About Album

Disintegration is the eighth studio album by English rock band the Cure, released on 2 May 1989 by Fiction Records. The record marks a return to the introspective gothic rock style the band had established in the early 1980s. As he neared the age of 30, vocalist and guitarist Robert Smith had felt an increased pressure to follow up on the group's pop successes with a more enduring work. This, coupled with a distaste for the group's newfound popularity, caused Smith to lapse back into the use of. Disintegration - The Cure. The Cure - Disintegration - whole album live - into. The Cure. Unlike most Cure albums, Disintegration is a pre-conceived group of Smiths autobiographical songs that uniformly express one particular mood gloom, yet stopping just short of communicating total despair like Pornography and Faith. Originally conceived as an intentionally depressing, introspective solo project inspired by a fear of turning thirty years old, band leader Robert Smith eventually brought the songs to the band where it became somewhat a group effort. Thats the disintegration I mean. Disintegration is the eighth studio album by English alternative rock band The Cure, released on May 1, 1989. The record marks a return to the gloomy gothic rock style and introspective lyrics the band had established in the early 1980s, and is one of three quintessential Cure albums performed in entirety on the band's double live album, Trilogy. Arguably their flagship release, The Cures Disintegration sold over three million copies and raised the bands status from cult icons to stadium-filling superstars. Yet this landmark album emerged from a turbulent 12-month period during which frontman Robert Smith battled with depression and fired The Cures co-founder, Lol Tolhurst, from the band. I'm a 100% sure I have this MPO pressing, and I gotta said I'm quite disappointed. It's the only version of this record I own but if this is the good version I can't quite image how bad is GZ version (wait, I actually can). Anyways, it doesn't sound bad, it's heavily leaned towards the low ends and the bass can be quite overwhelming at times (which is fine) but my main issue is when volume is turned up to 50% plus an increasing distortion starts to ruin everything on the loud parts. Aside of that, the record was flat and silent with no surface noise. I'm going to try an OG version of this one to compare
Elizabeth
So how does it sound? Is the mastering any good or more loudness?
Dori
This is now reissued in a plastic box instead of carboard fold out box and is considerably less expensive. See recent listing.

My pressing of this album sounds great. Such a big sound.

Finally! After my severe disappointment with the quality of the 2010 US pressing I am relieved and elated to get a hold of this pressing. It sounds so much better. There is still a crispness to the mastering that gives away its digital nature, but it still sounds absolutely wonderful. Full of dynamics and the bass hits hard.Notes: the runout on my copy, Side A is stamped 19 144685, all other markers are the same as this listing. Maybe it was pressed in 2019? Also, purchased this from Amazon US in Feb, 2020 which was listed as the 2010 Europe pressing.

This pressing is very good and you can actually hear the seperation between the vocals and the instruments in the music. This pressing has a wider soundstage compared to the original. I'm glad I said no to the original pressing when it was presented to me for $60 in vg+ condition. I have no regrets now, in this case original is not all ways best.

WOW what a great pressing of this record, Holy Moly...unbelieveable. Super Quiet vinyl and a Beautiful sleeve and jacket to boot. If you're searching for this record this is the pressing to search out to be sure.

No words will ever describe the beauty and the importance of this album to so many (myself included). At the tender age of 13, what more was there but "Disintegration"? The Cure's album eighth deep into their (late) 80s career, rich with stylistic shifts that never harmed their innovative consistency. The album that still is just light years away from now. The majestic opening that is "Plainsong" is so mesmerising, that powerful hi-hat/stabbing keyboard riff pouring in, keeps sweeping anyone off their feet to start with... Thirty years on, I think I'm old (and it's so cold) - and when we'll all be long gone, this album's splendour will continue to shine on new generations in the manner of the greatest big bang.
Rias
The high-topped sneakered prophet of gloom, Robert Smith, opens the majestic atmospheric and expansive album Disintegration with the line, I think it’s dark and it looks like rain ...,” emblematic of all that The Cure have stood for.  While there are those who would have you consider that Disintegration is just more of the same, it took the apparent mildly light-hearted release of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, to bring about this monumental opus of minor keyed songs, songs laced with drowning images designed not so much to invade your dreams, but to invade your waking hours.  And to that end, The Cure managed to capture not only the essence and feel of impending doom and melancholy, but set it to verse, where the tunes are perhaps best sung on the bus while looking through smudged windows, or hummed while in class to ward off the boredom ... coalescing all of the rumors and majesty of this bewildering band into one crowning achievement that will never be equaled. All of the work by The Cure, and especially this release, were packaged and designed to be carried like shields, or banners of expression, as were the albums of Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jim Hendrix back in the hazy 60’s; where tribes were formed, with hair and music being the passkey.  You’ll find no angelic cries of exhalation here, nor will you find any hellish sustained misery either ... what you are treated to is the bleak angst that shrouded the 80’s and all of it’s excesses.  Disintegration can also be seen as a coming of age, or perhaps the end of an age album, though as I stood there in my mid 30’s, wrapped in my oversized coat and untied sneakers, feeling for all the world like I was yet again in the right place at the right time, I had the distinct feeling that I was perhaps a bit of a spy in the house of love, and that I should be letting a younger generation have their naive hazy hay-day of discovery.  Never the less, with perfect makeup and fashion to match, I danced into the wee hours of the morning like some proverbial ghost, haunting the side streets and after hours clubs. With all of this being said, Disintegration is all consuming in its sadness, longing, and emotional grandeur.  It’s far from a teenage album filled with whines and despair ... it’s an indulgence into the dark nether regions of our subconsciousness, formulated to challenge the nature of our being as we come face to face with all we thought we knew, with discovering the lies we’d held as fact [lies told to us, and lies we told to ourselves], finding that the only way to escaped the melancholy is to find the beauty within it, and once done, this soundtrack, or highway marker of sorts, gets shelved and nearly forgotten, until your hand stumbles over it, and a smile of satisfaction for those bygone days gently crease your face.*** The Fun Facts:  Riding on the success of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me there was both commercial and personal pressure placed on the band to deliver once again, yet as with many bands, this new found popularity had a destructive side, with Smith and other band members diving back into the use of hallucinogenic drugs which came to define this album.  The drug use was not used to present something more playful for the sake of listening, but rather elicited and brought out the more dark and foreboding personal side of Robert Smith and his uncomfortableness with success ... hence the album's title, with the band feeling that they were disintegrating back into their former selves.Review by Jenell Kesler

