About Album

Maxinquaye - Tricky. Лента с персональными рекомендациями и музыкальными новинками, радио, подборки на любой вкус, удобное управление своей коллекцией. Maxinquaye is the debut album by English rapper and producer Tricky. It was released on 20 February 1995 by 4th & B'way Records. In the years leading up to the album, Tricky had grown frustrated with his limited role in the musical group Massive Attack and wanted to pursue an independent project. Shortly after, he discovered vocalist Martina Topley-Bird who he felt would offer another dimension to his lyrics and signed a solo contract with 4th & B'way Records in 1993. Tricky recorded Maxinquaye. Maxinquaye is the debut album of Tricky, released in 1995. Expanding on the sonic template of fellow Bristolians Massive Attack, and featuring then-girlfriend Martina Topley-Bird on vocals, Maxinquaye is a dark, mysterious album featuring a combination of hip-hop, soul, dub, rock and electronica. The album was later released in America and received great critical acclaim. Tricky - Maxinquaye 1995. To favorites 24 Download album. Listen album. Tricky's debut, Maxinquaye, is an album of stunning sustained vision and imagination, a record that sounds like it has no precedent as it boldly predicts a new future. Of course, neither sentiment is true. Much of the music on Maxinquaye has its roots in the trip-hop pioneered by Massive Attack, which once featured Tricky, and after the success of this record, trip-hop became fashionable, turning into safe, comfortable music to be played at upscale dinner parties thrown by hip twenty and thirtysomethings. Both of these sentiments are true, yet Maxinquaye still manages to retain its power. Discover all of this album's music connections, watch videos, listen to music, discuss and Tricky has remained interesting since his debut, he has never captured the zeitgeist so dazzlingly, nor has as much collective care been taken on his overall concept and execution as is was on Maxinquaye, a true 90s classic. This reissue sounds fantastic all the way through, despite two full packed sides of music. Don't hesitate to buy.
Swift Summer
57 Minutes and sounds pretty good, so it's a kind of a wonder... I have some clicks at the end of B side. That album is so good, I bought it on CD 20 years ago, I bought it on vinyl and would love to give it a try on a double vinyl. That would be the definitive pressing...

5-stars.Tricky has two 5-star albums in my book: this one and Nearly God. It's a shame his later work got a little too self-indulgent with too much guest-vocalitis. Maxinquaye is so lush, it has a pretty-garden feel that other trip-hop doesn't quite have. It all flows nicely, tho' Black Steel is the undoubted highlight. Having Martina sing it ("Nevertheless they cannot understand that I'm a black man, and I could never be a veteran") was a touch of subversive genius, elevating a political anthem to something artistically beautiful.Ratings guide:5-stars: outstanding, never gets old, best of the best.4-stars: very good with plenty highlights, tho' some weaknesses here and there.3-stars: worth checking out but with reservations.2-stars: not recommended. Might have potential, it's just not much good.1-star : everything is skippable, worst of the worst.

