On Remember Your Black Day, however, the meticulously upheld image of Vatican Shadow starts to feel more rigorous than the music itself. For a proper debut album, Remember Your Black Day is little more than a smattering of interesting electronic textures separated by spans of great ennui. Each of these eight pieces revolves around permutations of a beat and a web of accompanying sounds-lurid synthesizers, ominous samples, maligned guitars. Vatican Shadow is the name he goes under when making minimal techno, and the deep, relentless beats and murky bass throb of Remember Your Black Day are every bit as menacing and pained as his more formless noise material. While almost entirely instrumental, save some incoherent vocal samples, the eight repetitive and darkly hypnotic tracks here seem to be focused in their titles at least on themes of terrorism and war in the Middle East. Album 2013 8 Songs. Dominick Fernow produced a daunting pile of Vatican Shadow cassettes, singles, and EPs before delivering Remember Your Black Day. And while many of those earlier offerings read like full-length records, he considers the project's latest release its first proper LP. Which makes perfect sense once the songs sink in from the cauterized chords and wordless howls of Enter Paradise to the militaristic death march that drives the title track and Not the Son of Desert Storm, but the Child of Chechnya, the eight-track effort is easily Fernow's most diverse yet. RememberWith Remember Your Black Day, his first full-length as Vatican Shadow, Fernow has begun to explore the true depths of the project. The military aesthetic so prevalent in industrial music is often little more than a nudge-and-a-wink, but Fernow's exploration of these themes feels different. Remember sits proudly apart from Fernow's previous Vatican Shadow work, thanks in part to the newfound clarity of its palette, helped by Silent Servant's production assistance. The smothering reverb and distortion of Kneel Before Religious Icons has all but gone, as Fernow now approaches his music with scalpel-like precision