So... what made the highest selling copy of this album $143? Was it signed or something?
Styphe
Can confirm - Purchased/literally just received my import copy through Amazon US (prod code B00318EDCY) = still MPO pressing.
Kagrel
My copy sounds great. No noise, very quiet, no warping.
Paster
This copy sounds WORLDS better than the 2010 pressing, which it is otherwise identical to. There's basically no surface noise on this pressing, though there is a small pop over the intro to "Disintegration" which is also present on a friend's copy, so I assume it's on all of them. If you have the 2010 pressing, I highly recommend upgrading to this one. I ordered from Amazon US and received this pressing, so that's a pretty safe bet, since you can't tell the difference between this and the terrible 2010 pressing from the outside, only in the runout.
Querlaca
wow what a crazy sound !! one of the best records of my collection, super bass, super drums, clear and deep voice .. Great job of Robert Smith !!!
Not-the-Same
the textured sleeve has an all over but quite faint cobweb designI was expecting it to have a more heavily embossed feel to itbut it still looks cool. Does anyone know how many were pressed with thissleeve design?

I have bought a copy of this but... there's no "Fascination street" at the end of side A, the last song is "Lullaby"."Fascination street" is written on cover and label but it's NOT in the record.Plus, there is absolutely *nothing* written in the runout grooves. What is it? Maybe a counterfeit edition (but the sleeve and the labels seems original to me) or an early issue? :-?

Sorry, it is a counterfeit. I bought one too. https://www.discogs.com/The-Cure-Disintegration/release/14041077

One of those albums that didn't need to be messed with, period. The original 1989 mastering on compact disc is the definitive version. Mastered with wide dynamic range and plenty of headroom so it can be turned up loud as the booklet instructs. The 2010 remaster simply adds compression and boosted bass that does the music no favors - it just kills the spaciousness and atmosphere of the album. There isn't any good vinyl version either, so don't bother. The old pressings, even though they cut a couple tracks, were still compromised because they crammed too much music on each side and the 2010 and onward reissues use the crappy remaster as a source. Find any old pre-2010 CD if you want to hear the album properly.
Miromice
There are no "norms" with vinyl these days since quality of sources, cutting, and pressing run the gamut. There are very well done releases out there (a small minority) and loads of half-assed crap. The album didn't need to be remastered, period.
Kanek
2010 pressings use a less compressed source of the 2010 remaster (as is the norm for vinyl these days) and sounds fine. Have you listened to it on a good setup?

Soundwise, I'm happy with the quality of this 2010 RE 532 456-3. Highly recommended! Finally the sound of my youth on vinyl! I first got this on cassette tape way back 1989 when I was just 13 years old during those days–most of my friends were listening to hair-metal G'n'R & Metallica. I felt strange about myself feeling alone liking this music so much. This is how it means or resonates to me track by track: the majestic "Plainsong" sounds like a perfect wrecked-after-the-war-however-victorious soundtrack; "Closedown" picking up the pieces; "Love Song" strangely kind of out-of-place for this album yet it works; "Last Dance" is cinematic bittersweet romance; "Lullaby" darkest catchy pop tune ever!; "Fascination Street" for some strange reason gives me that "Alphabet City" vibe. "Prayers For Rain" like a non linear storyteller's technique of placing this track in the midst of this album–backward-relates well to "Closedown" to "Plainsong"; "Same Deep Water As You" is like a further dark & cold version of "Last Dance"; the epic "Disintegration" is the process where "Plainsong" emerged; "Homesick" being lost in nostalgia; "Untitled" a perfect closing track that seems to ease and wash away all the dread and gloom by embracing it as part of life; and strangely it sounds a bit a happy and satisfy to me. I have never forgotten about "Pictures of You" though it was a hit and of a good song, I felt a bit strange that this must be my least fave track in this album. To me it is a perfect single and could be a nice song to be further articulated with more supporting songs into another great album. Though it's not perfect, this is my fave Cure album of all time.

Wish I'd done my research before buying this. The noise issues are present in my copy, and both LPs are warped. I've heard rumors that the EU pressings are flawless, so I'll be grabbing one to see if there's any improvement. Such a waste.