I believe that these two albums may appear as the most artistic in comparison to the following albums and in regards to the instrumented music underneath the vocals, but it seems limited as it has a tendency to be a repetitive backdrop to the prominence of the vocals. The vocals are another aspect, I find those of the artist himself the most fitting, with the others sounding good vocally but the caveat for me being that they too consciously attempt to add artfulness. Also, the lyrics, mainly of the guests but not entirely so, have a tendency to be simple and while this is not meant in a condescending way, overall I am not convinced and kind of astounded by these raving reviews.
Amarin
Totally quiet, perfect pressing, but a bit thin-sounding. I would say that on the first side, at least, the 1995 sounds warmer, more bassy, and Martina's voice is more centered. The soundstage is narrower for sure on the 2018, though the 2018 is not a disaster, by any means.
VizoRRR
Sounds amazing! Clean flat pressing. Dynamic with a nice sound stage. It has a full, warm, rich and expansive sound. This one was done right!
Ionzar
Perfect pressing, dead quiet as tobester already mentioned. Same volume level as OG. Also cover and innersleeve very well reproduced. Great reissue.
Pedar
How does this pressing compare to the 2012 MOV reissue? Can anyone compare?
Rgia
Really nice, and much needed, repress of this classic album. This and Pre-Millennium Tension sound better than ever, tbh.
Mr.Death
It is indeed gatefold. Sounds nice and quiet to me.
Wenes
It is, with printed inner too...I think they did a good job!
Irostamore
Is this release gatefold? All the other versions of this have been.
Zyangup
Dead, dead quiet. Fantastic repress. It’s all there, highly recommended.
Ger
This album would be much better if it weren't for Martina's voice. Otherwise, a really solid album.
Washington
I've never heard the OP but this is another gem from MOV! If you were thinking of picking this up I would recommend it.
olgasmile
yes, it comes with colored double sided sleeve. (10 words)
Topmen
dude, does the MOV version has printed inner sleeve ?
Alsanadar
I've got the original British LP , and in no way that record sounds hi fi , due to heavy overproduction I guess. Or maybe that was the intention. It sounds good but not stunning. Would love to compare it with this one.
Steamy Ibis
Amazing album. Martina was 20 when it came out? Love her voice.
Erthai
Music on Vinyl website says its 1000 copies.
Gianni_Giant
Sounds a bit remastered to me. Vocals are brought forward, the dark moods are filtered low. The whole thing is more poppy, dubby, rockin'. But very OK, a nice clear powerful re-edit of this great record.
Barit
hi, does this include printed inner sleeve, or white.black paper sleeve ?
Negal
For months I'd been thinking about buying this reissue. Glad I finally did. A dynamic, engaging, clean pressing.Would have been nice if was split over 2 records though, as 57min on one is really pushing it.
Snake Rocking
now i got a copy, there is no printed inner sleeve on this version...
Wal
It's written that it does..I got the original 1st press and there it is printed.
Capella
hi, does this MOV version includes printed inner sleeve ?
saafari
As with many first albums, this is the one that I believe will never be surpassed. I dont get bored with it , it still moves me as it did 15-16 years ago. Still fresh to my ears. Bought the cd version back then and in the last few years I have been collecting the many 12"s issued from it and it sounds better than ever, even if not all songs are included in them.Absolute classic.
Aurizar
Definitly one of the highlights of the whole "trip-hop" movement. So, laidback Bristol beats + Tricky's trademark voice & a whole LOAD of samples, both cleared & uncleared. A small selection : the most uptempo track "Black Steel" is a cover of Public Enemy, "Pumpkin" uses a little piece of Smashing Pumkins & Tricky exploits the same Isaac Hayes-sample that made Portishead famous. And in "Brand New You’re Retro" he even borrows a groove from no lesser than Micheal Jackson. About the lyrics, they are as much a patchwork as the music is. Tricky carries around a scrap-book so he can write down every cool line that comes to mind & than later on he picks those he'd like to use. That's why nearly every song has several catch-phrases that stick inside your brain for weeks. In my opinion this is great music to make love to, especially the slowburning decadence that makes up "Suffocated Love" or "Overcome". Tricky made a lot of great music after this album aswell but he never quite managed to produce a whole album of this quality...
Tegore
I made a mix with these 3 songs: Ike's Rap II + Glory Box + Hell is Around the Corner): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIgiJvPzQ0k&list=UUUqmqmk3AZhaPGBuIVWT7Nw
Xurad
Rather than a shameless display of laziness, this album seethes with languor, which seems to be its very essence. The juxtaposition of Tricky & Topley-Bird's vocals is a treat throughout the album; the beats are throbbingly sensual, and the lyrics often have a hint of menace to them. Tricky's debut is in my opinion, his best, and probably the best place to start for those new to his music.
Androwyn
Tricky's cockiness and excessive self-consciousness on MAXINQUAYE completely distracts the listener... and the music suffers. His reuse of some of his Massive Attack material and his lazy, tired uninteresting looping of dull programmed beats make this an inessential album.
