guess I've been lucky. I've purchased many of those 2012 repressings in 2018, and outside of some distortion on Please Please Me (the song on the album), I've been pleased. No bodily fluids to be seen.

The label as shown here states "A subsidiary of Capitol Records" and was issued in 1968. The 1967 Capitol black colorband label does not have those words.

It was a copy of this version of MMT that made me a Beatle fan. I was just 5 or 6 years old. My sister gave me a couple of her old records that she didn't care for anymore. This copy of MMT looks horrible now, it's scratched to death, I "added" my own artwork with crayons. This all sounds horrible but I know collect and do my best to preserve my Beatles records so maybe it was worth the sacrifice of one actually two records to me the way I am today.
Kanek
Does this mean that "this" remaster no longer carries the awful Duophonic mixes on the B side and all 5 tracks are now presented in their proper and true stereo mixes can anyone confirm officially and or sonically
Buzalas
All tracks are stereo and sounds great.I can recommend this version.
Ericaz
Since this uses the same masters as the 1987 CD, all of the tracks are in stereo.

Please note that the coloured vinyl pressing as shown here is not a bulk standard EMI one but a typical Orlake from Dagenham Essex.Note the rough labels and the odd contour rings from the stamper hubs.(Orlake pressed the Pink vinyl Rolling Stones Miss You 12"s for EMI also about this time!Orlake specialised in coloured vinyl’s and 10" pressings and clearly EMI did not want to have to free up any of their presses to do coloured vinyl runs at the time and found Orlake were viable and could press these for EMI
Dagdalas
The sound quality of my yellow vinyl export copy at least is pretty bad, 1/4 of the way in on each side, so I know it's probably the fault of the vinyl. It makes sense that this was not pressed at EMI because EMIs product in general was usually solid. Partial blame is the tape of a tape copy from Capitol USA, instead of using EMI masters. Better sound quality for these selections can be found as a whole for the same amount of money elsewhere.

I have a copy of The Beatles "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR LP VINYL SMAL 2835 rainbow band capitol label" That has TYPE inside of the rainbow band, And all kinds of engraving numbers on the band just next to the Rainbow Band on the Album. My Brother recently passed away, and left me a Bealtles album collection that consisted of 8-Albums, This one has a One-Thousand-Dollar price tag on it, and seemed to be purchased back in 1987, or so the sticker on it says, Plus there was no-book issued with this Album. Can anyone out there tell me anything about this particular Album?? I have looked at over 100 different albums of the exact same kind, and release, But not-1 had the TYPE in the Rainbow Circle, Or the Engravings, And these engravings are NOT done by hand, You can tell they were Machined into the Album. Anyways, any help would be GREATLY - APPRECIATED!!!!!! THNAKS, ;) Gumbo-King

AVOID and save your money! This (what should have been an outstanding sonic gem) is THE ultimate rip-off gaff ever!!MF were supplied with and used the Capitol Duophoniced mono tracks master tapes that they had ripped the USA off with from day one of the well thought out project because they could not wait for the stereo mixes and masters to be sent by George Martin from the UK Hello Goodbye is the ONLY true stereo track on side two. All that effort and cutting technology down the pan because of shoddy and rubbish corner-cutting by CapitolSay no more! Just avoid or listen and laugh and then cry because you paid out!

On reading books by George Martin and known facts George M. contacted MFSL when it was made known that they wanted to remaster this album. he made them well aware of what Capitol had in master tapes and he advised them to use the UK Cassette tape master tape or the German Hor Zu vinyl master tape as these master tapes both had the true stereo mixes of all 5 B side tracks. That USA Capitol had so messed up.The master engineer at MFSL didn't listen and mastered a Duophonic nightmare B side what planet did he come from.Penny Lane remained USA MONO and Fake Stereo (Duophonic) until 1973 and the 1966 1970 Alan Klein 'Blue' compilation came along thats 6 long and needless years! Would not give you $1 for it. you could have the flawless 2017 Stereo remix record store day single of St Fields and Penny Lane, or indeed the new 2016 remastred stereo album!

What has happened to the master releases of the original UK MMT 1967 Mono and the original 1967 SMMT Stereo Magical Mystery Tour Double EP and booklet? Both of these listing were previously on the data-base. i just found a copy of this at a flea market this past weekend.the seller labeled the record as being an original 1967 pressing:| it is marked SMAL2835,it has an orange Capitol label with the 1967 'nems enterprises ltd' copyright on the front, bottom right of the front cover.the disc is in very good to excellent condition.the booklet is a bit beat up--it has come undone from the binding/staples,but otherwise in very good condition.the record itself sounds very clean and clear~very good sound.i have not heard this album in over 30 years in vinyl form.it seems to lack a bit of low-end compared to the new re-mastered CD version.still very good ,though:)

These release was issued at the 1980-82 same as in the several other European countries. Labels has a grammar mistaken in the "Magical Mistery Tour" title. Round label text tells: FABRICADO EM PORTUGAL SOB LICENÇĄ POR VALENTIM DE CAVALHO, C. I. S.A.R.L.