Has anyone had any luck ordering a copy of this MPO pressing from an online retailer, either in the US or UK? If so, please post where you got it! Would like to upgrade from the GZ pressing. Thanks!

Just arrived from Amazon DE and I also received the MPO pressing like the user below. Wax is unusually clean straight out the sleeve. Can't wait to give it a spin.
Unereel
Can confirm that the copy I ordered last week from Amazon Germany is an MPO pressing. Looks immaculate. Bought it to replace my Rainbo pressing from 2010, and am extremely glad I did.
Dainris
This pressing quality is immaculate! Very rare these days to hear a noise floor this silent. As for the mastering, it is extremely bass-centric. My bass knob is flat, and I had to turn the treble on my amp waaaay up to almost 10 to get a nice top end to the music (which is rare.) But once that was done it sounded even & altogether fantastic!
Frey
This pressing has an atrocious sound quality. the surface noise this remaster has on the ENTIRE album is nothing short of sinful which is dissapointing because this is in my top three favorite records ever made.
Laizel
Echoing what everyone else has said- this is simply the best way to experience one of the greatest albums of all time
I'm a Russian Occupant
Looks like I'm totally buying this for "Pirate Ships". Such a great song, so damn hard to find. Amazon still has a couple copies for less than anyone is asking here, by the way. Happy hunting.
lacki
Rainbo pressing, side B my favorite side, had noise start to finish! The rest was not so bad but a new record should not have this level of surface noise.
Gholbirius
My US/Rhino pressing is crap. Very audible and persistent surface noise through all of sides B and D. There's also a fair amount of random popping and ticking throughout, and both records were pressed off center. I don't know if UK pressings are any better, but I would avoid this one.
Global Progression
im happy with my album, i was a little afraid about the noise level that everybody comments, it was a good surprise that my copy dosent have this problem except in the "D side", that have noticieable hight level noise.... but very happy whit the sound in side A, B, C
Landamath
TRULY a disappointing pressing. I wish I had read these comments before buying this. The comments about noise are totally correct - one of the worst sounding pressings for a great album I've heard. Such a bummer, especially given the authority of this edition given by those involved. AVOID if you don't want crackles, pops, and general noise crowding out some of your favorite songs. Especially frustrating, given that what's underneath the noise sounds really good....
Feri
OK, vinyl purists. This is a prime example of where the CD is a better sounding and more complete version of this album. This pressing on a single disc is over an hour long, which goes beyond "maxed out" for how much music a single-disc record should carry. 50 minutes is pushing it. Over an hour, you get the picture. Quality dips, and this vinyl version omits two songs! I get it. I like vinyl, too, but it's not always the correct choice.
Giamah
This vinyl press blows away the cd and any cd of this that I have heard. The cd is muddy and there is no separation. Wrong
Cyregaehus
I own both the original CD and vinyl versions of this album and can confirm the vinyl sounds far superior to the CD. My copy sounds nearly perfect. The quality never dips despite the huge amount of media on it. It's a bummer that Homesick and Last Dance aren't included, but the album is phenomenal anyways. If you can find an original press of this album, buy it!
Haracetys
Just picked this up. Mine has same runout as listed here, but KEV is etched in Side B and Side C. Same pressing as everyone elses ? Made in US.
Scoreboard Bleeding
Add another comment that this MPO pressing is very good!My only gripe is actually with the sleeve art; the contrast has clearly been pushed far too far, a lot of the detail evident on the original sleeve is largely turned to black. But in terms of the (digital) remaster and the pressing, no complaints :)Perhaps for next year's 30th year anniversary we'll get a proper, all-analogue Abbey Road half-speed cut from the original tapes for our trouble, but that's wishlist stuff ;)

EDIT: THIS PRESSING IS GARBAGE.Read the reviews here, and of the company RAINBLO RECORDS who pressed this first.https://www.discogs.com/label/100643-Rainbo-RecordsIf this is the only way you can listen to this album, then maybe buy this pressing. Otherwise, Spotify this album and avoid RAINBO Records pressings. SIMPLY TERRIBLE. Yes, such a great album but what a sad pressing by which to honor this amazing record. Dynamics aside, this physical pressing is letting me down. I can hear the noise everywhere. Side b Lovesong and Last Dance, horrific. FUCK the pressing company who pressed this. Fine, make it a 2 disc set, which it should be, get the fans to buy a "nice" reissue and then fuck it up with a shitty press that has noise throughout? shame fucking shame. So pissed. Fascination Street just came on and I can hear the friggin' surface noise act as a counter point. THIS IS NOT WHY WE BUY VINYL PRESSINGS. God am I pissed b/c I love this song. If you can't hear the noise, good on you, but I bought this to hear a pristine, vinyl, warm, awesome version of one of my favorite songs and man am I disappointed.
Tuliancel
Such a great album. This is the first The Cure vinyl I've bought. It's a shame that it was pressed at Rainbo. I've never had a good pressing from there. But all in all, I can't complain. It's a classic and I have a feeling it will be on heavy rotation for a long time.
Phenade
lots of surface noise... music sounds good though. Little disappointed but thats the game! The packaging is nice, overall glad to own it.
Joony
Has anyone out there encountered the same problem I've had with the 2010 Reissue? Omg I've tried 3 copies all of which have been returned thank goodness because at least here in Canada they are very expensive selling for around $50 New Sealed. The songs are clear and bright but the surface noise is unbearable right from the drop of the needle. The Rabbit is eating away destroying the beautiful songs before in-between and during most. Rhino reissue so not to surprised but for such a great Cure album not in my collection am super disappointed. Also Discogs is saying that there was a 2016 Reissue but is it? All the local record stores when searching to order brings up the 2010 version only in stock to purchase and am not going to do that again.
Mitynarit
The 2016 Universal/Polydor reissue is sold in the European market only, so getting a chance at a decent pressing means you have to find a seller in the EU who can export it for you.All the copies I've seen at record stores in the US and Canada... they're the 2010 Rhino pressing, which is unfortunately the victim of Rainbo Records' wonky quality control. It is unlikely that a local Canadian store would have the 2016 pressing - which again is EU-only. Given the many reported cases of undue surface noise on the 2010 Rhino version including yours, I'd agree they are waaaaay overpriced for what they are. Thank goodness I've never gambled to try one.

