After touring their previous album, Fragile, the group assembled at Advision Studios in London to record a follow-up, ideas for which had been put down since February 1972. Close to the Edge is the fifth studio album by the English rock band Yes, released on 13 September 1972 by Atlantic Records. I compared my copy to an early English press and it sounded VERY close. Indeed, the side 2 was a little noisy at the start but I'll still choose it over the highs-heavy 2012 Atlantic reissue.

Of all CTTE editions I have (original LP, early CD issue, remastered CD, bluray and so on) this is without question the best sounding stereo mastering. A tricky record to master I guess with its thick wall of sound, but here you can tell a difference already on the first bass sounds, the bass is clear, you can actually hear the strings and not just the humming. Midrange fine as well as treble. This is as naturally sounding as this recording can be, I imagine.

I cleaned my brand new copy in my fancy machine and played it. It seems a little on the dry side but I don't think it's awful or noisy. I immediately compared it to my SD 7244 (https://www.discogs.com/Yes-Close-To-The-Edge/release/9291906) version and found I preferred it. This version isn't as bad as the comments below lead me to believe. Just another opinion.

"replicated to the finest detail" it's not: no texturing on the cover, no silver elements in the lettering. the sound has more highs (cymbals and sibilants) than the UK original (A3/B3) I happen to have, and more than necessary. the Friday Music edition I'm sorry to have let go was as close to the UK original sound-wise as humanly possible. nevertheless, this an enjoyable reissue.

The print quality of the pictures on the back of the cover is very bad in comparison to original copies. The remaster audio quality is good, maybe a little less natural than the original that I have heard (Japan, uk), but more enhanced in bass frequencies. The organ in "I Get Up I Get Down", however, has a signal distortion too much loud, very harsh on treble frequencies. Someone has encountered the same feeling?

I agree, but the fact is that the original entire LP is less loud. The original has an old type of mastering, so it sounds more natural but, in particular on the organ and synth part, more thin (so the distorted parts are more annoying). The new mastering is more powerful and clean and the high distorted frequencies are compensated by a greater power on the low ones. Mastering is a good job, but a little less natural and wide than the original to my ears. So, I prefer overall the first UK pressing, but for the organ part the new one is more accommodating.

Yes, the organ is distorted. I'm not sure if that is a defect of the pressing or in the original master tapes.

Hi Talivan! yes I agree, is good! For the high frequencies, my sistem is good but the fact is, I think, that the original recording has that type of sound (maybe comes from the wakema's organ recording in the church), now I have also an original 1st UK lp and has the same "aggressiveness" in that moment. ;)

I agree in everything you posted. I gotta said I am very pleased by the sound quality. I think the audio system we both have (dunno, the chances i guess) is not the best to handle the "analogue master tapes" (in other words, higher frequencies will not be processed as it should by the speakers, imho).But the print quality i found it good, not excelent as other, but still good.

My Canadian Version (https://www.discogs.com/Yes-Close-To-The-Edge/release/7473259) appears to use a font at least similar to comic sans. The spine on mine is fairly worn so it's a bit hard to tell, but you can tell it's not Comic Sans, although it is very similar. When I first got it, I genuinely thought it was Comic Sans, but I looked at it again and I don't believe it's actually comic sans.

Super quiet vinyl, nice balance, although you might consider there being a bit too much sibilance on the highs. Soundstage is beautiful. Best copy I have heard of this recording to date.

Unfortunately, as with most Friday Music releases, there are imperfections in the vinyl that are nagging when a nice quiet background is expected. I would have rated this as a 5 for remastering, but the vinyl pressings of Friday Music take away the enjoyment experience. Now I will have to wait or find another 180 gram remaster that will be more enjoyable than this one...

There are a lot of pops and clicks on Friday Music vinyl than any other pressings I've tried so if I see a pressing is from Friday Music I let it go - unless there is great need and I'm willing to live with pops and clicks

As far as I can tell, this release is preferred to all recent LP releases of this album. The Friday release was lackluster, but this mastering by Chris Bellman is fantastic, and I find that I actually listen to it more often than my MFSL copy.

I must admit, I'm not a big fan of Yes. 90125 with Owner of a Lonely Heart is one of the two albums Yes made that I liked. Close to the Edge is the other one. It's like it supposed to be a symphony, but like many they failed to make it a proper one because there are only a few bands that succeeded in making a symphony sound. To me, Queen is a great example in that area. But Close to the Edge (and now I mean the 18:12 minute epic A side) had some elements that I really like. Not hard though. Use an organ like this and I'm sold.

Found this in Sound It Out, Teesside for 7 quid. Cover is in pretty good condition, record needed a clean but plays great. This is my first Yes album and I am definitely a fan, great musicianship.. a real journey. Recommended.

"PACKAGING REPLICATED TO THE FINEST DETAIL" - that's a funny one. Had the LP on my hands (I bought it for my dad) and the sleeve wasn't textured. The original press is. The Japanese mini LP in HDCD from 2001 is not textured, but the SHM from 2008-2009 hopefully is.

I own two separate 70's pressings of CTTE, the original US pressing (SD 7244) and a 1977 reissue (SD 19133). I thought it was interesting that the different pressings come with a different inner sleeve. The original US pressing has the lyrics in black text, while the reissue has the words in white text, both sharing the green background. I figured maybe they changed the color because the black is a bit hard to read with the green, but the white isn't much easier. If anyone has more information about all of this I'd love to learn about it!

It's definitely not "replicated to the finest detail" as says the sticker, it's not the same graphic quality (I own a 1972 LP too so I can compare side by side). I think it sounds good though.

i am not a huge yes fan; i only like their relayer album which is really above all . Here, not enough music, too much lyrics; it's just a soap opera.Totally fine for a broadway musical but not for me.too emphatic, too lyrical

I have the same LP that is featured in the pictures. It says STEMRA on the label too. The label, inner sleeve and outer sleeve all say Made in Germany but I think I bought it in Holland.Not sure if that adds detail or confusion.

Some times in my life I made myself the following question: "If I had to go to live alone in a solitarie island and had to take with me just two albums (CDs preferably), which would they be?" I wouldn't hesitate too much, they would be "Foxtrot" by Genesis and "Close To The Edge" by Yes. In 1972 I was just to cross the line between the teens and the twenties, everything was perfect, I listened progressive rock and read SiFi (the good one) and these two discs, specially "Close To The Edge" simply changed my life. Even now-a-days when I get the chance of listen to it, some passages still make me weep with joy. This is THE perfect album.

Got it on vinyl back in the late seventies and recently on CD. I do not listen to it every week but it is certainly one of my most played albums and the most perfect and complete release from the "golden Yes-period" starting with "Fragile" and ending with "Going for the one". Saw Yes live here in Copenhagen when "Going for the one" was released and they played most of Close to the edge at that occation - awsome !!!