Based on this site, http://www.rarebeatles.com/photospg/mmtep.htm, I would guess this is the 1971 release.

If this LP has SMAL 2835 cat. number it isn't UK but US or Can issue. First 67 UK issue of MMTour was released in UK on EPs. If it's SMAL 2835 Parlophone it may be only Israel first 69 press.

This album was viewed as a 'rip off' because it contained previous singles already issued by Capitol. The original Parlophone release, a double EP, was a bit more honest, giving the british buyers only the songs from the Beatles' disastrous TV film. But ignoring the 'rip off quotient', this lp offers us McCartney's sublime "The Fool on the Hill", as well as Lennon's psychedelic classics "I Am the Walrus"and "Strawberry Fields". (These three songs beg for better videos than those supplied in the indulgent TV film.) Along with the still-irresistible "Penny Lane", Lennon's "Baby, You're a Rich Man" is an underrated little gem.The title track begins the album quite nicely with its catching pop melody. So much for the good. "Flying" is a lame instrumental that goes nowhere. "Your Mother Should Know" is McCartney nostalgia, a la "When I'm Sixty Four". Oddly, I am annoyed less by this musical piece than "When I'm Sixty Four" which still grates on me after all these years. Maybe it's the minor key."All You Need is Love" has always seemed to be more than what it was. A quaint little anthem from the sixties....period.George Harrison possibly delivers his worst song ever recorded under the Beatles' name. "Blue Jay Way" makes most funeral dirges sound carefree! Thoroughly unlistenable garbage that makes one pine for "It's All Too Much" from their "Yellow Submarine" album. So I look upon this Beatles' lp as half of a great album, which isn't bad considering the Beatles probably had nothing to do with putting this collection together. But the TV film was viewed as one of the group's first major failures. All was not well in Pepperland. I have viewed the film at least four times, and I find it hard going, even with such great Beatle music propelling it. The best part of the film is near the end when the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band performs "Death Cab For Cutie" with help from stripper Jan Carson.
Dordred
The rip off is not the concept album which is excellent but is in the side 2 sonics of Duophonic mixes of mono tracks because Capitol could not wait for the proper stereo master tapes Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields suffer the worst and Penny Lane did not get it's proper USA stereo release till the 1966 - 1970 (Blue album). 1. Avoid any USA and UK pressings of this album (the UK gaffingly used the Capitol master "vinyl" tape instead of the corrected and true stereo all tracks "cassette" master) Even the Mobile Fidelity half speed master edition used the same vile Duophonic master>>>>>>why?2. The only correct and safe vinyl release of all the tracks in true stereo is the German Hor Zu release.
Bloodhammer
Art is subjective...we will never agree. I can't say I actually 'pine' for 'It's All Too Much'. But at least it's upbeat and nostalgically hippy dippy. "Blue Jay Way" sounds like an extremely painful George Harrison bowel movement. But you like it. So what the hell.

So odd how people's taste can be matched yet vary wildly at the same time...You state quite categorically that you hate Blue Jay Way, while pining for It's All Too Much.Me? Blue Jay Way is my favourite Beatles song. And I love It's All Too Much.Go figure.

I enjoy this Album, end to end. Starting from a very early time in my life, I recall this LP, along with Abbey Road, the White Album, and Rubber Soul, being played from the moments I can remember as a baby/child. This album was scarier, but also intriguing, curious. The version I grew up listening to was Stereo, but recently I found a 1st Pressing, canada Mono copy. I have read , that MONO was the intended format for this LP soundtrack. Great! I can hear a distinct difference, as with the stereo, you got that 'rechanneled' sound. They call it Duophonic in canada. The only track I could do without, a million times over, is Penny Lane. Not really ever been a fan of this song. I Like McCartney songs, but mostly when he was on his own. It seems out of place too, but maybe flows with the movie, which I have never seen. The Canada Mono Package is deluxe. The Captiol label is very colorful, and the print is a nice slight embossed silver on black. The cover is a paste on slick, and the book inside is good quality thick paper, and good color retention. Like most copies, the book has come off the binding staple and now just floats, so I removed it and put in seperate sleeve. The Vinyl pressing is the thickest I have seen. Probably edging in at 220g. Quality would be equal to the England pressing. I'm not sure of mix though, as with some Canadian releases, especially the mono releases, the mixes are unique to region it was mastered and pressed. Have to investigate this. Canada's capitol rep, did the Beatles real good, for promotion and quality control; even my Mom's old 1964 battered copy of "twist and shout" plays loud after a million plays.! Can't say that for her early Rolling Stones Albums. !