I have both the 1989 original vinyl and cd (a few different pressings of each format) as well as the 2010 remastered on vinyl and cd (deluxe). I’m probably an outlier here but I prefer the original 1989 mix on cd. I used to think the original mix was too muddy and dull even when played loudly. BUT that was because my ears were too accustomed to loud heavy on the low end mixes from the mid 90s to present day. Disintegration is a desert island album for me so with the release of the 2010 remaster with all 12 songs across 2 discs, I couldn’t wait. The original ‘89 vinyl sounds really good considering its length for 1 disc but corners were cut to make it work. The 2010 reissue on vinyl is absolutely what to get if you want it on wax. Great pressing. Sounds fantastic. I’ve already burned through a couple copies. So why do I ultimately prefer the original 1989 cd? Keep in mind it was released when cds were the preferred format by record labels...you know the history. Basically when Disintegration was released it was intended to be heard on cd (digitally) even though it was recorded and mixed on tape. The 2 “bonus tracks” were just a marketing gimmick to buy the cd. (Such a shame to the vinyl version but oh well). Now the original cd master...because of the flaws related to its vinyl companion, the cd is the closest we have to what Robert, the band, and the producers and engineers intended the project to sound like. The 2010 remaster cd helped me understand that. With a nice pair of headphones and a decent CD player (or a nice dedicated dac when playing ripped files), I think you’ll understand there’s a lot of magic deep in the mix that the 2010 remaster overshadows with extra bass and volume. It’s easy to find a used ‘89 cd for $5 more or less vs $40+ for an original clean vinyl. Can’t go wrong.
Purestone
None of the Cure remasters sound any better than the old Elektra or Fiction CDs, full stop. All they do is add a different EQ and some compression, neither of which was necessary. The only reason to buy them at all is for the bonus material, or because you want to support the band by purchasing an extra copy of an album you already have. Maybe one day we'll get high quality DYNAMIC, un-futzed remasters from a label like MOFI or Intervention but I wouldn't hold your breath for that.
Nanecele
My GZ Media Pressing sounds excellent and was not dirty from the factory.
Porgisk
Is there any way to differentiate this pressing vs. the GZ on sealed copies? In the US there's no way to know which edition you're ordering, and there are no open copies for sale anywhere. I don't want to get caught with another crappy GZ pressing of this album....
Qucid
How are you able to differentiate this pressing with the 2010 one? Can't find it anywhere on the packaging what company pressed the copy I have (which should be the MPO one)
Marilace
The 2018 version has the MPO logo and Cat No. stamped as well as etched. 2010 version is just etched
Arar
Check the runout of your copy. There should be written MPO.

Well, after the release of the double LP, which includes all the songs of the album, this version is to be kept for sentimental reasons only.'Homesick' and 'Last Dance' give a whole new dimension to the experience and the quality is far better than the original, which despite the 25+ minutes for each side, it sounded very good.
Legend 33
Excellent, at last we can enjoy this album with the full playlist on vinyl

I own seven different pressings from the original to the last remastered and this one is the best sounding I've heard by far.

This is the copy you want, if you can find a NM one. I can tell you that it's worth what ever you're willing to pay for it. Sound is brilliant!

Aha! So that’s what this album ‘should’ sound like! I’d always felt a bit underwhelmed by the original UK press (and I have several copies) in terms of balance and sonics. I have only just opened my copy of this 2010 repress (after reading through these reviews). I was lucky. Vinyl is immaculate, no marks, warps or defects. Play back is incredible, a few pops but that’s all. I’m playing it very loud (no neighbours!) and it’s absolutely majestic. Worth it for the intro to Prayers for Rain alone which I’ve replayed quite a few times now. Mine has GZ in the dead wax for reference. It seems a bit of a gamble on this press but if you get lucky with the pressing you won’t be disappointed!
Heraly
After I opened my sealed copy I was a bit disappointed. It was dirty!! but after a clean it sounds great. No warps, no clicks, no pops no surface noise. Really nice pressing

This is a great sounding record and pressing, 2010. A must for any Cure fan.

Honestly, I think this one sounds excellent... I can't compare it to other pressings, but I love the way this one sounds, has a good amount of dynamics and depth for my tastes!
BOND
Snap, crackle, pop!!The music sounds good, especially turned up, but it's apparent it was mastered from a digital source and the record is pretty noisy, lots of pops plus side two of my copy is off-center. First time I've had to deal with this, I scraped some of the spindle off and made a mark so that I can center the record. The wow/flutter was real bad on Fascination Street. Disappointing that one of my favorite albums of all time is pressed so poorly. If I can find another copy in person and listen before buying I'd consider purchasing. Maybe sometime down the road they'll do a proper analogue master with some quality control on manufacturing.

Maybe sometime down the road they'll do a proper analogue master with some quality control on manufacturing. This version is pressed by the rightfully ill-reputed Rainbo Records pressing plant. Easily one of the most (if not THE most period) unreliable vinyl manufacturers out there - they completely and utterly butchered the 2012 Beatles Abbey Road reissue to incomprehensibly astronomical degrees, and it still stands as the worst new vinyl pressing I've ever owned. Side one on my Abbey Road is unacceptably noisy and there is so much non-stop non-fill (not just in the vinyl but maybe even in the metalwork) that it sounds like a worn-out copy being played on a steel-needle gramophone. What an embarrassment. I try to avoid Rainbo-pressed variants whenever possible, unless they're the only option or the mastering is known to be better than on other pressings. Mind you, they are perfectly capable of pressing clean and quiet records, and a lot of my Rainbo pressings are free of flaws (other than the occasional off-center grooves), but the Beatles example and one other defective Rainbo record I own are more than enough to make me cautious about their quality control.
TheSuspect
Much better and cleaner sounding than the GZ pressing, highly recommended if you want this remaster with clean vinyl.
Thordigda
Mine 2010 Pressing is very good (flat and quiet) and the Sound is excellent like the other Fiction Records (Back to Black, Numbered, Coloured Vinyl, 2012/2013). I bought also The 2016 "Kiss Me ..." Version and this was a terrible Pressing (warped) and the Sound was not as Good as the GZ Pressing from 2013.
Gri
Everywhere ive looked only has the 2010 RM. Does this 2016 release really exist????
Elastic Skunk
This should have been a double album, a great shame that ace tracks like "Last Dance" and "Homesick" were not included on the original vinyl issue.
Ximinon
For the version pressed by MPO i created a new release here The Cure - Disintegration
Nahn
Surprised by all these negative comments on this one. My copy of this is one of the best sounding records I have in my collection. Fantastic clarity & dynamics, plays perfectly on my Debut Carbon but can also say this played perfectly on a lower quality player (TEAC MC-D800).
Уou ll never walk alone
Yep MPO runouts here, great news! I thought the GZ pressing was filthy, marked and had a lot of surface noise. Really enjoying this new pressing done right!
showtime
Sounds like the CD, which shouldn't be surprising. I guess I was hoping against hope that Bob knew what he was doing by remastering this digitally before having it pressed to vinyl. Oh well. Sounds nice, but it's missing the depth and warmth good vinyl pressings have. Still, glad to have it and I'll certainly play it plenty.
Globus
So I have a copy of this LP with runouts Side A: 3 20 A (letter lying sideways) 1 and Side B: S2-2 12 37. The music on it is totally weird because it is a misprint. When you play it you get treated to an hour of lively German polka/folk music instead of Disintegration. In every other respect; cover, sleeve, label, the catalogue number on the runouts, even the track divisions, it is the genuine thing though. Has anyone heard of misprinted copies of Disintegration floating around or do I have a rarity in my collection?
Zololmaran
Yes, there are. Look in all releases of this record, "MP" versions.
Onnell
Bad pressing for me. Lots of noise and spot on it
KiddenDan
It's time for Discogs to define what's a real contribution: someone gets in here, puts a comma or a number and they get credit...IMO credits should go only for the one who creates the entry and for those who upload images.
Arashilkis
Does someone else has a pressing of this remaster with different runouts? My copy has written mpo in the runouts..
Justie
I have it too, MPO indeed, very quiet pressing. I think it was released at the end of August 2016. Not 100% sure.
Fordrellador
If it says "MPO" in the deadwax, and looks and feels like an MPO pressing (three concentric pressing rings in the label area), then I could only assume that would be a different pressing of the remaster altogether. It doesn't appear to be on Discogs, so submit it!
Taun
is there someone here who has IFPI 02B7 on SID code for this release ?
Angana
I do. Also Matrix / Runout on mine is 839 353-2 01 # 1AB
Nikohn
Very disappointing sound quality. Too compressed, very undefined. Quite comparable to the sound quality of the Entreat Plus US release.
Ienekan
That's what you get from a digital remaster...loss of dynamics
Delagamand
anyone else's copy have a load of surface noise? I've cleaned both sides and still quite apparent throughout.
Ese
"Over 1 hour of The Cure...". I bet it does. That’s way over 22 minutes per side limit. Should have been a double or nothing. Terrible.
Bil
Although the pressing plant seems at best amateuristic (I had to return the first copy I bought because one record was missing, do not buy this sealed!), I do not recognise this as just an analogue WAV-file. Sound is fine, and gives me the sensation I had when I was younger. Indeed, there was a lot of noise and even skips on the record, but a run on the good ol' Okki Nokki solved that problem. So it seems the biggest problem is a dirty pressing procedure.
Zeus Wooden
Later US pressings of this should not have the non-fill that plagued the original pressings. You should contact Rhino if you have issues with your pressing.
Washington
Mine looks and sounds nice. It is unfortunate though that it turned to 1s and 0s before pressing on this nice 180g piece of wax. Im frustrated with Rob but.. I will always love you
Xisyaco
When I pulled each of the discs out of their sleeves, there was a white residue or powder across sides B and D. It is easily cleaned using a gentle vinyl brush. Overall the sound is pretty good, nothing revelatory, but I'm glad I got a copy.
Quttaro
Bought the vinyl virtually the day of release sadly it sounded as though the record was already 10 years old crackle and pop all the way through!! The recording mix is also quite rough and flat and doesn't do the songs justice. The previous release (Kiss Me) sounds fantastic and ear splitting loud even though the discs are super thin.On the positive side the cover has a very nice cracked glaze pottery effect only visible in certain light......
Bad Sunny
mietersemichiel I bought 3. All sounded like shit. Finally got the remastered 2LP version. Good to know, thanks! Bought the remastered version as well. It's way better but still far away from being perfect imho.
Ber
I bought 3. All sounded like shit. Finally got the remastered 2LP version.
Kalv
Same for my copy. Bought it recently. Even though it still looks perfect, it sounds crap. Pops and crackles all over, very flat sound, left channel on A-side with lower volume than right channel. Horrible.
Nettale
honestly: such a great album, BUT: such a bad press quality.
Oparae
This version of the album was created to be loud and it sounds quite nice, yeah its been really cleaned up and that makes it lose some of its moodier qualities but it sounds nice and clear at high levels and looks nice, the sound has been separated to give the instruments more space which makes it feel less live I guess that's the effect of the digital, no warps, it did looked like it had been used and was quite dirty and had a few pops on closedown but nothing else major, beats the original from what I can hear, its not perfect but nowhere near as bad as some say if you like this try to find a nice clean copy of this press for cheep.
Utchanat
No, I don't have a copy of this, but I do know that it's pressed by RHINO. So your chances of getting a copy that looks like someone scraped it on a table then played frisbee with it are very high. Tics, pops and static throughout. My copies (yes 4 copies) of Violator are just that. Dr. Rhino sent me 2 bad copies after I sent an email shaming him and Rhino Records for worthless garbage. It took a third one, that was open, but he guaranteed it was dead quiet. It was, but looked really bad. Anyway, Rhino is a gamble on many pressings. I'd love to have Disintegration, but reading to many negatives about non-analog mastering and a very digital sounding recording. I think I'll hold off :(
Vozuru
Didn't find MOV till it was to late. I have Ministry with Sympathy on MOV. It's dead quiet, but I'm not sure it's the original master. It could be a 24/96 digital recording, not positive though. I have to turn the volume up about 20% more than usual. Trying to find Music for the Masses on MOV, but now getting very hard to find.
YSOP
Yeah, that's sounds like RHINO alright. Surface noise, dirt, scratches, pre-groove echoes, off-centered LP's, falsely advirtised weight of LP's, etc. Gotta love em.I think anyone besides Music On Vinyl should be banned from pressing LP's.Speaking of Violator, why would you buy a Rhino release when there's a perfect MOV release available. Also, I have this version of Disintegration, but the European version pressed by GZdm, and no Rhino's are involved in this version. Sounds good to me compared to the original LP pressing & the cd version.
Darksinger
My copy has another variaton on the runout matrix:Matrix/runout side 1 : 839 353-1 S 1 - 3 1224Matrix/runout side 2 : 839 353-1 S 2 - 2 1219
Wooden Purple Romeo
my copy sounds excellent - also no warping at all. I like the original pressing but this has the 2 extra tracks and sounds just as good as the original pressing.
Onath
I don't get it, a potential, one time opportunity from the main man himself, to remaster from an analogue source, the original analogue master tapes and transfer, once and for all, to an analogue medium without any digital lineage. What does Rob go and do? Make a digital master and transfer that to an analogue medium? Why? What's the point? Fair enough, remaster for Digital mediums, after all, it was 2010, but make an analogue version too. There's no point in the vinyl version, you might as well just get the WAV/FLAC or CD. Surely someone ill advised or poorly supervised Rob? Or did Rob, then just into his 50s, misunderstand digital, this new-fangled medium, thinking somehow it was superior to analogue tapes? It probably does sound better than the original press, but just think how good it could have been? I doubt Rob's going to want to sit through all this again. Rob, if you're reading, do all your real fans a favour and remaster to analogue, please.
Dellevar
Add me to the list of people who have tons of non-fill on their copies.
Vuzahn
Anyone else seem to think this version of the LP is recorded way too low thus making it of inferior sound quality?
Xurad
Yes its very quiet due to it's 30 minutes per side. Way too long for vinyl. It should have been originally released as a double record (with the other 2 tracks added) like KM,KM,KM and Wish.
Enditaling
Yes, exactly, but other versions (German for example) are much worse.
Charyoll
My copy sounds brilliant. I've never heard the Cure in such a dynamic way. There are a few pops here and there but overall a fantastic pressing.
Ustamya
I think that's the best album the world has seen in all terms. Absolutely ahead of time and beyond any time, actually. Nostalgic and beautifully sad, like the first warm May rainfalls.
Yggdi
Sounds damn fine to me. Side D was a little noisy, but not too much, and other than that it sounds fantastic. All frequencies coming through very clearly. One of my all time favourite albums, and I am satisfied with my copy.
Nalme
Yep ive certainly heard a lot worse...pressing could be a little quieter.
Dancing Lion
Does anyone else have a copy that has the same labels on sides A and B?
Jia
I'm usually the one having issues being frustrated to no end with pops and surface noise on many of the "new" releases I get, but I have to put my two cents in and contradict what most of the others are saying. The sound of this record is pristine and full bodied and one of my best sounding records on a fairly standard set up. There might just be a few batches of bad copies out there.
Thorgahuginn
i bought this record 3 times and every time same problem, cracks loud pops, surface noise and scratches, all over the record, the sound is terrible either way, the original sounds way better, i cant believe there are people who actually complimented this release, stay away from this unless you want this for the artwork...
Fast Lovebird
Decent reissue. Probably the definitive version of this on vinyl since the original release is missing a couple songs. The sound is really nice, but my copy is on the noisy side. There are some light scuffs and scratches on the records, presumably from the horrible heavy inner sleeves they came in. And for those saying it's "muddy," that's just how the album sounds in general. I don't know if this was recorded digitally or in analog, so this digital vinyl reissue may be the best copy of the album ever released. I'm satisfied.
Voodoozragore
I have to agree. Best I have heard.
Jaiarton

Xtreem
merge away. have a good one
Nekora
To call release R1 523284 "Remastered" is disgraceful! No top end and muddy sounding. Very disappointing release.
Kamuro
I've heard that the original vinyl is even worse.
Silvermaster
Pretty much the Hi - Fi pressing you want of this LP.Lovely album over all, and my fave Cure LP to be sure.
Folsa
I agree mostly with Hailtome, the sound is OK, nothing special but definitely listenable. My copy isn't noisy.
artman
I've got an other Matrix/Runout ...2 12 3 7 - is this another version?
Shakar
I've also got the "1237" run-out on side B. I think it is a variant of this same version.
Puchock
Not quite sure what version matt2011 was reviewing there, but I just came here to say how great this pressing is. Perfectly flat double 180g vinyl, packaged in a gatefold with full color thick inner sleeves. Extremely quiet pressing, dynamic and thick full bass. Sounds fantastic. My copy is the 2010 Rhino press, and Rhino has a great track record putting out very high quality vinyl. If matt received 3 copies, all warped, then the problem isn't the pressing - it may be a very hot mailbox.
Buge
Horrible repress! Seriously, stay away from this at all costs. So disappointing as this includes the full album (including the two tracks originally only on the CD release), but wow, terrible repressing of this. I returned it three times thinking something was wrong with that particular copy, but they were all same: vinyls were warped, quality was bad, cheap packaging. All bad. One of the most mind boggling things about this repress is that it finally got the double vinyl release it deserves, and yet all the sides of the vinyl have a full inch or more of dead wax. Isn't the point of a double wax repress to use up all the sides for audio grooves so they can stretch out and allow the sound to breathe? Avoid this repress at all costs, just a lazy effort!
Jum
it's so hard to keep the sleeve on this release from ripping or tearing at the seams :(. one of the more beautiful picture discs though.
The Sphinx of Driz
One of the most wonderful The Cure albums!
felt boot
Disintegration can also seen as a coming of age, or perhaps the end of an age album, though as I stood there in my mid 30’s, wrapped in my oversized coat and untied sneakers, feeling for all the world like I was yet again in the right place at the right time, I had the distinct feeling that I was perhaps a bit of a spy in the house of love, and that I should be letting a younger generation have their naive hazy hay-day of discovery. Never the less, with perfect makeup and fashion to match, I danced into the wee hours of the morning like some proverbial ghost, haunting the side streets and after hours clubs. With all of this being said, Disintegration is all consuming in its sadness, longing, and emotional grandeur. It’s far from a teenage album filled with whines and despair ... it’s an indulgence into the dark nether regions of our subconsciousness, formulated to challenge the nature of our being as we come face to face with all we though we knew, with discovering the lies we’d held as fact [lies told to us, and lies we told to ourselves], finding that the only way to escaped the melancholy is to find the beauty within it, and once done, this soundtrack, or highway marker of sorts, gets shelved and nearly forgotten, until your hand stumbles over it, and a smile of satisfaction for those bygone days crease your face.Review by Jenell Kesler
unmasked
But, please youngsters, don't believe this is "shoegaze"... It is dark, melancholic, pop music with guitars, sometimes with a smile or a grin. and mr. smith don't have to look at the ground while playing guitar....
Sarin
i have the original lp and this new remaster so i made some tests. I don't hear what everyone is talking about here. The sound is panoramic and powerful. Voices are pretty clear, low frequencies (gallup's guitar bass) really present. "Digital remaster" isn't a pejorative term, look at movies, photographs, musics...what isn't made via computer process ?The most imporant thing is that this remaster was made from the original tapes.
Katius
It is not a problem in theory. Depends on how they use the masters in the process of throwing it through a digital chain. Yeah doesn't have to be pejorative, but it can be synonymous to this in some cases to overkill or bad remastering.
Cerana
You dont have to be an audiophile nazi to dislike record companies ripping off vinyl buyers by using digital files.
Makaitist
I agree, I'm listening to it as I'm writing this. Sound is crisp and satisfying to my ears. Then again I'm not an audiophile nazi, but it should satisfy anybody who wants the complete 'Desintegration' LP.I did notice some significant crackling at the beginning and end of each side (blanks), but not DURING the songs, so no problem here for me. Quiet bits in the songs are perfectly clean. Also I think 2 of the previous comments are from the same dude, and his comments seem really out of proportion (judging from my copy).
Gagas
I played this album today after many years and I am surprised how good this still is.After almost 25 years this has become a classic in the genre (?).The layers of sound , the lyrics and the songs stood the test of time very easy.If you try one Cure album this is the one and you will not be disappointed.
Samugor
Overall OK, not great. Sounds a bit too compressed and digital like posted by other reviewers. Sonic-wise its still OK though. The pressing is pretty noisy, lots of crackling even after washing. I have yet to form an opinion about the czech pressing plant gzvinyl, this is the first LP I bought that was pressed there. But this surely isn't a good start.
Valawye
Amazing album! The production combines clear deep guitar sounds with magical and beautiful synthesizers sounds, the melancholic voice of Robert Smith and the music create an ocean of mesmerizing beauty. On this album The band reaches to the most highest levels of beauty and emotion.
Lanionge
What a bummer to find that IT'S A WORTHLESS ANALOG COPY OF A DIGITAL WAV.Pointless, useless... So we never really get to hear what the complete album actually sounded like, cassette anyone? WEAK LP sounds digital, why would anyone want that. All the overtones are gone and it sounds flat and digital... Why not just re-release as an Mp3 only and get it over with?
BlessСhild
There are tons of 1st pressings available ;) I usually see them sell for around $10 in record stores around these parts .
riki
Worthless, waited years to have a complete copy of 'Disintegration' and Robert RUINS IT, A ANALOG COPY OF A DIGITAL WAV IS WORTHLESS... WORTHLESS, WORTHLESS...
Jorad
The original Promo Vinyl release of this album is the one for collectors and audiophiles. It is the only version of this album that is pressed to vinyl using DMM Direct Metal Mastering.
Adaly
The double LP version that they released on 2010 is by far the best version of this album, i have 3 different pressings of this record
Uthergo
You know for a fact that it was cut directly from the master tapes? A lot of vinyl from that era was digitally sourced....all accounts I’ve heard are that the original vinyl is poor sounding.
Kakashkaliandiia
True, not automatically, but in the case of this pressing it does as it sounds better. Also, from the original master tapes and not a "remaster".
Cobandis
Being mastered using Direct Metal Mastering doesn’t automatically make a release ‘audiophile’. In any case, I can’t see it bettering the reissue due to particularly the length per side.
invasion
Incredible superb this album is a masterpiece from start to finish. Melancholic dark and sadness since the deeper vision made that this album be unique. The emotional lyrics and the sublime voice of Robert Smith join perfectly with the melancholic deep guitars and with the darkness and synth enviromental sounds created by Roger O'Donnell. Certainly, for me, a inprescindible record to understand the philosophy and the depth of the music created by this musicians.
zmejka
There's a 20th anniversery edition now on CD. Somebody should add it.
Gtonydne
I gather that the casual Cure fan is as crazy about Disintegration as any other old Cure album. Everything is here. The grand soundscapes. The melancholic guitar leads. The hurting vocal! Add to this a Robert Smith in a near death mood lyricwise what more can a fan ask for?! My main grip with this album is that it is so archtypical Cure nothing surprises. And devoid of any smash hits this falls directly in my pile of "Well ..." albums. Newcomers looking for the band in a much better shape should start with The Head On The Door. If you like this you may try your luck with Disintegration.
Manesenci
I thought it was only me. Agree that this was poorly recorded compared to previous albums
Alianyau
Okay, my "non-helpful-button" was bit too hard! To start again: in my opinion it's not that bad to start with the Disintegration album into Cure. For example, myself started into Pink Floyd with a quite comparable album - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, quite disliked by some hardcore Pink-fans. Nonetheless, I learned to experience the whole Floyd from this album on. Well, and Disintegraton like A Momentary Lapse Of Reason are two of my favourite albums til today ... and stand next to Meddle, Faith, Pornography and The Wall. Sigh, all those memories ... ;0)!Hope this reply won't be deleted as my last was.
Nern
Ahh "Disintergration". Regarded by many Cure fans as the best of the best (along with "Pornography" and "Three Imaginary Boys"/"Boys Don't Cry") and it certainly holds up till this day. Sentimental and bittersweet, Robert Smith's lyrics and music create a lush album filled with self-reflection, insecurities and nightmares of love and hope. The obvious pop single "Lovesong" is drenched in a haunting melody as is "Lulabye" but with more of a wickedness to it. But this album only has those few "pop" songs. One of the strongest tracks "Fascination Street" has an aggresive tone and perhaps one of the meanest basslines ever played. "Plainsong", "Untitled" and "The Same Deep Water As You" are as haunting as they are calming. There truly isn't one bad note or bad lyric to be found anywhere. A true gem from a truly amazing talent.
